Not to get all braggy about all the albums, CDs, DVDs, Tourbooks, Tour Shirts, Ticket stubs, Books, Posters, Magazines, nick-nacks etc. - but rather to just share something that you might find interesting - my most prized Rush collectibles:

http://i951.photobucket.com/albums/ad352/cygnify/Autographs/RUSH3.jpg

And a little story for this last one: Neil Peart's Drumsticks. In March 1994, I made a last minute decision to go to a Rush concert solo in St. Pete, FL. After the show, I met Larry Allen (Neil's drum tech) and asked him if he could snag a pair of sticks for me. After some persuasion ("I knew your name, man!") he walked up to Neil's kit and took these sticks right off it - sticks that were just used to play YYZ. One stick is even cracked! I walked out of the Thunderdome in disbelief, clutching these sticks...

The postcards are so cool! Neil writes about them in one of his books, but i have never seen one IRL. Did not realize they were so personalized, he put some real effort into them.

Prior to those ones posted, Neil used to actually write out the entire card...if I had a scanner I'd post pictures of mine...

and Chris:

WE ARE! ;-)

You could take a picture with your cell phone or something- that would be really cool to see, even if hte image is not super great. Looks like you came close to not getting the one card- it has a change of address label on it-

Ok, good idea! ....here ya go:

And he even mentions a specific song- Middletown Dreams-

Do you remember what you said in your letter to him?

Just a bunch of questions, it was 1985 and there wasn't much detail about things, so I wasn't sure what kinds of China's he was using, and seeing the pictures, wasn't overly sure of whether he was using the wrong end of the stick, etc...Didn't know how to ask about the "4 limb" stuff, and my friends and I called them boogidie boogidies! (and yes I took his advice and got them down)

The reason he mentioned Middletown Dreams was I lived in Middletown, PA at the time, so I'm guessing he picked up on that.

That seems very coincidental that you sent him a letter talking about your plans, from a town called Middletown, the very same year he comes out with a song about ambitions (realized or otherwise) called "Middletown Dreams".

THis post card was actually sent to me after the album was released. But there's more to the story...

I have another post card that I keep in the same frame with a pen and ink print of Neil at his drums (Rosewood Tama's, Circa PW/MP) that has some water damage at the top from when it was stored in a damp place years back. The cards are masking the water damage, and I have the card I posted facing with writing/signature out and the other card facing picture out so you can see what the front AND backs look like. (and it's tough to take out and put back, or I'd just take a picture of it)

In a prior letter I sent to him, (the post card I received back is dated 1983) I mentioned that I was having trouble finding a band, and wanted to know the secret of getting good, and finding the right band etc. (along with some other questions) He seemed to focus upon my frustration with not being able to find the right band etc. and gave me some encouraging words.

When Power Windows came out, my friend and I saw the name of the tune and went "huh?" after we listened to the tune, my friend said something to the effect of "DUDE THIS SONG IS ABOUT YOU!" and mentioned the post card I received and all that... I, of course, wrote it off and said that maybe some of what I said stuck with him when he was writing, or at least the name of our town stuck with him, whatever (and there are crap loads of Middletown's so...but after reading how he puts things into a little book of lyrics, I think it's possible?!?!

But I'm not laying claim as to being the inspiration for the song.

There could very easily be a connection though. Even though he undoubtedly received thousands and thousands of letters from fans talking about their dreams and ambitions, receiving one from a town called "Middletown" might have triggered it as a perfect backdrop to write the song in. There must be a cumulative effect in his writing, he had driven through many "Middletowns" while touring- and while thinking about what happened to the the dreams of the people that never left, he recieved letters from young fans eager to leave their own "Middletowns". But the idea to actually call this symbolic town "Middletown"- well, It would be very easy to see how receiving a letter like yours from a real Middletown could have added to the creative process.

Yep, sort of how I feel, really.

Learning of his creative process makes me think that my letter was a possible footnote in his idea book...and something clicked.

But when they DO play the song, (like this past tour) I get a silly grin on my face!

That's Cool!

Thanks for sharing.

That's a damn cool story.

That's why we're here...

(Why are we here? Because we're here... Roll the Bones....)

I'd love to see other's posted as well..I always thought this was a cool thing until it got overwhelming...which is what I'm worried about with sending stuff to get signed when on tour...AS more people learn they can do it, it can potentially get out of hand..

I only found out he did this after he wrote the letter saying he wasn't doing it anymore because one person on the Internet said he was doing this and ruined it for everyone else.

Not a lot of collectables - just a lot of the music and Neil's books.

PLUS a motorcycle I bought from Neil a few years back. I believe it was the one he purchased just after the "Ghost Rider" travels. That was a R1100GS - now in the AMA museum - and mine is a R1150GS (custom RED of course).

Doctor says It has to go soon, so if there any riders out there and want it I think it would be cool that the next owner would be a RUSH fan.

PM for info.

Vinyl collectors can you please answer this: Is there any difference with UK/US versions of the FBN inners? Do they both contain the blue lyric sheet? Thanks.

First US pressings have the lyric sheet. I don't have any UK pressings of Fly By Night. I've got a Canadian (Which I'd would assume would have one) and some Anthems, but they don't have any either.

There's also a black variation of the lyric sheet which, if I recall correctly, is from one of my US pressings.

Hope that helps..

Thankyou for the reply. A UK FBN came up as a mint but of course for a pretty penny, I'm still trying to get details what's contained within. Anyways I finally got a US Moving Pictures bought locally which I'm mega stoked about. Just the debut and FBN to go for old stuff then it's the pita 90s so I guess I better start saving. Wish I had started collecting much earlier on.

My favourite Rush vinyl that I own is a test pressing of Moving Pictures- white label mastered by Bob Ludwig. I knew it was Moving Pictures, but thought it was a promo copy for years, until someone on another forum identified it for me.

That's awesome. I've never seen one of those except on another forum.
