  1. Cygnus by a mile. Its a very good song, other than some of Geddy's wailing at the very end. The Necromancer is, to my ears, one of their 15 - 20 worst songs. No contest.
  2. And was so often the case Rushgoober was right on the money. Could not have put it any better. Wonder what happened to goober. He stopped at 29999 posts and vanished. A real pity since I always enjoyed his posts and frequently agreed with him. Hope he returns someday. That being said I would also add that, in Picards case the Klingons respected him a great deal. Counts for a lot. If the poll was modified to include Sisko and Janeway my vote would still go to Picard. Got a ton of respect for Sisko however and really liked him. Janeway?? No way. By far my least favorite of the 5 captains and my least favorite of all 5 shows.
  3. Psssft Lorne Greene was the better Adama. Totally agree. Lorne Greene was awesome in Bonanza (a great show) and was the better Adama.
  4. The bigger question should be, why is it getting so many votes?
  5. Agreed that the voting will get tough now. But no way it should be PoW, GUP or FBN. Hemispheres gets my vote.
  6. Agree about PoW, Snakes, and Counterparts. Strongly disagree about Presto, and I wouldn't call HYF one of their best by a longshot, but it has some very good songs. At least half of Test For Echo is very good, and Vapor Trails is quite the achievement. I guess we will agree to disagree over Presto & VT - although the re-mix of VT is an improvement. Great point about T4E. How could I not have mentioned it?? Same on me for not mentioning it. The first side is very good. Unfortunately the 2nd side has Virtuality and Dog Years but it also has the wonderful Resist and Carve Away the Stone. Its a very good addition to their catalog. A big hell no from me on this suggestion,
  7. PoW & HYF are 2 of their best albums. Presto, S & A and Counterparts are all very good. Give them up? Hell no!!!!
  8. I agree that DT Jesus was a horrible name. When I read that in the liner notes I expected even less from the album. I actually got a good chuckle out of it since it was so bad. Made my low expectations even lower. Then I listened to the album. Somehow they made it work great - for my ears. To me it made sense. I agree that its still lame but its a lame that fits for me. and to my ears the music and story fit so well together. To each their own. BTW - I liked the cover songs on Fight for the Rock. No accounting for taste (or lack of it I guess). Thanks again for the great thread!!!
  9. Excellent post. Except I would go slightly further and say that I like Hemispheres, not love it. Its a fine, ok, middle of the pack song. Nothing wrong with it but nothing special. 2112, for all the reasons listed, is far better. Got my vote - no second thoughts needed. Agreed! Hemispheres is just...average in the best way possible. I am glad they quit the epics after this, as the result was expansive shorter "epics" like Red Barchetta, Natural Science and The Camera Eye. They have a greater impact on the senses than any five minute segment of Hemispheres. I like the way you said " average in the best way possible". Its a good average Rush song. If you compare it to the the broader universe of Rock music its better than most stuff (hence, IMO, the "best way possible" is spot on). But when compared to Rush's music its just a decent average. I also agree with you on them quitting the epics. Their had been a time and place for them but it was time to move on, change and grow. The epics I really like (2112, By-Tor, Xanadu) are just that - epic. I love them. But rather than continuing to try them and become stuck in what they were doing they changed, created other types of songs and their art grew as a result. In some ways it makes me appreciate the epics even more since I have the, in some ways equally epic, post epic period (PW, MP, synth era and post synth era) to compare the epics to. Yes, I used "epic" a lot in that last sentence but it was done so on purpose. It was designed to be an epic sentence (chuckle). As for Red Barchetta, The Camera Eye and Natural Science I am glad you mentioned them. Natural Science is, to my ears, still part of the epic era but almost a farewell to it. Like it more than Hemispheres but I like the live versions way more than the studio. Red Barchetta is, for me, a top 10 - 15 Rush song. Way better than Hemispheres. The Camera Eye is a song I actually find hard to place. Its not an "epic" but its not what they were turning into. Like Natural Science its sort of a transition song. Its actually like Hemispheres for me. Good, solid song. But nothing great. But I agree that it is somewhat better than Hemispheres.
  10. These guys were another of the awesome, arse kicking 80's metal groups that are unfortunately overlooked and mostly forgotten. IMO Sirens was good. Power of the Night and Fight for the Rock even better. Then you get the magnificent Hall of the Mountain King. Unfortunately the group followed it up with Gutter Ballet - an album I so looked forward to and which, IMO, was a flop. After Gutter I sort of gave up on the group and was not expecting much when I picked up Streets. Man was I wrong!!!! If Hall of the Mountain King was magnificent, Streets made magnificent seem insignificant!!!! I must have played it every night for months on end. Sadly, none of their work after Streets even came close (IMO) to Power of the Night or Fight for the Rock - much less the incredible Hall of the Mountain King or the doubly incredible Streets. Still, those 2 albums (and to a lesser extent the other albums prior to Hall) - wow. What amazing music.
  11. Just saw this. Wow. Not good but could be so much worse from the sounds of it. Nest wish's to Bruce and his family.
  12. Saw that Earl had started another thread and, without looking at what it was about, I figured "Cool another great thread about metal - most likely 80's metal. Earl is a man of great taste and is always starting great threads about the wonderful metal of the 80's". Than I saw what the thread was about and my jaw almost fell in shock. Not what I expected. That being said, as so often is the case, I am in 100% agreement with Earl (like I said Earl is clearly a man of great taste). I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel's greatest hits album and still love their music to this day.
  13. Got a good chuckle out of this and yes, it sums it up for me. 2112 gets my vote, by a hair, over MP. CA is not bad actually but compared to the other 2 yes, it s howard the duck. Not in their class. BTW - thanks for the laugh.
  14. Please yes - again it gets my vote.
  15. Where is the "Its a tie" choice? Both are great. Signals clearly has the best song (Subdivisions). But overall - its a tie. At least tonight. Both have a ton of great songs and both have a few duds. Overall both are wonderful albums.
  16. No!! Losing it is wonderful. Countdown I used to not like but over time I have come enjoy and appreciate it.
  17. S & A is far, far better. Better songs. Wayyyy better production than the original VT. The remixed VT has (obviously) significantly better production than the original and is, consequently, a major improvement but its still nothing special. S & A has a ton of great songs - Armor & Sword, Far Cry, Hope, We Hold On, Working them Angles, The Larger Bowl, The Way the Wind Blows. Spindthrift & Faithless are not half bad. What VT got? Ghost Rider & Peaceable Kingdom are good. Other than that the original gives a headache and the remix is better but still none of the other songs really stand out in a good way. S & A all the way!!!
  18. CoS gets my vote. How HYF is losing to CoS is beyond me - IMO HYF is one of Rush's 3 best albums. For that matter I would have voted CoS off before any other album save VT. Looks like I may get to vote CoS in the next round again.
  19. Excellent post. Except I would go slightly further and say that I like Hemispheres, not love it. Its a fine, ok, middle of the pack song. Nothing wrong with it but nothing special. 2112, for all the reasons listed, is far better. Got my vote - no second thoughts needed.
  20. Def Leppard are an amazing live band. Great musicians, fun music and they have a deep appreciation for all things rock and roll. They always give their fans their money's worth live. I saw them summer of 2012. They were fantastic. Perfect sound, and their performance was full of energy. Got to hear a lot of good deep cuts that night, like Gods Of War, Saturday Night (High N' Dry), etc. Amazing show. Only downside was that I had to sit through Lita Ford and Poison before the Lep came out roaring. I saw that tour as well...fantastic! I saw them tour with Kiss last summer... ...they blew Kiss off the stage, even with all of the Kiss theatrics. Kiss was the reason I DIDN'T go see Def Leppard last summer. Kiss are absolute trash now. Paul can't sing and hasn't been able to sing since Ace left the band. Hell, they should have actually called it after the Farewell Tour, like they were supposed to. As for the original comment which started this thread I will sort of agree - in a backhanded way. How are they still touring?? Good question. Look what they have gone through over the years. (1) Pete Willis tossed out. (2) Rick's arm. (3) Steve Clark RIP (4) Joe's voice aint close to what it was (5) Vivian's cancer. Yet they go on - and many are we blessed and lucky that they do. They put on a great live show. I agree with many of the comments about them going down hill. Their first 3 albums were great. Hysteria had some good songs. Even the follow up to that had some good stuff. Since then - no. But many they can play live. I agree with the comment about skipping them last years because of them playing with KISS. Thats what I did. This year I may try to ho see them with Tesla (who I saw them with back on the Hysteria Tour) and Styx. As for the 2012 show - IMHO that was a great show. I agree DL was fantastic. Only I would disagree with the review of Lita Ford & Poison. Lita was ok. Poison was like DL - fantastic. Every time I have seen them they have put on a great live show. I don't know how DL is still going but, IMO, man are we lucky they are. Same is true about Poison - another fantastic live act.
  21. Somebody mention Priest and Maiden earlier and yes, those would be must sees. I have only seen Maiden once and that was way back on the Somewhere in Time Tour in 1987 (I think). Priest I saw on the Ram it Down and Painkiller Tours and I would love to see the again. Problem is both of those groups are not spring chickens either. Somebody else mentioned Journey and ever since they got the singer via the internet they have put on great shows so they would be another must see. But how much longer will they be around?? Most of the guys in the groups are as old as Rush - or perhaps older. And of course their is always Def Lepard. Still puts on a fine show. But they are not young. Bob Segar is definitely a must see but he is far older than Rush. I really want to see Nightwish and they will be playing NYC in April so perhaps they will become the next can't miss show. I have never seen them before but their "End of an Era" & "Live and Wacken" DVD's are great. Anybody see them in person?? What are they like live??? Only problem for me is that at my age (49 in April) I have gotten so I don't like in door shows. My ears are starting to suffer from to many in door metal shows and I would like to preserve my hearing should I live, like my parents, into my late 80's (and counting). At this point I like being out on the lawn - which Nightwish is not playing. Sigh. It will be hard to come up with something to fill in for the guys. Perhaps will do something crazy and go in a totally different direction. I do like classical & opera so maybe I will go that way.
  22. It'll be 2112 before this thing is done. Yes - Deckiller please come back and finish your countdown!!!! This is one of my all time favorite threads!!!!!!!
  23. 100% with you on those feelings.
