The Owl Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 How long on average are your songs? Well here is a way to find out. If you have your music digitally stored (via programs like iTunes) and have a calculator (a function on every computer) it's easy. Step 1: Find out your total time and total tracks (iTunes dose this for you) 2: Convert Days (if multiple) to hours/ multiply by 24 3: Convert hours to minutes/ multiply by 60 4: Convert seconds to minutes/ Devide seconds by 60 5: Devide the total number by track number 6: Re-convert any decimal # back to seconds/ multiply by 60 Here's mine Total Time--> 12:00:09:36 (12 days, 0 hr, 9 min, 36sec) spans 3532 tracks Convert to hours= 288 hrs, 9 min, 36 sec (12 X 24) Convert to minutes= 17,280 min 36 sec (288 X 60) convert seconds to decimal= 17,280.6 minutes (36/60) Find average track legnth= about 4.89 minutes (17,280.6/3532) Convert back to seconds= (.89 X 60) The average legnth of a track in the Owl's library is 4 minutes, and 53 seconds And that's running the gammit of track legnths from the 48 second "Stop" from Pink Floyds "The Wall" to the 41 minute long (live version) of Dream Theater's "Six Degrees of Inner Turbelance"
TheRocinanteKid Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Not to sound like a moron but I have slight dyscalculia and everytime I try to do this (Yes even with a calcuator) I mess up. Anyone care to do mine? 1032 songs at 3 days, 7 hours, 55 minutes and 59 seconds in total length. Thanks!

The Owl Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 Another rule being is that you can't combine tracks because they are technically 1 song. For example you cannot combine all parts of "Six Degrees of Inner Turbelance" (studio version) to make one big long track, each individual part is it's own track. But using the live version of SDOIT is O.K as 1 track (from "Score") because that is how it appears on the CD...as 1 track. The same would go for the Diffrent Stages version of 2112. That would be 7 individual tracks not one. But the studio version would still count as one, because that is how it is placed on the CD

The reason Mine is so short is because I have alot of songs that are shorter than 1 minute. As I mentioned "stop" from the wall is such an example is only 30 seconds. "Embryo" the into to "Children of the Grave" by Sabbath in only 28 seconds long. "Stupid Dream" is only 29 seconds long. And I have the "20th Century Fox Fanfare" (22 seconds apiece) 3 times, 1 for each of the Star Wars Soundtracks. It's this kinda stuff that pulls an average down. In total I have 52 songs that are less than 1 minute.
