Lorraine
The truth is that most schools do not teach grammar/phonics anymore. The tried and true methods from yesteryear apparently worked the best. We now have generations that can't spell, read, or talk. Or do simple arithmetic without a calculator. In short, they were never taught to use their brains.
OldRUSHfan
One I've hated for a few years now, "Ahh-ite" [all right] usually spoken (at first) as far as I've found out, my inner city youth, of all races involved, and it just drives me NUTS now that I've started hearing supposedly Adult people saying it. How freakin' lazy are human's getting? HUH?http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/OldRUSHfan/Banana%20World/banana%20gun%20tny.jpg

I wouldn't say it at the office unless my office was a yacht packed with bitches and hoes while shooting a rap video.
EagleMoon
One of the biggest grammatical annoyances I have is when people use the wrong tense in a sentence. For example, "was" instead of "were" and "go" for "went".
Lucas
I know much of this banter is in good fun, and there's no denying that there are some who don't have the best grasp on the language .. If it really means something - and it sure seems like it for some here, considering the emotion - instead of racking up 30,000, 40,000 + posts on the internet, be the example you think you are: http://www.bbbs.org/
Tick
Someone explain to me how pointing out Black people say stupid shit love me "ax" instead of "ask" Is racism?Let me tell you, it's NOT.So say whatever ever you want and call me stupid but saying I'm stupid for pointing something that's just the truth is stupid. It's not racist, not even a little bit. If anyone says it is you need to tell me why and have it actually make sense?
metallithrax
So, like, one that gets me is the wrong use of the word "of" init. Would of, should of etc. not just in written form either, people speak it as well. And then there is the use of then instead of than.
Tick
My last post needs to be edited (it won't let me) because who knows why the f**k that came out as it did but I think the point was made. Don't play the racist card just because truth is presented about a certain race. What I said was true. When a African American woman professional comes into my home regarding a internal family situation involving my daughter (years ago) and keeps saying "ax" I feel like losing it. It's not a substitute for the word ask no matter how many bullshit reasons anyone has to justify it. It just painted the woman as fool in my eyes. Period.
Lorraine
The past about seven years I've started to get confused regarding grammar. I don't know why that started, but it did, and it drives me crazy. Grammar or the correct use of a word (i.e. past/passed, affect/effect). Never had this problem before in my life until recently. Be that as it may, the other thing that I find yet another step down is the use of abbreviated words due to (I'm assuming) texting. We're bad enough without becoming worse. JohnnyBlaze
Do you guys want to kill some southerners when they say "y'all"? I don't. I'm asking because other words already mentioned seem to piss you guys off pretty easily. However, once on a road trip through rural parts of southern Georgia my friends and I stopped at small family owned restaurant outside of Thomasville. After a delicious lunch of fried chicken, mashed potatoes smothered in gravy, steamed carrots, greens, corn bread, and a heavenly serving of sweet potato pie, the waitress gently asked, "Anything else I can git y'all?" I immediately grabbed the nearest chair and began pummeling her with it. Nobody uses imperfect English around me! :P Obviously, j/k. She was the sweetest waitress in the world. To the waitress' question I simply answered, "No, we're fine. Thanks." I wish I could be back in Thomasville, Georgia right now for that fried chicken platter, sweet potato pie, hospitality, and imperfect English. Truth.

vaportrailer
I'd rather people learned how to be nice, considerate, polite... English is a dog's breakfast of a language. The tough coughs as he ploughs the dough. I'd rather hear someone say "ax" by mistake, instead of hearing someone going on about "paradigm shifts" or "deliverology".
MMCXII
If you've read through all of this thread's posts, you can read this article below. If you haven't read through all of this thread's posts, you can read this article. Don't dismiss it until you've read it all. (I didn't bother with the videos though) http://www.npr.org/s...y-some-still-doI read it all. Complete BS.Show me a dictionary definition of the word "ax" that one of the definitions is "to ask a question"?When someone can do that I'll lay off the bullshit justification of using poor English and accept it.Good luck with that. That's fine. I just put it out there to be read. I also knew this reply would happen quickly. Mainly though I think you're letting this bother you too much. I guess there's this argument though...You're half a dozen or so years older than me Tick so you'll remember "ain't" NOT being in the dictionary. I even remember in elementary school some teachers telling us that "ain't" wasn't in the dictionary (so we shouldn't use it). And it wasn't in there. But then some time in the late 80s or maybe early 90s, it was! So the dictionary defense AIN'T actually sufficient. Words are here before they're entered into a dictionary. Of course they would be. I went and looked up 'ax' in this context. I'm happy to report that it still ain't a word :D Edited June 12, 2017 by MMCXII

Lorraine
I'd rather people learned how to be nice, considerate, polite... The prospects for this are bleak at best.
