Segue Myles
PoW, easy. 10/10 as far as I care to rank, which of course makes all the albums I rank above it 10/10s as well, but this is a general rank. If it were just between rush albums, I would probably drop it to 9/10, just for not being quite as awesome as the very top tier of albums. GuP is an 8/10, though I could be persuaded to give it 9/10. Production kills it; the guy they got in to produce for them barely did any producing relative to admiring and observing the band, leaving Geddy to try his hand at producing while trying to do all of his regular jobs as well. It turned out much colder and deader than anyone really wanted, but most of the material speaks for itself. However, this album easily lacks in groove more than most Rush albums, a lot being played just as straight, pristine, and surgically as it was produced (Most notably Afterimage and Red Sector A, exceptions including DEW and TEW). The album also fails to utilize dynamics very well. It creates a unique and Orwellian atmosphere, but that's not always enjoyable. I have to say, that coldness is a major reason I love the atmosphere so much in GUP!
Blue J
I like the slightly more foreboding atmosphere that cloaks Grace Under Pressure. But I also like Power Windows, much more now than I used to. It's a very strong record. Grace has one big clunker, in Red Lenses. But I still think it has an edge over Power Windows, overall. I like the atmosphere and bleak cold darkness of the album. The album cover itself speaks volumes.
bluefox4000
The production is a big Turn off for Grace.........so dead to my ears. PoW is much more alive to my ears. Grace the production and songs are to detached for my taste. Mick

Grace the production and songs are to detached for my taste. Mick I agree that Power Windows is just brimming with energy...it crackles with life. ;) But I still love Grace more. Exactly. The energy of PoW has no place on GUP. The songs called for a completely different style, and the songs benefited greatly from the hard, cold production. The music is dark, the plushness of PoW would ruin the mood of songs like Distant Early Warning or Between The Wheels. For goodness sake, a PoW version of Red Sector A would be offensive, considering the subject matter! GUP is flawless. I love music by artists like Massive Attack and Nine Inch Nails, and it shares that same level of emotional frankness, undiluted and powerful, that enables those to connect fully with it. GUP is the closest Rush ever got to releasing a goth rock album, ala The Cure or Fields Of The Nephelim. I absolutely adore it, inside and out!
bluefox4000
I think in all Seriousness......I just don't like goth rock. And as Segue said. Grace is knocking on that style's door. Mick

Mick Exactly! It is not at all a goth rock album, but it shares some of that genres dark, electronic sensibilities. I find PoW a fluffy experience. More ET when I prefer Schindler's List.

DistantEarlySignals
Grace gets a nine b/c of Afterimage and Distant Early Warning. I'd give Power Windows an eleven or twelve out of ten if I could. Still both fantastic albums (it's true!). fritz44
Not my favourite albums by a long chalk. GUP was the last vinyl LP I bought and it was alright at first listening, but it grew on me. Can't stand Power Windows! The art work is sh*te, the production too polished and the music is too keyboards orientated. Probably my least liked LP by the boys.
