Does anyone have any tips or tricks they use when playing this?  I look at that jumble and try to figure it out, and nothing comes to my mind.  Am I stupid or something?  ph34r.gif  laugh.gif

haha, no! it just takes time and you have to know the lyrics well.

i write it out and count the letters. then i arrange them underneath in alphabetical order and count them again (making sure i get the same number and didn't miss any)

one benefit of having it in alpha order is the ability to quickly check for specific letters.

for instance, while solving EM's one today, i found magnetic, but there were no P's in the puzzle which ruled out the magnetic north we know from Prime Mover because the puzzle was too long to be just magnetic north and in Prime Mover, both the lines above and below have the word "point". so i moved on to the lyrics for CTTC.

another benefit is having a second scrambling or view of the string. sometimes just rearranging them makes words jump out.

once i have the puzzle set up, i start looking for large words first, making lists of any word that could come from the puzzle and comparing them to my memory of rush lyrics.

example: i see the word "moon" so i try to remember all of the instances of moon and comparing the surrounding lyrics against the alpha set (the mighty ocean dances with the moon - nope, no D ) (rising with the full moon - nope, only one L) and so forth

i look for letter combinations such as ing or ight or ck or th, etc, and for small words that would indicate time, direction and verbs which often trigger a song's setting in my memory.

also, infrequent letters can narrow down the possibilities. how many times are you going to see Q? and there's only so many rush lyrics that have X - specially if there is not an accompanying E wink.gif

anyone else want to share? i'd be interested in learning new strategies, too.

That sounds like a great strategy, Rolinda. No wonder you win all the time! laugh.gif

I use Scrabble letter tiles laid out inside the cover, and simply spell out the anagram. This allows me jiggle them around, and spell out individual words as Rolinda described. Here's a pic of one of the hardest ones I ever solved -

There are shortcuts. If you get a word you think might fit, you can run a search of the Anthems page, but it's more satisfying to get it straight.

I also use post-it notes, sticking one on the computer and then using others to keep a check on common words ie. - the, we then, they, of, there etc. as well as the letter combinations outlined by Rolinda. Using the Scrabble tiles is what allows me come up with the nonsense guesses I occasionally post!!!.

And with those tips in mind, try this.......

As plans for the new tour are advanced, it's emerged that the Special Effects guys want to introduce genetically modified animals into an elaborate new stage show. There are expected to be strong protests outside Radio City Music Hall when the first night of the tour introduces a fire breathing cat with scales in a cage acting out the role of Nebbish during OLV.

The headline in "Cat Lovers' Monthly" reads -

G.M. Cat Theme In New York Hall

PS - Full stops for effect only, not part of answer

YO! FIRE AT PORN PARTY!

True story -

This happened in the late seventies, and Rush's intrepid producer Broon was at the party in question before things got a bit too hot. At such parties, it was well known that some of the "guests" were prepared to indulge in no holds barred action in return for.........a small show of gratitude (like $200).

Next morning, Broon arrived home in an obvious state of disaray, which his father mistook as being an indication that his beloved son had been at it like rabbits with a person/persons unknown all night.

The conversation was a short one -

"Pay For It, Terry? No Pa!!!
