  1. I love playing records in my car. When you're done you can use them as a table or as a Frisbee in the park. Play catch with your dog. Ladies 45's can be used as earrings but only if they are matching. I just love Vinyl, so versatile! :codger: I understand. Hey, I don't live in a cave! I use CD's and MP3's as well. I also realize this is a partial Troll... that said... I'll bite. I love Frisbee... I have had many great Frisbee sessions while smoking nugs and enjoying "vitamin A" while jamming ESL...and no, vinyl does not make a good Frisbee... maybe a decent "James Bond Villain" weapon? I think a well-trained super-villain could behead someone w/ a vinyl record if they knew all the proper factors: gravity, spindrift, weight ratios, polarity, inertia, etc. All I am saying Swami is... life is too short NOT to indulge in the little things that make life worth living. Most of us can't indulge every night... most nights it's sirloin and boxed wine. But when it's time to treat oneself... I enjoy Prime grade 3" bone-in Ribeye and a bottle of 2001 Cakebread from the cellar. I own 5 bottles of 20+ y/o Scotch...but on most nights, it's a dram of Old Pulteney! In most of the rooms in my house, there are smaller TV's w/ no stereo system...but in my living room is the 65" Samsung 3-D LED Smart TV w/ a pimped out Yamaha home theater. Do you see where I'm going with this? Is it practical to play Vinyl all the time? Of course not! But down in my studio basement, when I really want to treat my brain/ears to pure audiophile indulgence... It's my Technics and Event Monitors, a pipe, a snifter of Napoleon, and I'm in the Q-Zone! Life happens my friend...all I'm saying is stop and smell the roses. But, if you really cannot discern and appreciate the massive difference between vinyl and not vinyl... then why go on about it? Obviously...it's like Bubble Tape... It's for US and not You!
  2. Perhaps you don't possess the deft touch required to keep your vinyl clean and healthy, nor the sophistication/acuity to recognize it's audible superiority. I'm here to help. Some things are worth the extra effort. This is sad commentary that, frankly, should be below you. (judging from your generally positive postings) Treat your vinyl like a lady and you'll benefit greatly from the warmth, tone, and superior groove. Keep her well protected, (a nice jacket is always a good thing), use a gentle touch when placing her on the spindle, make sure your stylus gently penetrates the groove, then turn her on and pump it up! And once you are finished, no matter how intense the session gets, treat her with great respect and a delicate touch before placing her back on the shelf... and she will treat you right year in and out! :mwah:
  3. Are you serious? Who DOESN'T have a record player??! :codger: Mine's a Technics SL-1210MK2 Boyeee.... and if you truly wanna become a serious audio-phile... I can personally guarantee you... nothing sounds warmer, richer, or smoother than vinyl baby! RUSH ain't releasin' records cuz it's nostalgic or cool... they do it cuz they want their work heard the way it should be! In vinyl-coated goodness! Maybe ask Santa for a turntable?
  4. This Remix is a blessing. To me, it's like getting a brand new Rush album! I have always found Vapor Trails maddening. With the exception of Secret Touch (which I always dug), and occasionally a few minutes of Vapor Trails, Earthshine, and Peaceable Kingdom... I sadly found the 2002 VT virtually "un-listenable". As someone who makes a living writing music for TV (and who came up playing in Rush cover bands, lol), sound reinforcement is my job. I'm paid to make music and make it clean and palatable. I was crushed when I heard 2002 VT. I honestly couldn't believe what I was hearing... it was...*sob*...like watching your dad get beat up! How could this happen??? I mean, I knew they were going through a rough patch... but didn't they have professionals to mix and master their albums? I don't like all of Rush's albums... I'm not a huge fan of COS, CP, and TFE, and I simply loathe most of Presto and RTB... I just didn't like the sound, or the writing on those records... sure there were hidden gems throughout... but what sucked about VT was... I could tell these were good songs!!! WTF??? The energy, melody, and excitement of Rush "progressing" was there! But dammit, I couldn't enjoy it, cuz the record sonically sounded like mud, distortion, and well... shit. I have been counting the days (and years) for this remix... and now that it's here? THIS ALBUM f***ing KICKS ASS!!!!! Not only is it clean, transparent, and filled with virtuoso Rushy goodness, but there is an ass-ton of takes/tracks (vocal and instrumental) I simply haven't heard before! But most of all, what struck me about this remix (and it makes perfect sense) is how passionate the playing is. I never "felt" Ghost Rider before. I sympathized with it, but I always felt bad for Neil that he bared his soul and somehow the results were muffed. This album is passionate, bold, melodic, and brimming over with energy and experimental phrasing. Geddy is playing some of the most insane bass lines EVER. Forget HYF... if you are a fan of Geddy "getting up on it"... who knew these bass lines were buried here??? Ceiling Unlimited? Are you kidding me? I have a good friend and we argue about VT all the time. He always explained that I was wrong, and that the album sounded fine... it was grungy and reckless on purpose and it was a statement. I always argued that was a load... what's the point of playing all those notes and tracks if no one can hear/decipher them? VT Remastered is stunning. I was taken aback by all of the beautiful acoustic guitar layered by Alex... the anger, sorrow, and beauty in Neils drumming, and again... Geddy came out all bare-knuckled with the bass and his vocals are solid... lots of nifty harmonies, too! Now, it's all here for the taking! Oh, happy day! I only wish they would come back out and tour with this! I highly encourage all to buy their own copy of this! First of all to thank the fellas for listening to us, and caring enough to deliver this gem. It takes a lot of stones for masters of their craft to ask for a mulligan and admit they missed... it's even better that they crushed it. Also, it would tickle me if this charts high on Billboard. I would find it amusing if a re-release of an existing Rush album wreaks havoc on the charts and puts a whoopin' on some of the cookie-cutter garbage that's passing for music nowadays. Great job guys!
  5. Xanadu The Spirit of Radio The Big Money Digital Man The Camera Eye Freewill Headlong Flight Armor & Sword (although the solo needs to come up in the mix... it's just so unique) Red Sector A La Villa Strangiato
  6. Hi All. Dreams come true, and sometimes, good things happen to good people. I had bought what I thought were great seats for the San Antonio, TX show... it ends up that there was an ADA Handicapped seating outcropping right in front of our seats, and we couldn't see the stage at all... and could barely see the "screen". We asked an usher for help. She spoke w/ her manager and the manager sat in our seats and "confirmed" to guest services that we could not see the stage. They graciously moved us to the floor... right in front of the sound board! My wife, daughter, and myself had the time of our lives. I know (especially in this forum) I'll get some heat for taking my 3 y/o daughter to a RUSH concert...but she is a die-hard fan... and we bought her top-of-the-line noise cancelling headphones....she knows the lyrics, and even does choreographed "dances" to the songs. She's a HUGE Neil fan and wants to be a drummer (yes, we bought her a kit). It ends up that some of the techs and tour managers (who I will leave annonymous out of respect for their privacy) had such a great time watching my family "rock out" to RUSH, that we were given guitar picks and invited as VIP guests to the Houston, TX show! WOW! My little girl (Notice her Hand Made "Geddy Corn" shirt) hand-made a drum for Neil and gave it to Geddy at the "mette n greet" to give to Neil. (in our pictures w/ Alex and Geddy, Geddy is holding up the "drum" gift my daughter made Neil... I'll post it at a later date!). It ends up that word came from the top that the drum was given to Neil, and in return he sent out a pair of his used drumsticks for my daughter! The tour photographer caught this moment on film. Here is the link to that moment! http://www.rushshowp...71036&k=BcSMSwS Dreams can come true, and my family and myself will never forget the kindness and genrosity of RUSH and their magnificent crew! I have been a loyal RUSH fan since 1979, have played in a RUSH cover band, and I am a working musician as a profession (I produce music for many TV shows)...and I can honestly say that it is because of RUSH that I do what I do. Just wanted to share...happy holidays to all!
  7. Bwahahahaa...."drum kit made of thongs"... that's funny!...especially knowing Neil's temperament... Neil shooting thongs out of his T-Shirt Cannon??? Did anyone notice that the "thongs" sold at the Rush.Com Shop are always on sale? My wife pointed out it was because... "They are trying to unload the inventory cheap".... I asked why? She said "They've probably been sitting in the back room collecting dust for years..." Then she said: "Like Rush fans have girlfriends!" LOL! Touche'
  8. I agree...about everyone over-thinking this... and NO it's not because Geddy can't sing the songs anymore. Why do I say that, you ask? Because if they want to play a song they can simply tune down like they currently do (and have for a while) w/ 2112 (the red bass), and like they did w/ Circumstances on the S&A tour. I agree that it's simply because they want to play these 80's songs... songs they haven't played live in a long time, if ever. I happen to be a bigger fan of their late 70's early 80's material (AFTK-GUP)... and I wish the tour had more of it... but I think hearing all (or most) of CA is a good compromise. Clockwork Angels is easily the best offering since MP, and if you don't dig that mess... you got the wring damn address...Deep inside you all know that there WILL be another tour, and they WILL play a bunch of different tracks. This is just a phase. As long as they stay far away from a Presto/RTB/CP/T4E ensemble, I will be ecstatic no matter what they play. If they do go in that direction (God forbid), they better damn well have another EPIC awesome album to showcase like CA!
  9. Three Epics? Cygnus x-1 book 1 Cygnus x-1 Book 2: Hemispheres Jacob's Ladder
  10. Ok...just for fun, though! But I agree that we are deciding on the "Least Awesome" track...not the "worst"... well, for MOST of their catalog (more on this below)... hehe 1. Rush - In The Mood (sorry, I could never get past "Hey Cookie"...ugh!) 2. Fly by Night - Rivendell (I like the track, though) 3. Caress of Steel - I Think I'm Going Bald (ugh) 4. 2112 - The Twilight Zone (very meh) 5. A Farewell to Kings - Madrigal (I love this track...but, least awesome...) 6. Hemispheres - Sorry...can't do it... I'm only human! 7. Permanent Waves - Different Strings (meh) 8. Moving Pictures - Vital Signs (meh) 9. Signals - Countdown (meh) 10. Grace Under Pressure - Red Lenses (meh) 11. Power Windows - Emotion Detector (ugh) 12. Hold Your Fire - Tai Shan (wtf?) 13. Presto - TIE: War Paint/Superconductor/Anagram/Hand Over Fist (UGH) 14. Roll the Bones - TIE: Face Up/The Big Wheel/Heresy/Neurotica/You Bet Your Life (UGH) 15. Counterparts - The Speed of Love (meh) 16. Test for Echo - Dog Years (ugh/wtf?) 17. Vapor Trails - The Stars Look Down * 18. Snakes and Arrows - Spindrift (sorry, good intentions/bad execution) Best album since PoW! 19. Clockwork Angels - BU2B2 (story filler brought to you by the number 12) Best album since MP! For the record, I just try to pretend that Presto and Roll The Bones never happened (denial)... been trying to slowly get into Counterparts and T4E as the years go by...but it's just not happening (oh, how I try). But unlike Presto or RTB, those albums are mediocre...not awful. *Vapor Trails is it's own animal... I reserve judgement until they re-release it w/ a full remix. It's just too damn muddy/frustrating to immerse myself into... That is all.
  11. QUOTE (Tombstone Mountain @ Oct 4 2012, 11:31 AM) QUOTE (dakota2112 @ Oct 4 2012, 11:28 AM) Nobody mentioned Turn the Page yet? (sorry if they did and I missed it) That might trump them all! The bassline and vocal line have absolutely nothing to do with each other in that song. Nice one. We forget how brilliant of a bass album HYF is It's funny you mentioned that... now that you jarred my memory... in the article I mentioned...it was "Turn the Page" that Ged sited in having to learn to sing the in-between notes for the performance... well done!
  12. QUOTE (Tombstone Mountain @ Oct 4 2012, 08:58 AM) QUOTE (Torgo Satyr @ Oct 4 2012, 08:54 AM) As a singer/bass player myself... usually the bass line (of non-Rush/God bands) follows the rhythm dutifully, so if you "hold the bottom", it's not that hard to sing along while you play. But Geddy is a different animal! He is constantly pushing the melody and counter-melodies (Verse of "Carnies" for example), and rhythmically he is dotting and dashing all over the place. For those of you who are non-musicians... I can tell you... this is just verging on super-human. I read an article a long time ago (back when "Presto" came out) when the journalist asked Geddy about this very thing... How does he do it??? Geddy responded that he has to learn how to sing it, just like playing it...after certain notes he plays (on bass), he knows he must interject the vocal note in-between the bass-note so that he keeps the groove of the song... and learn the whole "puzzle" note-for-note (bass/vocal) I completely understood what he meant. So, here is some love for "Dirk"... my top 10 INSANE Geddy Bass-lines...How Does he Sing to that??? 1) Circumstances 2) Digital Man 3) The Analog Kid 4) Marathon 5) Territories 6) The Spirit of Radio 7) Anthem 8) Hemispheres Cygnus X-1 Book II (lots of counter-melodies and rhythm in this beast) 9) Distant Early Warning 10) Clockwork Angels What are yours? Ceiling Unlimited is flat out ripping it a new one. In fact, Vapor Trails is very much Geddy's experimental album. He's a different bass player on that record. Big Money? Where's that one? Try playing that and singing at the same time. To me, it's his best showcase song of the entire catalog You are absolutely right... Big Money is SICK... I almost added that one, but the only reason I didn't is, that the rhythm repeats and doesn't evolve as much as ...let's say Digital Man or Analog Kid... but because it's such a rhythm puzzle it could make any list for complexity... I just felt that both Marathon and Territories have the same "challenge" and are a bit tougher to nail as far as the doubles and triplets vs. singing it.... but...yeah... Big Money is super-sick...one of my fave bass lines (especially in the solo section). *- wanted to also clarify that the "counter melody" in "Carnies" I was talking about is actually from the "C" change: ..."How I prayed just to get away..." That is a really cool counter-melody/harmony bassline doing something totally different from Alex (like a majority of the Hemispheres: Cygnus Book II bass line)

  14. I'm only 1/4 through the book... and it seems ok so far...but honestly, each time I read old lyrics "cleverly" forced in (this includes song titles as well as random lyrics)... I know I'm supposed to smile...but instead I just find myself groaning... it's like Dr. Evil having to explain his homonym... "I like to see girls of that...caliber. By caliber, of course, I mean both the size of their gun barrels and the high quality of their character. It's 2 meanings. Caliber--it's a homonym. Forget it." I know it's supposed to be cool...but it's sadly ...not. I almost feel like it's "slug-bug"...like every time I read a Rush lyric, I should punch someone in the arm... (or get punched)...gah I just have a bad feeling this is gonna keep on going through the entire book...
  15. Regardless of any of this...how many more times will we get to see these guys? In 10 years Neil will be 70. Maybe two more tours? Certainly he is a gentleman who will cherish the solitude and family- basking of a proper retirement (not to mention the brutal physicality of his drumming...hey, those knees ain't gonna last forever)... Just enjoy the show and be happy that these legends are gracing us at all... and yes, CA RULES and we are LUCKY to witness it!!!! (but Jacob's Ladder would have been nice...lol... maybe next time, huh?)
  16. And the tracks covered by Rush on the 80's flavored "Feedback II" are... 1) Tarzan Boy (Baltimora) 2) Hey Micky (Toni Basil) 3) One Night In Bangkok (Murray Head) 4) What Have I Done To Deserve This? (Pet Shop Boys) 5) Girls Just Want to Have Fun (Cyndi Lauper) 6) Wake Me Up Before You Go Go/Jitterbug (Wham!) 7) Whip It! (Devo) 8) Walk Like an Egyptian (The Bangles) 9) Centerfold (The J. Geils Band) 10) Physical (Olivia Newton-John) 11) Karma Chameleon (Culture Club) 12) Maniac (Michael Sembello) I for one CAN'T WAIT!!!! If you have heard conflicting information, perhaps you should list the tracks that YOU heard made it onto the 80's inspired "Feedback II"!
  17. I just hope the Rap interlude of Jacob's Ladder also begins with "Jack, Relax"!!! One can dream...
  18. QUOTE (Tombstone Mountain @ Sep 7 2012, 01:01 PM) QUOTE (Lerxster @ Sep 7 2012, 08:13 AM) goober is not good at predicting the future. you may not have been here when he started 8 threads about how worried he was CA would suck. Are you kidding me? that's why I joined the forum. Go and read them for yourself...my firsts posts, however embarrassing as they are now, involved the Goobs. Now,we're involved in a bromance of sorts... Here's the post: RushGoober: My skepticism about CA, despite the stellar pre-release industry reviews, is growing. The problem is, I'm just not digging the first three songs. HF is definitely better than the first two, but even that I'm finding a chore to listen to. If it wasn't for having heard one-quarter of the songs already, and not getting into them, I would be excited. I thought S&A was a very good album, and I liked or loved more than half the songs. With CA, IMHO we're not off to a good start. My first Post on the Forum: after reading rushgoobers comments on the tracks not cutting it, or being sub par for his tastes. Back away from the crack pipe and get the help you need from a intervention of some kind. This album already is one of the best "sounding" efforts they have made---ever!!! How can you dread this newest offering when it obviously kicks so much ass??? IMO Rush sounds fresh and energized thanks to the production team they chose and the strategy to get the best playing they could muster. Rush has finally come full circle!!! RushGoober get a clue and crawl out of the darkness. You sound pretentious...and ultimately---childish Sorry Gooobs, I let my emotions get the best of me--you still love me right? What the heck does this have to do with Hugh Syme???
  19. I feel that Hugh is part of the band. The band has changed producers to change with their musical needs/desires, but I feel Hugh has enough chameleon-like ability (like Lerxst!!!) to keep his job secure. In fact, after watching "Beyond The Lighted Stage"... one of the things that made me an even bigger Rush fan (if that's possible) is the fact that they are so loyal to their people. Ray, Howard, Andrew (RIP), Hugh... just to name a few. In a "what have you done for me lately" world... I find it refreshing and touching that my musical heroes are also loyal to their people. It is a noble gesture... so, I say keep Hugh around.
  20. QUOTE (Animate @ Sep 7 2012, 08:44 AM)OOO- great thread! In addition to the classics already mentioned, there are a few less appreciated solos that I love. One of my all time favorite solos is the one from In the End In the End Solo Will add more later!! Have to work I agree... I almost put that up there, it certainly is a classic! And while I'm at it, here is my next tier of Alex Solos! (11-20) 11) Chemistry 12) Clockwork Angels 13) The Trees 14) Cygnus Hemispheres (first solo) 15) The Spirit of Radio 16) The Weapon 17) Armor & Sword 18) The Analog Kid 19) Red Barchetta 20) In The End It's awesome that you really can keep going w/o compromising interesting/nifty solo work by Alex!
  21. I think it's funny that many are worried from this spoiler info that this RUSH show will be mellow because they are mellowing in their older age...LOL... Um... let's see...Far Cry, Caravan, Headlong Flight, The Anarchist, Carnies, 7 Cities, BU2B, Clockwork Angles... pretty sure those will be in the show, along w/ obvious barn burners like Freewill, TSOR, etc. Mellow??? Uh..no.
  22. I am sure this has been done many times, but let's give Alex some love and talk Lerxst Epicness! My TOP 10 ALEX LIFESON SOLOS: 1) Xanadu (Exit Stage Left) 2) Freewill 3) The Camera Eye 4) Natural Science (first solo) 5) La Villa Strangiato 6) Digital man 7) Headlong Flight 8) Red Sector A (great composition/solo) 9) The Big Money 10) Limelight Honorable mentions: The Garden, Armor & Sword (needs to be brought up in the mix!!!), The Weapon, Red Barchetta, The Trees, Chemistry, The Spirit of Radio,... heck, this could keep on going!
  23. Best Album since Moving Pictures. The last album I dug every song was GUP... although both that album and Signals had tracks that weren't upper echelon to me: (Countdown, New World Man, Red Lenses, The Enemy Within, etc.) My top 5 Rush albums previously being: Hem, PeW, MP, FWTK, Signals... After CA it now goes: 1) Hemispheres 2) Permanent Waves 3) Moving Pictures 4) Farewell to Kings 5) Clockwork Angels And that is saying a LOT for this latest effort. I can't stop playing the damn thing (driving my wife crazy)... I promised her after our November 30th concert (in San Antonio, TX)... I'll give it a rest. I'd put "Headlong Flight" up against any song in their catalog for pure "Rush" virtuosity (all three shine like Novas here). Not a stinker on the album (well, I don't really count BU2B2 as a "song", but as an interlude withing the story). Just my opinion.
  24. QUOTE (ReflectedLight @ Jul 23 2012, 01:46 PM)i wish they wouldn't add any strings outside of the ca stuff but if alex said that an older tune will be accompanied by strings, i'm betting that it's going to jacobs ladder. I believe the intention is to have several older songs accompanied w/ strings... this is from the article I read: "Our intention is to take strings out on the road," guitarist Alex Lifeson tells Billboard.com. Orchestrations, arranged by David Campbell, feature on several of "Clockwork Angels' " tracks, and Lifeson says Rush will employ a small string ensemble, likely eight to 10 pieces, to recreate those pieces and to be added to some of Rush's older material. "It's just something different for us, and I can't wait to hear what it sounds like."
