Maverick
Wow, this was actually really tough for me despite not being a big Yes fan. I went through a huge Yes phase when I was young but have rarely returned to them since, being content to catch the occasional tune on the radio, with the exception of Drama. I've always loved this album. Guess I'm weird though as my second favorite of theirs is Relayer. Then I get conventional with Close to the Edge at #3. Anyway, I had to think hard about this as I'm not in love with Freewill or Natural Science, like about everyone else is, but love the rest of PeW, esp Jacob's Ladder. Re Drama, I don't love Into the Lens, but really like the rest, and really really love Run Through the Light. Always have. So it's a close call. But...have to give it to PeW because no matter how indifferent I am to Freewill and Natural Science (apart from the live version on Different Stages), PeW is too amazing. Drama is amazing but it sounds like an amazing album from 1980; PeW is an amazing album that just doesn't age; it still sounds fresh, it's the once and future classic. Speaking of Relayer, I used to listen to side 1 mainly to hear this thirty some seconds of bliss, starting at 13:42... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpaouEAfkwg I love that whole Victory March section of Gates, from the very beginning with the keyboards, through Howe's take over on his pedal steel guitar up to the fade to Soon. One of the most powerful and melodic moments in Rock history.
Lucas
Great discussion Based on the Hemispheres vs Going For The One thread, I thought this would be closer, but I do understand the landslide here Drama has been a favorite of mine - I like it better than Going For The One

Lucas
Not much of a battle or even a slight skirmish. Harsh words? lol no, it's the just reality .. Hemispheres vs Going For The One was ( is ) 31 to 11 in favor of Hemispheres .. I thought this one would be closer, as Drama, for me, is a better, more complete album than Going For The One Entre Nous is the deal breaker for me - it's a total dud

RUSHHEAD666
Waves, it is one of rush best albums to this day By far! I remember reading an article decades ago saying that Neil was in a funk after "Hemispheres." The boys were totally exhausted and out of fresh ideas. Yet they penned "Permanent Waves." Lucas
This is interesting, as I did not realize how close ( time wise ) the band was to recording in 1980 with Anderson and Wakeman ... Rick Wakeman: Jon and I got really quite depressed and started crying on each other's shoulders and Jon said 'This is not the band that love, this is not the band that I wanted to keep on going', [and I replied] 'I'm with you Jon'". The sessions were ultimately called off after White cracked a bone in his right ankle while roller skating early in the morning with Richard Branson in a nightclub, rendering him unable to perform for about six weeks. Following a break over Christmas, the band reconvened in London for rehearsals in an attempt to salvage the situation. That failed, causing Anderson and Wakeman to depart in March 1980. The recording of Drama began a month later Jeff Downes and Trevor Horn were invited to rehersals, unaware that Anderson and Wakeman were no longer in the band: The meetings, which Downes characterised as "a bit directionless, because they were rehearsing as a three piece [...] you can only go so far as a rhythm section". Together, the five of them developed the Buggles song, which became "We Can Fly from Here". Meanwhile, the Buggles weren't informed of Anderson's departure, and were confused by his absence; Squire didn't answer them and they only found out about the situation by the point that they were being pushed to record the song. Feeling Horn and Downes were suitable replacements, Squire convinced Howe and White to let them join In reading this, I think that had Anderson and Wakeman had remained in the band to record an album in 1980, it would never have come close to what Drama is .. And I love both of those guys Regardless of the Drama vs Permanent Waves question, the fact that Drama came out the way it did is a great story Edited October 18, 2016 by Lucas
Lucas
So the greatest ever prog band loses their one-of-a-kind singer and all-world keyboardist They pluck two unsuspecting kids out of the Video Killed The Radio Star band, and a month later start to record what is a classic - an album that I consider an all-time favorite, 10/10 And some of you don't think Geddy and Alex can find a different drummer ?? c'mon

There is an early version of Does It Really Happen on there.
