Bass Slides & Consistent Crashes

Recommended Posts

Alright, since this forum is flooded with supposedly "boring" subjects, I'd like to ask for some help with this little project... I'd like to make a list of all the official songs in which Geddy uses a singular bass slide, and another list of Neil's drum beats that contain crashes (not drum fills, just beats with consecutive crashes). ...And maybe we could do Alex's whammy bar hits as well smile.gif

Here's what I have so far:

Geddy's Singular Bass Slides

Malignant Narcissism (outro)

BU2B (Chorus)

Something For Nothing (pre-chorus)

Cut To the Chase (pre-solo)

YYZ (bass solo)

Limelight (intro)

The Big Money (intro)

Neil's Consecutive Crash Containing Beats

Between the Wheels (pre-chorus)

Tai Shan (pre-chorus & main chorus)

New World Man (2nd verse)

This should be a fun little hunt for some... And if not then I'll just be in this thread alone and complete the lists myself (eventually).. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y296/navyfcbragg/smiley%20mood/lonely.gif

To make this list official, I might have to check all 18 albums for anything we missed, and if it comes down to that, any volunteers want to check debut for me? wink.gif

Caravan - bass slide 2:51

I think there's another or two, one before the first chorus.

I agree. Kudos. This is a great topic.

ah right, BU2B's bass slide is right before the synth comes in, Caravan is the pre-chorus. Thanks smile.gif

Driven, for Geddy.

I can't hear it eh.gif when is it?

Unless it's the Rio version, then I cannot find one either.

I was doing that by memory... and yeah, I was just thinking of the Rio one.

False alarm.

Being a bassist, these are some that quickly popped up in my mind --

Red Barchetta

The Body Electric

Territories

Manhattan Project (if you want to count synth bass slides)

Turn the Page

Neurotica (bass synth slide)

Show Don't Tell (solo)

Stick It out

Cut to the Chase

Alien Shore

Leave that thing alone

Amazingly, the simple bass slide has a LOT of effect on the audience, or seemed to when I played on stage years ago....

Miami sub-bass drops ain't got nothing on live bass guitar... 1022.gif

As far as bass slides go, the only one that came to mind that wasn't mentioned was in Prime Mover at approximately 4:04.

...I will edit if I notice any more.

For the drumming, would you count the constant splash in the verses of Grand Designs? And I'm assuming china "crashes" are allowed since you mentioned Between the Wheels and New World Man. Anyways...

-The "on the edge of sleep" portions of Double Agent.

-The "here we go" breakdown in Test for Echo.

-In the final seconds of The Enemy Within, Neil switches from ride to china.

-The beginning of Armor and Sword.

-The final synth breakdown in Subdivisions.

-The final "it's the power and the glory" segment in The Big Money.

Hopefully I caught on to what you wanted there.

A bass slide is just that: you strike a note high up on the neck somewhere (high = the end closest to the instrument's body) and slide it down the neck, such that the pitch drops, usually rapidly, as you pass each fret. It makes a very distinct and attention-getting sort of sound. Hope that helps...

(a slide can also be done from low to high - but I like them the other way around cool.gif )

Found a bass slide in red tide, right after the synth break after the 2nd (?) chorus.

I've noticed that Geddy slides into the songs on Presto quite a bit. Like on Available Light, just as the pre-chorus kicks in. It's strange how something so small can make such an impact on a song.
