realomind
QUOTE (NobodysHeroine @ Mar 1 2011, 10:31 PM) I don't really mind the handlebar mustache. But it does remind me of a scene from That 70s Show. Kelso: Well, I like the mustache. It makes me look like an authority figure. Hyde: It makes you look like a porn star. Bow chicka wow wow.... evilsugar25
@Realomind: my lust definitely evolved over time. when i first discovered them (on a 2112-era poster inside someone else's locker), i was 11, and kind of tantalized by the robes and hair... but then the 80s hit and i did NOT find any of those looks attractive. so i spent most of the 80s thinking they looked better in the 70s, but not really thinking any of them were particularly attractive. however, as i got older (and they got older) we both matured... and honestly i fell in love with neil's brain way before that translated into lust. but now... mmmm mmmm, what a cutie. i also think al and ged are quite adorable and lust-worthy as well, but neil is my man. and your man. realomind
Yeah there's enough Bubba for the both of us! First and foremost it's the music for me, I respect all 3 of them as musicians and the fact they all seem like really decent guys is a bonus. As you say, with Neil it's a combination of things; first class musician and lyricist, intellect, humility and it helps of course that he's also tall and damn fine lookin'! As you say, with Neil it's a combination of things; first class musician and lyricist, intellect, humility and it helps of course that he's also tall and damn fine lookin'! I agree with.. uh.. pretty much everything in the above post. Sometimes people will ask me why I love Neil so much (since I talk about him all the freaking time at school and such; seriously it's insane) and I never know what to say. It's often something like "Well, he's a fantastic writer, a brilliant lyricist, an AMAZING percussionist, and he rides a motorcycle. A freaking motorcycle! And he looks really good in leather!!" (cue giggling) After such a crappy day at the state tourney (girls B-Ball) this thread made me smile. Agreed that Neil needs more love 'round here. I wish I were more active in this thread but I never know what to say! (Mainly because I'm usually speechless when I just think about him. It's often just a lot of grinning and gaping into space.) I have appreciation for The Professor, myself, though I am a steadfast Geddy girl. His great intelligence draws me to him more than anything else; intelligence is very attractive to me. Neil has plenty of it. Of course, as he is a drummer, Neil's physical self is attractive, too. Like you mentioned, he's tall and damn fine lookin'. I remember watching a part of Beyond the Lighted Stage when he talked about his first Rush audition back in 1974. He said, "I had two eighteen-inch bass drums set up really high. Kinda weird-looking...and I was kinda weird-looking." I was like, "Oh, c'mon, Neil. You know that's not true." All you have to do is look at the first picture that HowItIs posted and you'll know why. I agree: those muscles! I once said to a pal of mine, "Now Neil is tempting me. All three Rush guys are. I'm being tempted on all sides." That just sounded wrong. On all sides. HowItIs
My appreciation for Neil is mostly on the intellectual side.... or at least it was until I joined this forum and saw some pictures that really made my jaw drop. This one in particular made me gasp when I saw it: http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd103/laserspray/np-hyf-tour.jpg I've always loved drummer-muscles. My ex-room mate played and I got to watch him up close quite often. His idols were Phil Collins and Neil. That's how I came to learn that Pratt is a drum god. The more I listened to Rush and heard the lyrics, the more I appreciated the man who wrote them. Recently, I discovered his books - Ghost Rider was recommended to me - and his website. My appreciation for him has grown and I hold a great affection for him because of GR and how it helped me. But, now and then, I see a picture that reminds me that he's a drummer and has that drummer physique that I love so much. Physically and intellectually he is a wonderful person. evilsugar25
QUOTE (HowItIs @ Mar 4 2011, 07:07 PM) Recently, I discovered his books - Ghost Rider was recommended to me - and his website. My appreciation for him has grown and I hold a great affection for him because of GR and how it helped me. yes, GR is the first book Neil book I read, but now I have read all of them. GR was such tough, emotional material, I have to STRONGLY recommend the other books as well: Roadshow, but most especially TravellingMusic. the "travelling music" parts of the book aside, he weaves in chapters that are essentially an autobiography, talking about his childhood... and my FAVORITE: his time in London before he returned to Canada to join Rush. with this lighter material, his sense of humor and personality really shine through, and there are times in both of those books (and Masked Rider too, though not as much) where i literally laughed out loud. i LOVE these books (and yes, the writings on NP.net) because it's like he's telling a story just to YOU. i love the way he strings words together, the way he weaves a detailed story... and after listening to so many interviews and DVDs, i can actually hear his voice in my head.... :swoon: i'd listen to him read the phone book to me. seriously. I loved Traveling Music. It's not "sold" as an autobiography but it really is. And you are so right -- his personality really comes out in this book. When I first started reading his stuff, I was immediately struck by his writing "voice" and how it was so present. As you say, it's like he's talking to YOU. Perhaps this is because he started off writing for such a small audience with his letters and trip diaries for friends. His style has been honed into a very personable experience. You must have left that comment on YouTube about listening to Neil read the phone book! I laughed out loud at that and had to agree. I love his voice so much -- I'm working on a documentary and I would love to ask him to narrate it. Fat chance!

CMWriter
I'd like to add to that comment about his writing (especially his books) being so personal... It really does feel like he's speaking to the reader! He has really fantastic voice in his writing and you really start to see his personality come out - whether for good or for bad. (Mostly the former, of course.) He really comes off to me as very intelligent, well-rounded, if not a little cynical at times. But that's not always a bad thing. It just means he's human, and to be honest, I appreciate how he doesn't gloss over his opinions! I have a lot of respect for a writer who can do that. Bah, and now I'm rambling. I just finally got back to reading Roadshow and I've been thinking about it all day. I've been tabbing all the things I find really neat (there are a lot of pink sticky notes poking out) but this one stuck out to me. From a journal note he added: QUOTE Thinking tonight how it bothers me that people should think ill of me. I give them everything onstage, every night, but some want - demand - more. Another unbridgeable divide. Humphrey Bogart quote: "The only thing I owe the public is a good performance. It actually saddened me a little, since it seems quite a few people do think ill of him, without even knowing him (as he mentions in the previous paragraph). Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but when it becomes a personal attack, I think that's just going too far. Fffff I cannot stay on topic. I just love his writing so much. ;w;
