Yes, i know that rush is taking a year off from touring. However i still see them doing a late fortieth anniversary tour (R40 anyone?) when they return. So how should we spend this upcoming year while we wait for Rush to return? By creating the best setlists for the next tour. R30 was great, but they really focused on stuff from the late 80s and 90s, as well as their cover songs from feedback. This next tour should include songs from their early albums, as well as songs they havent played in a while (seriously, name the last time they played fly by night!). So heres my ultimate setlist, dominated with 70s and 80s classics, but still having more recent stuff peppered here and there.

Set one
Bastille day
Time stand still
Roll the bones
Lessons OR making memories
Vital signs
One little victory
Limelight
The trees
Subdivisions
Medley combining cygnus x-1 and hemispheres
Far cry

Set two
Tom sawyer
Closer to the heart
In the mood/drum solo
Caravan
Fly by night
Farewell to kings
YYZ
Animate
Spirit of radio
Working man
Red barchetta
La villa strangiato (with polka intro from time machine tour)

Encore
Passage to bangkok
Red sector A
2112 (overture+finale)
Marathon

I am reading through the setlist thinking this guy wants to completely destroy what's left of Geddy's voice.

Why would I want to hear Making Memories or Lessons?

Fly by night hasn't been played for years due to the octave Geddy has to sing it in. Seriously, it would sound like garbage if it was attempted nowadays. Face it, it's a young mans tune which I can't see them playing anymore.

I want more VT, TfE, CP and SnA!

Secret Touch
Main Monkey Business
Time and motion
Limbo
Earthshine
Between Sun and Moon
Leave that Thing Alone

And on the one in a billion chance: (won't ever happen)

Alien Shore
Cut to the Chase
Good News first
Nocturne
Freeze
Totem

I'd be in favor of all of those except BS&M.  Give me The Color of Right instead.

And because Neil strongly dislikes the majority pre-Moving Pictures Rush. Not all, but most. Many interviews has him saying that he feels Rush truly started with MP. I'm sure he had to be convinced against his will to play Closer to the Heart in the TM tour. And I'm certain that he probably dislikes Working Man as well, but can't in good conscience veto a song that he didn't write.

Oh, I love these. Okay, I'll do it, but I'll do it in the best interest of Geddy's voice. Do I like Something For Nothing and Cygnus X-1 Books 1 and 2, Hell yes. Do I want Geddy to try and sing these now? Hell no. And there is one song I don't think Geddy can sing anymore that's actually quite recent: Earthshine.

Set 1
  • One Little Victory

  • Freewill

  • Subdivisions

  • Afterimage

  • YYZ

  • Clockwork Angels

  • Animate

  • The Big Money

  • Vital Signs

  • Workin' Them Angels

  • The Trees

  • Countdown

  • Secret Touch
Set Two
  • Tom Sawyer

  • Test For Echo

  • Dreamline

  • Red Barchetta

  • Cold Fire

  • Distant Early Warning

  • Leave That Thing Alone

  • Witch Hunt

  • Mission

  • Headlong Flight (with drum solo)

  • Closer To The Heart

  • Xanadu (full version)

  • Red Sector A

  • 2112 Overture, Temples Of Syrinx, Grand Finale

  • Working Man (think Rush in Rio, drop the reggae BS)
Encore
  • Far Cry

  • The Spirit Of Radio

  • Crossroads

  • Limelight
Tried to give it a good mix of AFTK-present day. They can do Xanadu, Geddy's voice hasn't changed that much since R30 except I doubt he can sing Earthshine anymore.

EDIT: can't believe I forgot La Villa. Throw La Villa Strangiato in between Xanadu and Red Sector A.

If Geddy's voice wasn't an issue, I'd like to see a track from each album. Maybe something like this:

Set 1:
Before and After
Anthem
I Think I'm Going Bald (Or Bacchus Plateau! Can't decide.)
Something For Nothing
Cinderella Man
La Villa Strangiato
Jacob's Ladder
The Camera Eye
Broon's Bane
Digital Man

Set 2:
The Body Electric
Mystic Rhythms
Force Ten
The Rhythm Method
Anagram (for Mongo)
Where's My Thing?
Double Agent
Time And Motion
Earthshine
The Main Monkey Business
The Anarchist

Encore:
2112 (All of it, just so that the guy who was sitting behind me at Birmingham on the CA tour would be happy. He shouted, '2112! I can't believe it! This song is like 20 minutes long or something, I thought the concert was nearly over!' Also, I hate medleys or shortened versions of songs, because I am grumpy.)

Strange thread to excise from the graveyard of posts from yesteryear, especially since they really are likely retired from touring, but...

Set One:

01. The Big Money
02. Cinderella Man
03. Something For Nothing
04. The Body Electric
05. Second Nature
06. We Hold On
07. Roll The Bones
08. Totem
09. Territories
10. Entre Nous
11. Vital Signs
12. Subdivisions

Set Two:

01. 2112: Overture / The Temples of Syrinx
02. The Way The Wind Blows
03. Lakeside Park
04. The Garden
05. Presto
06. Prime Mover
07. Circumstances
08. Between The Sun & Moon
09. Kid Gloves
10. Limelight
11. Nocturne
12. By-Tor & the Snow Dog

Encores:

1. The Spirit of Radio
2. Tom Sawyer
3. Working Man

This will never happen, but it would be the most career-spanning set list possible with at least one song from each album except Feedback, because that album contains no actual RUSH songs. It also contains a healthy mix of concert favourites and songs that are never / have never been played live.

I tried to pick what would be a realistic set as far the length, but I selfishly picked songs I have not heard, or have not heard played live often. There are also a couple that I don't think they would play at all for their own reasons. But it is a dream anyway! lol
