I started The Masked Rider a few days ago and I'm only a few chapters in but that fantastic way he has of describing places, people and landscapes just shines through in this book so much! I could "see" everything. I actually wrote Neil a letter and, you are so right ladies, that letter scared the bejeesus out of me! It took me days to even figure out how to start it. As far as I know, it got to him (through the Anthem offices) and I'm somewhat angsty about it... BTW, I got Rhythm and Light for X-mas. It's just beautiful. Carrie has a lovely eye for composition and movement. I was very impressed. Photography kinda runs in my family - my Grandfather was a portrait photographer and my StepDad worked in the development end of things - so I always love to see it done well. The descriptions, of course, put you right there. He's so good at doing that; the landscape, the birds, the plants, the surroundings.... But I also loved the inner description of himself and others. The different ways people think, for example. He is a linear thinker, the guide is a radial thinker... I'm a parabolic thinker. There are some wonderful insights into human nature. From the sweet little girl who wished him bonjour as he rode by to the surly soldiers, the village chiefs, the nuns whose vespers so moved him. I felt as if I had met them, too. There is also a kind of treasure hunt feel to reading something that later ended up in a song; "Space is a curve and time is a spiral", "the larger bowl." And his sense of humor! At one point he was looking up at the stars; Orion and the Pleiades, waxing poetic about the vastness of the Universe and his place in it.... "And then a bug bit me." Once, along the road, a woman had said to him, "Ashea" as he rode by. He took it to be a greeting and returned it. Eventually he found out that it was an expression of sympathy. It floored him that this woman, living in such an impoverished situation, still had the humanity to offer sympathy to him because he was pedaling a bike in the heat. At one point he and his companions were chatting with a family at a countryside lunch stand. One of his companions (Leonard) was an African-American. The one member of the family who spoke English didn't understand why Leonard was American yet looked the same as they did. Soon, they realized that these people didn't know about slavery in America. Neil delicately tried to explain it to them but they didn't understand: "As the Asante family continued to stare at us, uncomprehending, I even felt a vicarious guilt, like a German meeting Jewish people in Poland who had never heard of the Holocaust, or that there were Jews in America, and trying to explain it to them. The turtleneck is flattering. I own Masked Rider, as well as Neil's other three books, but I haven't read too far into it. I'll have to read it with a fresh and open mind once more. Your review has definitely turned me on to it again. The beginning dedication really tugs at my heartstrings: "Thanks to Jackie and Selena for allowing the time." Poor Neil didn't know the tragedies that were ahead of him. Okay, let's move on from that before my Rushing hormones ruin the moment. Dammit, bug, don't bite Pratt. It's not good for business. You know what really ticks me off? Knowing that arrogant white people who colonized Africa assumed that they brought civilization there, while civilization already existed long before they ever showed up. Africa is known as "the cradle of humanity." Truly amazing human beings lived on that continent, and still do. Neil expresses that for us in this book, among other things.
