    A Show of Hands

I give a lot of credit to the band for Tai Shan .. Whether or not is missed the mark is up to the listener, but the fact that they did something unexpected and very different than what they were known for - I like that, and can appreciate the song even more ... A while back I started a thread about missteps, failures and risks in an artist's career - it could be any artist - but I think that there is sincerity in a lot of what could be considered failures -- when an artist goes out on the proverbial limb and does something unexpected or out of their comfort zone, it can be taken as them wanting to show a side of themselves and their own take on whatever they are writing about -- it's not safe, it's not what everyone else is doing, but it is a risk ... I like that - whether or not it is commercially successful or successful according to the fanbase or critics, that really doesn;t matter to me .. I can see how Geddy and Alex don;t like Tai Shan, but they should at least be proud of the fact that they did it and took that risk ..
  2. .. I actually just tried 200% to get a better look at the first pic in you sig !!
  3. When I was in the 7th grade, we went on a field trip on the school grounds to see how maple syrup was extracted from trees ... It was not my thing at the time, so I drifted away and climbed a tree .. The teacher was understandably upset when he saw where I was - which wasn;t that high - but when he started yelling, I thought it would be fun to hang from the branch upside-down - the branch behind my knees and arms dangling down .. I remember the crack and the fall - and I remember being confused as to why the teacher was so pissed at me - but I landed head first and was taken to the nurse's office .. She gave me an eye test and determined that my left eye was a bit weaker .. My right eye was perfectly fine ... That same year, I was hit in the face with a baseball at my Little League All-Star debut .. That required a hospital visit I can;t be sure if the cause of the vision in my left eye was due to the fall .. To make a short story long, wheat is pretty amazing is that my vision has stayed the same since .. I have the exact same prescription now than I did 40 years ago ... I have my computer set to 100% .. Congrats on the new laptop Duck, and I see that in honor of the occasion, you've changed you signature pics !! I'll do the same by tonight !!!!!
  4. A lot has come and gone in the time since Jimi died, but he is still as exciting and fiery as he was 50 years ago
  5. I love that Kylie Minogue album! Have you heard her 1995 self-titled and follow up Impossible Princess? I have a major soft spot for her... Oh gosh...I forgot about Black Market Music! One of my favourite Placebo album! The only Kylie I albums I have are Light Years and Fever ... This thread has got me thinking that I need to go and get her other stuff too ok, I just looked at her discography, and there are a bunch of albums I didn;t even know about !!! .... And Black Market Music is right up there with my favorite from Placebo ... with Placebo, it's tough to pick a favorite because they have been so consistently good - but BMM is right there
  6. 7. Cool! Any major differences between the blu-ray and the old-school dvd? Gonna watch the 30th Anniversary Edition this evening. Love this damn movie! I f*cking love the scene on the Orca at night, where Hooper, Brody, and Quint are drinking and comparing scars, and all of a sudden Robert Shaw is talking to your soul. INTENSE! http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-96H-8P0OUIU/T7R9FDfol3I/AAAAAAAAAAs/s_p7VBupARQ/s1600/quint.jpg "Ya know, the thing about a shark, he's got...lifeless eyes, black eyes -- like a doll's eyes..." VT, the blu ray is stunning ... night scenes are amazing - I cannot imagine it looking better .. The scene that introduces Quint -- the gathering in the municipal meeting room -- maybe it's just that I'm older now and can appreciate these things, but the turquoise mouldings and door in that room just jump out .. there's an upstairs room in one of my barns that I still need to finish renovating, but it going to be the Amityville Board Meeting Room !!!! The blu ray was on $7 and change on amazon ... I would definitely go for it as it is a noticeable improvement over the DVD http://www.dvdbeaver...mpare6/jaws.htm Can you tell what kind of crackers Quint is eating all the time? They sound delicious! Thanks for the link. I'll pick up the blu-ray next Amazon order. Was there much frigging around with special effects etc? I knew they "improved" the shark effects, but the 30th Anniversary edition had parts that seemed to have been "tightened up" editing-wise. (for the attention-spans of today? ) One of the first times I saw this on tv (late 70s/early 80s), they showed the scene with Quint in the music store with the little clarinet player. There must've been a tv edit version at one time. Jezus, how many different edits/versions of the original Jaws have there been? https://www.imdb.com...ternateversions The clarinet scene was not in the feature, but it's there in the deleted scenes bonus .. I believe that's the same as the 30th anniversary edition .. It's been some time since I have seen the movie in it's entirety, but to my eye, there was no reediting or anything going on .. I know that there can be a tendency to feel let down after someone raves about how good something is, but I cannot overstate how good a job they did on the blu ray -- and I bought the bargain basement 1 disc blu ray .. The image is spectacular, one of the most pleasant surprises I have had when going from VHS to DVD to blu ray ..
  8. Great to see your posts Saint Nick .. hope everything is going good Any new songs in the making ??
  9. no shame in that My Mom had the best taste in movies !!!
  10. In the early days, a lot of country artists had a wonderfully anti-authoritarian stance -- and it's very sad that somewhere along the way, in order to be promoted or accepted in a mainstream way, politics and a pro military stance has swallowed up this genre .. The hypocrisy is sickening, to be honest

  14. Yesterday's Silent Scream and the Kilroy / Elder poll have me back circa 1980-1983 I had a friend in school - Ralph - and he had a moped .. so he got a job at the video store picking up and delivering VHS tapes to people's houses ... That was an era in which we watched movies what seemed like every night .. One I never had got to see I saw tonight .. 1981's Graduation Day Schlock, standard early 80's slasher film, and I loved every minute ... For the next few weeks, I'll be trying to get in a 80s slasher every weekend It's interesting too because there is the wave of renewed interest in this era - Stranger Things, Witching Season, Ready Player One - but no matter how accurate, they can't get that feathered hair down like the real thing

  16. Anybody else see any of the eps of The Witching Season ?? I guess I'm a little late to the party, but this is an anthology of horror shorts - each 12-15 minutes long, and all are set around the Halloween holiday Nothing groundbreaking, but the vibe is really good .. I'm still in the dark as to how many have been made so far, but here's hoping they keep 'em coming
  17. The Elder has aged better for me, probably because I had such a love/hate thing for it when it first came out .. Plus, the blow of The Elder was softened a bit when Kiss followed it up with Creatures Of The Night .. There is also a mystique around that album because of the grandiose tour plans that fell apart before any of it got off the ground -- the only live performance being that three song set on the TV show Fridays in 1982 ... I really don;t remember a lot about Kilroy, and I should go back and listen to it in its entirety .. I'll say this : the concept thing was popular at the time, and looking back, I really have grown to like that era .. and speaking of time, ELO's Time is a favorite of mine .... Not sure if Alan Parson's Eye In The Sky is considered a concept alum, but that's another from that wonderful moment in history .. Heck, I even love Neil Young's "Trans" anyways, as predictable as it is, Music From The Elder win this one for me
  18. Double Feature Friday 1980s Silent Scream Somewhat dreadful thru the first hour, but turns suddenly when Barbara Steele finally arrives .. very odd turn this one takes, and makes it worth watching And old friend ... first saw this in the theater and no matter when or where I see it now, it still feels brand new The blu ray transfer is incredible
  19. more power to the old c*** and his air drumming, but I find this thread much more entertaining and enjoyable
