Liking Old Rush and a fans age...

Barnacle

Recommended Posts

Often times I have thought to myself that Rush fans disliking the new is a result of just plain getting older....for example when you are young things sound much more fresh and new and in some cases exciting...as you grow older...and listen to much more music ( not just Rush) all sorts of changes occur with your own opinion of music...

Good example...when I was 10 I thought KISS was great...yeah their music....as I got older I realize how completely awful that music is/was....and it is pure nostalgia if I ever listen to that stuff again.....the next band I became a fan of was Rush...and to a certain degree Led Zeppelin...but since then I have gotten into many many many more styles ( most not rock) and in some ways I see alot of Rock as really juvenille music...so I appreciate now when good Rock is out there....I can even understand some of the critics compaints with old Rush music...some of it ( while still a favorite of my past) does have annoying vocals...screaming...and some frankly weird ( but cool) time changes etc...and excessive playing. Not to say I do not like the old anymore...but tastes change.....now I look at Rush as like an old frined...and I appreciate what they do...in some cases I see where they are going with something...and understand how they are continuing to be relevant in an everchanging world.....

Any how this is where I become frustrated hearing people say Rush should go to their past and make Moving Pictures 2 or 2113 etc....it just makes no sense to anyone other than possibly a listener who simply has not moved on an experienced enough other music to see that artists change.

I am not certain what your point is but I can say that I'll be 40 in a month and I rock harder and faster than at any other point in my life previously. Then again, 40 is not old.

Funny, I was thinking just the other day about the link between a Rush fan's age and the era they most identify with. At 37 I harken back to those overprocessed days of HYF, PW and GuP. But that doesn't mean that I can't get with the new stuff. Rush is special for me. While I want to keep bands like U2 locked into 1989, I'm happy with the direction that Rush has gone.

I'm with DRock, my music seems to get harder with every passing year. Blame it on cable t.v. video games and net-porn I guess.

I too cut my gums on Rush's mid 80's sound (PW is still my fav.) I love the way Rush reinvents themselves. But I still rock to Entre Nous, Lakeside Park, The Trees, and Fly By Night (along with many, many more). They are of the VERY few acts I can enjoy listening to. My 17 year old mocks me...but I did catch him head bobbing to the opening of "Far Cry". He just might have to come the show with me-Hell, I listen to his Linkin Park!...I'll convert him yet.

I guess my point is just that....it is not about "rocking harder" for me....I have found many many styles of music that offer more sophisticated ways of impressing rather than just "rocking harder"...for me Rush hit their own "rock harder" jump the shark with VT....I was so glad to see Rush stop the loudness /insanity competition with S&A...it is just soooo dumb.

I listen to everything from classical...to jazz( which includes so much in that one word:JAZZ)..to indian tabla..Mid Eastern Dumbek playing...to African hand drumming and everything in between and realize that sometimes the old stuff I listened to sounds...well kind of young by comparison....this is why bands like Queensryche and Metallica and Dream Theatre do nothing for me....while more out there stuff like Out Trio ( Bozzios band) ...Allan Holdsworth...still sounds fresh and exciting

my point is while some old Rush stuff may have been mind blowing when I was 14 it no longer seems that way anymore....ears and listening habits mature over time....and it it's own way new Rush is every bit as cool now...as the old stuff was then. Take YYZ for example...it is basically a couple of 4/4 grooves with some cool fills....but back then I thought wow this is amazing....I guess over time and with experience it puts all this listening into perspective for me.

I turn 41 in two months...and have been playing drums since I was 11 years old...I also studied music so I probably break things down alot more too......

What I have Noticed is alot of my

40ish year old friends ( I'm 46 )

Have abandoned Enthusiazum for Music in General

They either watch sports ( sux ) or Sit Coms ( sux) or now Reality TV ( really Sux )

They almost never listen just to Music

They think I'm too Old to attend concerts & Crazy to actually see groups over & over.

All I can do Is Think what they are missing out on !

I'm 14 and I really am not sure which era is my favorite. Sometimes it's the AFTK-MP era, sometimes the 80's, sometimes the modern stuff (CP-VT). Snakes and Arrows has been my favorite album for a while now, and I'm not sure if that'll change or not.

Last night, my mom and I had a discussion about how my tastes have changed through the years. I was a "teenybopper" until about age 12, then I started liking alt. rock and even emo (062802puke_prv.gif I can't believe I did). It wasn't until about 1 and a half years ago when I started to get into prog. Now I listen to Tool, Weather Report, Rush, Weezer, Arcade Fire and other artists.

She then called me narrow-minded for not liking Evanescence and Pussycat Dolls. unsure.gif

Like D-Rock, I'm 40 (whoop-de-doo-da) and find that my musical interests at this age are more harder-rocking than even my teenage years. And like Barnacle, grew up on a steady diet of Zeppelin, Kiss and the Van Halen 80's. It wasnt until high school that I got into Yes, and then Rush, and U2.

Rush is the only band that has maintained the same level of interest for me, musically, as time has gone by. Part of that I attribute to my own maturity and changing interests since high school, but theres a part of me that will always have a place for that particular bit of the 'soundtrack of my life'. Its impossible to not think about those bands when I think about my youth.

Barnacle's point about Kiss hit home with me. It was rebellion music for me, personally. It was so cool at the time. Hey, back then I didnt even know that Elton John was gay, lol - he was just very theatrical and had funny glasses. z7shysterical.gif But time passes, you mature, your tastes change, your interests change. But for me, Rush has stayed. And theyve stayed relevant, fresh and interesting.

I'm 45 and I rock harder than I've ever rocked before. They do say 45 is the new 35, so i'll go with that.

...and I still love my old Kiss and Judas Priest albums! biggrin.gif

I got your point Barny....I just had to read your post a few times....you make a good point.

To rock out is a good way for people to relieve stress (which I rarely have).......at least according to me.

My hypothesis is that the 35-49 year old set would probably have less hyper-tension, less high cholesterol, less high blood pressure and less diabetes if they ate right, exercised more and ROCKED OUT often......

I like your post here, because makes you sound like a 'real world' fan.

After reading the threads on this board I have gotten the impression that everyone is nuts about 2.gif 24/7. I am not. I am too old to be that obsessed.

I was a hardcore fan from COS to MP. I loved Rush. I did not stop listening to them at Signals because of the keyboards, I just moved on. I did not know anything about the keyboards , and I was 19 or 20 then. It wasnt untill VP that i took interest in an 'old friend' again, and it has been really fun catching up on all the material from the 80's and 90's, eventhough my wife thinks i am nuts.

Anyway, I am not ready to argue like I did at age 17 in 1979 of whether Alex was as good as Jimmy P , or Eddie V on the guitar, or whether Geddy was a monster on the bass like Chris S. I am just happy that something I loved when I was a teenager, is still going on.

I like the way you say 'Old friend' , because that is what this is about for me, and I will be happy to see them this time around on tour.

The tours i have seen? Hem, PeW, VP,and soon S&A.

I (age 20, 21 in three weeks) actually prefer the most hated late-80s early 90s (Presto, CP, RTB, T4E) era. I think that's some of Rush's best work.

Let me get this straight---You're 20 years old......And you want Mitt Romney as your next President? Not to mention your first President as a voter. I know this is not the political page but he does use it as a signature. Sorry I just couldn't help myself.

Hey I agree...anything to relieve hypertension high blood pressure etc is great man! That is why biking and drumming help me so much and keep me thin!

That's good to hear Barny, for some reason I had this mental picture of you being grossly obese.

Rock on and stay thin!

He openly admits to preferring Presto & RTB...you shouldn't be suprised at anything after that.

as a unofficial member of the KISS army, I find them more nausiating with how much they whore themselves 30 years too late. I like a majority of their music, just not the ones they play to death like its their big single (I won't mention any titles, but its not "Strutter")

I'm 38, and I started listening to Rush when I was about 10. There was a point in my early teens when I longed for the vintage Rush, but as my taste in music evolved past classic rock (Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, The Who), so did my taste in Rush. As I got older, I started to appreciate all of Rush's work (mainly GUP). I also broadened my musical horizons too. I don't do Jazz or classical, and country makes me sick. But I started listening to stuff off the beaten path. Instead of Pink Floyd, I was getting into the Afghan Whigs, Social Distortion, Catherine Wheel, Ministry, Bob Mould/Sugar, and PJ Harvey. But the one thing that remained constant was my love for Rush. And it doesn't matter what period either. I can find tracks that I love on every album. I feel sorry for anyone who is stuck at Moving Pictures. There is incredible work on every album from Rush. You can't say that about many bands. I guess that is why they have been my favorite band for the last 25+ years.

my favourite Rush stuff has always been their earlier stuff. Carress of Steel, 2112, A Farewell to Kings... probably because those were three of the first albums i bought. i think the main problem i had with 80's Rush at first was just how different it sounded. when i bought Signals the last Rush album i had heard was Hemispheres. it didn't sound anything like Rush to me, same with othert 80's songs i heard. but now that i've heard it more i've heard it more i've grown to like it. GUP has become one of my favourite albums. Rush has changed so much over the years, i just think it's hard for some fanes to get used to the new stuff. their not like AC/DC where every album sounds the same. and i think this is a good thing, i think i would get bored of Rush if every album was comprised of 20 minute songs with Sci/Fi lyrics. change is good. but for the record, 2112 is still the greatest album ever made wink.gif
