For all you nature lovers, here's a link to a peregrine falcon cam, which is set up on the roof of where I work. We've had falcons nesting here for 3 out of the last 4 years. This year, we have FIVE hatchlings, which is a new record.

Awesome birds! new_thumbsupsmileyanim.gif new_thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

The nesting box was built and placed on the roof of a grain elevator about ten years ago, but falcons didn't nest there until three years ago. Marvelous birds....they can dive to speeds of over 200 mph to catch their prey. Fastest animals on Earth.

The only trouble is the bloody carnage they let drop all over the sidewalks from their nest. We get to clean up the carcasses.....oh joy..... new_thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif new_thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

The babies are getting BIG! ohmy.gif Five peregrine falcon chicks, and they're ALWAYS HUNGRY..... biggrin.gif They get a regular smorgasbord.....mice, pigeons, sparrows, even a blue jay (yesterday). We suspect that they enjoyed some good rabbit, too.....(we found a rabbit ear)..... laugh.gif laugh.gif The mother feeds then at dawn and dusk...and several times inbetween, of course.....

Love it!

We've had a similar thing going for years on one of the downtown Seattle buildings. They're very popular smile.gif

I don't think we can call 'em "babies" anymore.... biggrin.gif

Pretty soon, they'll be totally free of their white down and ready to try flying. Hopefully, they'll be ready when Mother kicks 'em out for good!!

Looks like the young falcons are all but gone now. sad.gif sad.gif Only a couple are staying in the coop (what a MESS they've made!), with the others hanging outside the building.

At least one has prematurely taken off and landed across the street, and isn't quite strong enough to get up in the air. We try to grab them and get them up on a roof to give them a chance....

In just five weeks, the peregrine falcon chicks went from tiny, white-downed creatures to majestic, ebony-feathered raptors. What an amazing bird...fastest animal on Earth.....their prey has little chance of escape!!

We wish this group well and hope for another nesting in the spring. The falcons will go south for the winter, perhaps as far as South America, and then return to this very coop in Minnesota.....AMAZING.
