Hey gang! Take a few minutes and check out this video of Stewie's drum kit.

Did Stewart really reintroduce the splash cymbal back into late Seventies rock?

I would say that Neil did it first. Now I have no proof but couldn't one think that Stewart wanted to put splashes on his kit too just like Neil?

Did you know that Stewart was backstage somewhere and Neil was there.

Stewart went up to meet him and Neil turned his back to him.

Technically Copeland is a better drummer than Neil, but Ill always say Neil is better because I have to look at the whole package, and Neil also writes lyrics.

I'm curious when this, "Neil is not a technical drummer" vibe started. I think he's plenty technical. He's just BIG. I think he appears a bit lumbering and imprecise but I think looks can be deceiving, especially if you look at his complete body of work. Signals-T4E is has some pretty technical stuff, doesn't it?

Anyway, I'm a Neil guy until the day I die. He helped shaped the way I look at music and, at least when I was younger, the way I looked at the world. We are truly blessed to have him still pounding.

When artists and athletes are so friggin good that they defy criticism it makes people dig deeper to find flaws. Eddie Van Halen in the 80's and 90's was treated at times like a third rate hack when all he did was reinvent the electric guitar for an entire generation. Don't fall into the same trap with Neil. He is one of the greatest rock drummers of all time (Number 2 on my list).

I would like to add that SC has that amazing ability to make you want more. NP used to give us everything he had at the time. Sorry if that doesn't make sense, but really, they are both great drummers...

Could we compare Neil to others now like Bill Bruford, Phil (under rated) Collins or Alan White.

Comparisons could become endless.

You mean his post-Copeland influence body of work? Yes, it is much more technical than his work prior.

Of course, a lot of the late 70's/early 80's music had a big influence on all three of the boys, which they freely admit. The influence of U2, the Police and Talking Heads, among other, can really be heard on Signals through HYF.

Well said! I guess it really isn't who is better as they are both great.

The point I am going to try and make right now with video footage is that Stewart is not an apple and Neil is not an orange.

Both drummers are similar in some ways.

I love that Stewart is still doing the organic percussion, whereas Neil is obsessed with all of that electronic drum pad/fake cymbal shit as well. JMO

Check out Stewart:

You all know how Neil plays.

Both drummers use traditional grip too, although I have noticed that Neil has gone back to matchstick grip...........

"apples to oranges."

did you hear about this? cool10.gif danny = danny carey

.. recently DANNY got together for a drumming/recording session with NEIL PEART (RUSH) and STEWART COPELAND (THE POLICE). LES CLAYPOOL was also involved, but I'm not sure as to what capacity. Whether or not these guys will get together again, or anything will come from the initial 'session', I really don't know. ...

Not only did he reintroduce it, he used it to DEATH! Watch the Synco Live vid. Holy crap, it's really distracting.

Well, you're obviously going to get more votes for Neil on a Rush site. I know the professor admires Stewart's work, don't know if the opposite is true. I would say Stewart has the edge from a uniqueness point of view and Neil has more chops. Hard to say who's "better". They're both awesome. Could I be convinced that Neil is better? - yes. Could I be convinced that Stewart is better - probably not.

I vote Neil.

What do you Rush fans think?  I bet the majority of you are biased.
