The Paul Simon Thread—What's your favorite?
By Tor replied to Tombstone Mountain's topic in Music Of The Spheres
A tough question . But I going to go with I Am A Rock. -
I would say Tea For One . A great Zepp song that never gets the respect it should .

Yeh , Goose Panacaea . Again one of the finest Rush songs that gets left behind . So then I will take away Madrigal and put The Fountain Of Lambeth . And that is one hell of a Top Ten . Cheers for the Nod Narps ! :D
-
Lone Justice !!!! Nice one . Maria McKee is the girl involved . Have all her albums and Ive seen her many times over the years

It's hard for me to believe that the most skippable track in their 70's catalog would make anyone's top ten list. Clock's in at a mere 2:35. No Alex. No Neil. Well I love it Goose . Yeh I could have gone Closer To Heart , etc etc , etc, but I think this song is always left out when it comes to lists . But I do really think a short and sweet and I love it , very atmospheric Are you saying it`s not a worthy Rush because their is only Geddy on it ? Same goes with Cinerella Man . Love that too :D

My Top Ten 70`s Rush songs 10 . Anthem . Why ? Just turn it up . 9. Here Again . Brilliant and underated . 8. Something For Nothing . A perfect song in every way . 7. The Necromancer I love this song more and more than ever 6;Cygnus X I Book II - Hemispheres No need to say anything , do I ? 5. Madrigal . When the dragons grow to mighty ... Hard to pick a song off my ultimate Fav Rush album and I could have gone with all the tracks . But this is again a perfect song . 4. Xanadu . Well maybe 2 songs 3. In The End . Always gives me the same feel as Something For Nothing . 2. La Villa Strangiato Perfect again . Rush at their peak 1. 2112 , Well it`s 2112 , and thank god it did enough to keep Rush recording albums after the brilliant underated Caress Of Steel was almost the death of the band . Just think going into a Tractor part shop and seeing Mr Peart behind the desk with his head in a book . Hard to pick 10 as for me rush`s finest decade .

Thanks Lorraine . :) Thats was a short reply , I could of gone on and on . A tough question to throw in the mix . What is your favourite Track ?

Quadrophenia . Why is it the best Rock Album ever . Note I say Rock album , that kinda narrows it down a bit . But it is a Concept album . And on top of all that is there a track you skip now you have the technology to miss a track with a press of a button . No If you were very lucky to here this album when you had left the tortuous last days of School behind and you were dropped into a world were a job and a Working class background had you fighting for a steady job and a crowd to fit in and coming from a poor family background with a poor education you had to look for something to inspire you . Quadrophenia . There were albums around , but they just told you to go out and Rock and Roll , find Love , Drugs , and party at weekends . Quadrophenia was something more . I guess the album is like a painting , it has different aspects to different people , but this album connects to you when you are a Teenager . The Album . A Gatesleeved album , with a cover of a Mod on his Scooter , inside a black and white montarge of the story of the the Mod and as you read the lyrics you get drawn into the whole concept and Townshend takes you into a world that could well be anyone of that age and he is telling you that he is living what we all crave for . To fit in . The Music . The album is four musicians at there top of there game . Townsend set out to make this an album with four parts so we could get each musician with their creative know how to amke sure that they didn`t just go through the motions of making a band album . Daltrey The finest singing of any Rock singer on any album , when you listen to it you almost believe Daltrey is living the part . Entwistle . At the time he is one of the best Bass players around and he brings that perfect quarter to the album Moon . Once again , his finest moment with The Who and at the end of the album , the drum being smashed to pieces you can almost hear the cymbles rolling across the floor . Then you have Bell Boy . Again like Daltrey you believe he is the lad dragging the bleedin baggage out . Townshend . His genius songwriting and arragements on this album are just too perfect . Guitar playing is his best for me on this album . It`s hard to put in words how this album affects you when you listen to it , all I know I will never hear anything better . The best album ever made .

What, in your opinion, makes it the best? Oh ! good question . And I need a good hour , to answer it , so tomorrow , it will have my full attention . :D
-
I love Rock , a lot , and I have listened to many Rock albums as I can since those good old days in the 70`s and beyond . So I thnk I may know a bit or a lot about Rock albums . So when the question comes up "What`s the best Rock Album ever made ?" Quadrophenia . simple . I`m ready for the debate .

You and I have a lot of the same choices. I almost put the Simon and Garfunkel album in my list but at the last minute decided not to. Looks like The Beatles were huge influence on a lot of us. I did notice that when I read your post . Two great minds .

There a Three important albums that changed my life which when you put it down on in writing does`nt really tell the whole story but these first three were that important . The Beatles . Sgt. Pepper . I guess me and millions of others have been turned on by this album , it truly was a Alice in wonderland moment . Rush . A Farewell To Kings . I saw the band and then bought the album , I had heard a few Rock albums before this , but none had the same impact that I know every note and every lyric to this day . It was a life changer , I grew my hair and became a Concert , Festival Rock disco loving head banger for the next 7 years . and from that year in 78 to this day , I still go to concerts and love every minute . Close To The Edge . Bought it on my 16 th Birthday , I like to think it got me ready for the next few years of Rock and Prog albums that would soon become an obsession . 1 album can do that , that how good it is . These 3 set up my Rock listening lifestyle . The next 9 . also had a tremendous effect on me Mike Oldfield . Tubular Bells Nothing is more amazing than hearing this the very first time . The Beatles . The Beatles . The White album , what is`nt on this album . Rock , Blues , Folk , Country , Advent Garde , Comedy , it has it all The Who - Quadrophenia The best rock album ever made ? Of course , and hearing this as a 16 year old going on 17 , I was living the album ! (But Not a Mod , I was a Rocker ) E.L.O. - A New World Record This album got me into buying just more than Beatle albums , at the time , a band that made me sit up realise that there was not only The Beatles could blow me away . Telephone Line . A perfect song . The Beatles Revolver . The last track . Imagine hearing that , when you had been watching Top of the Pops week in and week out . The Beatles - Abbey Road . Yet again , The Fab Four just got me hooked into album buying , and they were worth every penny . Wings - Band On The Run . This was a begining that led to Sgt. Pepper , but it is McCartney at his best in the album solo stakes . John Lennon , John Lennon Plastic Ono Band . If you have heard this album , you will be noding your head right now and I don`t need to put into words how life changing this album is when you are a working class lad being told by Lennon how it is . Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water . Bought by my older brother (I was 8 when I heard this ) it got me intranced by the almost story telling of Simons song writing and when I think now how I must have been injected by the sounds and harmonies and the beauty of this album that stayed with me for most of my life .
