Okay, I just want to say up front that if Limelight isn't one of Alex's best solos, then these lists approach the unreal for those who think and feel.

Freewill has a great solo, too—you guys have some good lists, but Limelight and Freewill are DEFINITELY two of the finest solos out there.

My favorite Lerxst guitar solos are in the following tunes:

Working Man

The Necromancer (2 great solos - the ends of both Under The Shadow and Return Of The Prince)

The Fountain Of Lamneth (many great solos in this but No One At The Bridge stands out)

2112 (specifically the end of Presentation)

Xanadu

La Villa Strangiato (this should be on everyone's list)

Limelight

The Analog Kid

Headlong Flight

The Garden

My favourite of all is that little burst of guitar in the third part of Natural Science,it sings. That'swhat I love about Alex's guitar solos, you can sing them.

yeah, they are pretty melodic!

An old guitar teacher told me anyone can shred but it can sound like meaningless doodling. The sign of a good guitar solo is if you can sing the solo.I've taken that approach to my solo playing,in one of my songs,Castaway I tried to emulate the build up in La Villa Strangiato but alas the rest of the band being Australians hadn't heard of Rush, and it didn't quite turn out as planned.

The guitar playing by Alex on Hemispheres is very intense and alot harder than people think.I would say most Rush fans can play the 2112 stuff but playing some of the sections of Hemispheres, and keeping it in time is hard.
