Timo
Well I like lots of things, and some if it is even new music! Bjork, Handsome Family, Sigur Ros and many many more. Anyway this isn't a competition to see who has the most eclectic taste, I think that to criticise 'all these bands today' for making music the way people want it to be just to be successful is a little unfair, as partly, that's what a lot of pop music has always been about, sometimes it ends up producing music that's actually ok, sometimes it doesn't. And, looking back to that 'classic rock' era, there was always a lot of rubbish around that was very commercial, it's just from 2005 either it doesn't all look so comercial, or the real rubbish stuff has disappeared from memory, giving the appearance that everything was great. I like Jethro Tull, but they did some terrrible things in the '80s. Rush are pretty much unique, you look at other 'classic rock' bands like Aerosmith or Uriah Heap or Black Sabbath, your talking about a different genre, they have little in common with Rush, generally their music was much more 2D, much thinner, often more commercial, and then look the other way at Prog rock, Yes did some hideously commercial things in the 80s. Some music that's commercial is still ok (Aqua, Daphne & Celeste, Adam & The Ants, Status Quo, Fleetwood Mac) even though there has been a deliberate attempt to be commercial. So I think to say that something's commercial isn't enough to condemn it. When it comes down to it, it's music. What one person likes, another doesn't. I could've just saved my fingers and written that. I don't think we should get too bogged down in criticising everything else, we're the lucky ones who enjoy rush, music is to make people happy, if Justin Timberlake makes people happy, fine, good for him. If Radiohead makes people happy, I'd be really surprised.

If Radiohead makes people happy, I'd be really surprised. and may I add also....welcome to the board!!! I most certainly don't look at mainstream music as much today as I did before because i'm always looking at local bands and such. Switchfoot is a "mainstream" band...BUT my friend has had that CD playing in her car for sooo long and other than that one song that the radio overplays I like the rest of the album. As geddy says in an interview about cutting themselves off of life and people so their image goes away and such because they didn't like the limelight... Right now i'm cutting myself off from the modern music area...aka mainstream which could be a good thing and a bad thing. If I have never listened to switch foot...maybe that could of changed the way I play (drums) or something...you never know. I say listen to all kinds of music. period. But listen to what you like....don't be forced to like something you don't!
bytorcygnus
I'm sure my musical tastes are not all that unusual or eclectic. As I heard someone on these boards say once...It's not a competition to see how eclectic or cool your taste is, anyway. That being said, here goes just a sampling of my tastes. 1. (duh) Have listened to for years, seen live and respected their performances... (in no order , of course) Pink Floyd Yes AC/DC Queensryche (probably listen to the most , next to RUSH) Megadeath Corrosion Of Conformity Ozzy/Black Sabbath Journey Styx B.O.C. Got into in last 5-10 years, some seen live, some not TOOL (awesome) Staind Godsmack Foo Fighters Green Day Filter Terrence Trent Darby Others come and go, daily of course.almost! I enjoy alot of the new stuff put out by many bands of a different name..Alot of it sounds good, but the sheer rotation of new bands, names etc. - what's up with that? It seems like anybody can get together and record an album these days.........thanks MTV..or NOT!? Maybe I'm confused? I dunno...you tell me........
