  1. I like the new song. Lyrics are the usual meh from them, musically it's top notch. Mix is acceptable. Promising.
  2. Only in the box set at the moment: http://store.moderbo...oducts/box-set/ Well that sucks. Certainly not worth getting the whole box.
  3. Yes, that came before Atom Heart Mother. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Floyd_discography
  4. Then your collection should start with Saucerful. They needed a bit of time to get warmed up, and less "weird".
  5. I'm *trying* to like Distant Satellites (their latest one). It's been on repeat in the car since I posted a day or two ago. But I'm coming to the same conclusion as Greg - they're maybe, just maybe, prog-lite on that recording. A tiny bit more prog on their prior couple albums. I haven't gone back much further past We Are Who We Are. It is generally very nice, soaring music and the exceptional use of dynamics to accomplish their builds, like someone previously posted, is certainly noteworthy. But it's a stretch to say there's much virtuosity or pushing of the envelope taking place.
  6. [opinion] Court of the Crimson King is one of only a few albums by KC I don't own. I had it a while back, then dumped it with a bunch of other CDs when they still had value. Don't miss it. I also don't care for Barrett era Floyd. My PF collection starts with Atom Heart Mother. [/opinion]
  7. Can safely add Katatonia's "The Fall of Hearts" and the Anderson Stolt collaboration to the best of '16 list. Haken's "Affinity" still in the lead for me though. Anderson Stolt a very close second.
  8. I'm slowly getting into them. They do prog-lite very well, but they have a good variety of music from album to album. Favorites thus far have been We're Here... and Weather Systems. I'll need to give Distant Satellites a few more spins.
  9. Any need tickets for Poughkeepsie next Saturday (July 30)? Both my companions just bailed. :-/
  10. Just like with Rush, all phases of Opeth have their pros/cons. I'll be doing my obligatory preorder, as I have for their last two.
  11. Agree with Haken and Frost* : http://www.therushfo...20#entry4010866 Gojira's "Magma" is a touch short on content (a few filler tracks, nearly EP length of actual quality songs). Otherwise I like several of those tracks very much. They've managed to polish their sound while staying "heavy". There's a lot of good albums thus far in 2016, but only a handful of really great albums. Average year in music. Sadly not every album by every band released every year is great. :(
  12. I don't have a tape deck anymore either. Being 41, I was around when it was largely vinyl and soon cassettes dominating the music scene. We have it good today, and I've not a single ounce of nostalgia for the "[not-so]good old days". When CD players and eventually CD burners became affordable, the cassette and vinyl market literally vanished, and it was nearly overnight. This wasn't by accident or some big conspiracy. CDs were so much better than what they replaced it literally made no sense to continue to use the old formats. If you like album art, most bands sell their "art". Otherwise, it's a niche market generally intended for those suffering tactile fixation. Audio is technically superior, being an analog format [exceptions noted in the link below]. But can most notice the supposed difference versus CD quality? Unlikely, at least not on comparable equipment. It's all about perception, you are told it's better so naturally you expect it to sound better and warmer. A compact disc with a modern DAC [most modern CD players are more than adequate] create a very high oversample, and wouldn't sound any less 'warm' to the average listener. It's arguable if even well trained ears can actually hear the difference (blind tests with high resolution audio have determined it's mostly placebo). The human ear and its inherent limitations are the issue, not the playback medium. Storage wise - modern music can't be beat by anything prior. I have a room full of records in acceptable quality on a single tiny MP3/FLAC player. Records require physical intervention to change tracks, get dirty and scratched easily, are more easily susceptible to warping/deformation, can sound poor nearer the end of a side (link below explains why), requires a relatively large playback device (there's nothing compact or streamlined about a turntable) that can lose its calibration and/or need belts and needles replaced. Good info: http://www.oregonliv...und_better.html When asking why vinyl is "great" you need to also ask what's *wrong* with CDs. Well?
  13. The underlying issue is how BIG ticketbastard is (millions of users?), and how many vouchers are likely in circulation now. More vouchers than seats reserved/shows, and I suspect all by design.
  14. Did you expect this to be constructed in such a way to work in OUR favor? That's not how business works in 'Merica.
  15. I always liked this. Phish are all about fun. ;)
  16. Haha funny you should mention that... here's how he 'introduces' Routine at the show...
  17. Is It Love is an awesome song, Kyrie is a solid anthem and Broken Wings is definitely one of the better ballads from the decade of "the ballad". People lump them in with the '80s equivalent of bubble gum rock, but they had more in common with say Tears For Fears than they did Foreigner.
  18. Why kid? Their drummer has gone on to become a prog legend. Their songs were well written and performed. All the musicians in the band were skilled, I think all had prior studio work to their credit and were formally trained on their instruments. They even decided, when at their peak of popularity, to go a different direction and essentially sabotage their own careers for sake of their integrity. Nope, nothing to like here. [the track below sounds eerily like some of Rush's output from the same era] http://youtu.be/lyyqqT0C6o0 The album that never was, because the record company basically didn't think they could sell it: http://youtu.be/X1PLrLKlO_8
  19. Haken's "Affinity" is a very strong record, any year/decade. Radiohead's new album (finally got to listen to it) is good if you're into their drony moodscapes. Frost* "Falling Satellites" is an interesting take on Pop-Prog, some great songs on that. There's a ton of new music coming out regularly and plenty of places online to keep tabs on it. Which place to visit/subscribe depends on what you like to listen to.
