I've really been into this band lately, so I'm glad I may get a chance to see them live.

An incredible live band—my personal favorite. The Marc Ford years (1992-1997, 2005-2006) were their best, but they are still a great band. Definitely worth seeing live. The two CRB albums released last year are in my opinion stellar, though I readily admit they are not for everyone.

Have you been exploring their whole catalog? Sorry for the prodding enthusiasm; I'm just excited to hear that someone else is on a BC kick, and I'm starved for substantive discussion about the group.

I actually prefer the Luther Dickenson era (when it comes to live performances). I just love his playing. Of course Marc Ford was awesome as well.

I haven't heard the CRB albums. I have heard a few of the tunes though.

But I did want to chime in and give support for the last two Crowes albums. Warpaint was the first 'new' album that I had listened to in years in which I was blown away at first listen. Clockwork Angels came close. Other than CA, Warpaint is probably the one album I have listened to the most in the past year. Before The Frost/After the Freeze is really good too.

I will most likely be at one of the DC 9:30 Club shows. Both are work nights, but I'm only about 2 hours away. The Friday night Philly show might be a posibility as well.

I am kinda bummed that Luther is out. I have seen Jackie Greene live 4-5 time in various bands. He has a good vibe to him and great stage presence. Not sure how well he will do in the lead guitar slot. Then again, I have seen him with bands with outstanding lead players and he was more of a rhythm player.

Anyways, I can't wait.

Whoa, hold on guise. I have Shake Your Money Maker, Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, and By Your Side. I don't all this stuff about eras and all that other jazz. And what the heck are CRB albums?

You need to drop everything you are doing and sit down with a copy of Amorica and a pair of headphones! CRB can wait... :smoke: :guitar: B)

Agreed. I don't know what the hell is with Wiser Time. It is a fairly simple song, but it is so powerful and I can't count the number of times that I simply couldn't get the tune out of my head.

CRB is the Chris Robinson Brotherhood - meaning Chris' band since the Crowes went on their hiatus. More folky and 'hippy' than the Crowes.

Good call! Wiser Time is probably the first song I would suggest in an effort to turn someone on to the Black Crowes. They've played it to death since 2006, but it's still brilliant after all these years.

Even better if you listen to Ballad in Urgency and Wiser together; they sort of form a suite.

All the times I held Amorica in my hands at the rekkid store, and never bought it...

Maybe the 'suggestive' cover turned you away. I only got the album about 5 years ago. I didn't really become a fan (always liked them though) until Warpaint came out.

You know, you're right about the cover. But I always thought it was a guy's crotch. Had I known it was a woman, I would have had it since the day it came out.

I am a huge fan of these guys.

1) Amorica

2) Southern Harmony

3) Lions

Those are my top three records from these guys. They have had so many up's and downs.

Glad to see they are back and I will catch them live. I have seen them over a dozen times and only once did I really feel let down (right before they recorded War Paint I walked out on them as they were god awful....could not believe my ears).

I think I have seen them live 8 times (I think). 6 incredible shows. 1 so-so show. 1 'who the &$!@ is this band on stage impersonating the Crowes' show.

The bad show was June 27, 1997.

I saw them on the High as the Moon tour down here during the 90s. Loved them back then.

That tour was stellar! As was the "Amorica or Bust" tour in support of the next record. Anyone who wrote the Crowes off as a half-baked Stones/Faces impersonation were not paying attention past their Shake Your Moneymaker debut. The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion and Amorica are two of the finest rock and roll albums ever put to tape. And Three Snakes and One Charm, Band, and Tall are almost equally brilliant. And I agree with "apetersvt" that Warpaint is a fine album as well.

I'm so happy to find some other fans on this board. I always assumed I would get flamed here for my love of all things BC!

One of my top 10 bands of all time. Amazing southern rock. Great guitar playing.

Anyone who has not heard Live at the Greek with Jimmy Page....dear lord. Amazing performance.

Ten Years Gone and In My Time of Dying.

That is all.

Thanks for sharing. Sounds a little better than the low-grade version of Under a Mountain that they offered during the initial new live album announcement. I'm pretty stoked for the tour. I definitely plan to hit Austin and Dallas, and maybe the Tulsa casino date, although part of me doesn't want to accept that they are hitting the casino circuit. I'm a little skeptical about Jackie Greene. I like Jackie, and obviously Gorman digs him, but he's more of a singer, songwriter, and rhythm player. Can he fill the lead guitar shoes? I hope so. I know some participants in this thread will object, but I found Luther a bit unconvincing and underwhelming when he filled the role. Great player and great dude, but not the right guy for the BC, IMHO. Still, I'm optimistic. Chris, Rich, and Steve could play Nickelback covers for 45 minutes and I'd probably pay to see it. I'm a bit of a fanatic.

We are certainly in agreement wondering if Jackie is the appropriate lead guitarist. I concur with your point about being a great singer/rhythm player. Still not convinced about his songwriting yet. I have his 'Till The Light Comes' album and wasn't blown away with the songwriting portion. He does have good chops and good stage presence. When I saw Jackie with Phil And Friends in Denver in 2012 he did have some impressive solos (but there were two others taking turns with lead - Warren Haynes and John Scofield) so there wasn't much pressure.

I will disagree about Luther. I think he was the missing piece of the puzzle. I enjoyed the shows with Luther more than any that I saw with Marc. I will certainly miss him. Luther was a little more hippy-jam style than the balsy rocking of Marc. I love both, but I have always been a jam-band hippie type person.

Fair enough, and well stated. Ford is my favorite lead guitarist of all time; that's him in my profile picture, of course. I like Luther on the more recent material, to be sure. But I found him entirely lacking on classic cuts like Sometimes Salvation and My Morning Song. Speaking of the Sometimes Salvation solo, your guy Warren Hayes has done it justice on more than one occasion, as I'm sure you are aware.

But yeah, Jackie... I'm skeptical, but I'll give him a chance. Of all the guitarists who have tried to fill Marc's shoes I was actually most impressed by Paul Stacey. Given more time to learn the material I think he would have worked well. But as I understand it he didn't want to commit to heavy touring. In my opinion the band just hasn't been the same in Marc and Ed's absence. They just don't scale the same heights as they once did. That said, they are still better than 99% of the acts out there today, and I'm still an enthusiastic supporter. Looking forward to the upcoming tour!

I made it up to NYC for the Another One For Woody show and Rich joined them for Sometime Salvation:

.

Speaking of Marc Ford, I did catch his band Federale in a somewhat small club circa '98. They were opening for Gov't Mule. He looked like he was having so much fun on stage. He has always put on a great show (other than that one Crowes show I saw that sucked). Marc later joined Mule for the encore of 'Can't You See'. The guitar play between the two (Marc and Warren) was out of this world. I think my jaw was dropped for a couple of days just from that one song.

-Just looked it up. It was 4/28/99. I believe you should be able to listen to it on this link (not the best recording) http://www.archive.org/serve/GovernmentMule1999-04-28AlleyKatzRichmondVA/GovernmentMule1999-04-28AlleyKatzRichmondVA.html

Starts around the 1:50:00 mark.

Very cool! Thank you for sharing. This was not on my radar at all. I will definitely check it out! While on the topic, have you heard Gov't Mule and Marc Ford's rendition of Cortez the Killer? It's a knockout!

Also cool that you saw Federale! I like the album that they cut, which never saw the light of day accept among traders. Thanks for keeping this thread alive. Most folks I know only associate the Crowes with Shake Your Money Maker, and are completely oblivious to just how creative and remarkable they became over time. A great underappreciated and fairly misunderstood American rock band!
