Why do some people get really drunk at concerts?

Recommended Posts

At the T4E show I attended, my then BF and I were with another couple. Well, the female half was a story unto herself (which I've told before) - she didn't want to be there, bitched and moaned the whole time. . .

The guy, who was an Olympic-class dickhead anyway, was absolutely hell-bent on getting stoned beforehand. Only he didn't have enough weed to get the job done. So he held us all up in the parking lot trying to score some. eyesre4.gif I finally wrestled my ticket from my BF and went on in - damned if I was going to let Stoner McLoser make me miss part of the show.

He never did get any extra grass. As far as he was concerned, the entire night was RUINED for him. Never mind that he was actually a pretty solid Rush fan. He couldn't get baked for the show, so therefore the concert sucked. Yeah, buddy, I can see where that'd wreck the experience. Meantime you and your whiny bitch did your best to wreck MY Rush night, until I made my BF change seats with me. (Hey, it was his idea that we all go together).

Wow! What a story. If there's any consolation, it sounds like they were the perfect couple - a whiny princess with a badboy stoner.

How well did you know this "other" guy though? I think the problem there is that this guy (being a solid Rush fan like you claim) typically listens to them while endulging, and feels he needs to do the same thing if he's actually going to see a live performance of them. If that's the case, I can see where he's coming from, but I wouldn't let it interfere with my enjoyment and involvement with the show.

So, was your Rush night salvaged or redemmed at all? Did you end up having somewhat of a good time?

Oh, it was a Rush show! Of course it was great. biggrin.gif

I knew the guy well enough (since college) to know I really didn't want him and his girlfriend to go with us. He's one of THOSE New Yorkers - the Hollywood archetype X 10. Loud, obnoxious, always has to have the last word and always has to be right. Girlfriend was just generally a whingy pain in the ass anyway; the fact that she was at a Rush concert and didn't want to be there just gave her an excuse to amp up the sniveling. My BF and I actually had a pretty big fight about it - I lost, because BF was paying for the tickets.

Even BF agreed afterwards that sitting with those two had been a bad idea.

Postscript: I still exchange e-mails with this ex-BF from time to time. Stoner McLoser and Ms. WhinyPants did end up getting married and popping out a couple of spratlets. McLoser then had a series of affairs and she took his ass to the cleaners in the divorce.

I think people tend to get drunk at concerts because there adrenalin is flowing and there pumped up for the band there seeing. It starts off sometimes innocently with a few beers and at some point it gets away from you.

of coarse I can't speak from experience. atickhum.gif

Thoughtful post and I agree with you...but be prepared for some negative responses from those who've GOT to have their booze, weed, or whatever at the show.

My enjoyment of the last show I saw (New Orleans in '08) was curtailed a bit by the clowns blowing their dope smoke in my direction through most of the show. Worse yet, they weren't really fans...just posers there to see some live rock and smoke dope. Whatever.

I live 25 miles from a major university (which I attended), but quit going to football games years ago because I wanted to--imagine this--watch the football game, rather than fight with drunken idiots.

wwwwoooooooow, wasnt the N'Oleans show the best?! i was moved incredibly by Hope that night.

I can recall seeing a triple-bill of Dokken, Whitesnake and The Scorpions. There was a burn-out couple sitting in front of my group who were completely stoned out of their minds and they continued to toke during the entire Dokken set. (Not The Scorpions, not Whitesnake, but those venerable gods of rock, Dokken!!! schla03.gif )

After Dokken's set finished, the girl puked her guts out and was politely escorted, along with her dirtbag male companion, out of the arena.

I've never laughed so hard in my life!

It's like me getting to see Cliff Burton play with Metallica. (dare I dream) Good luck doing that now in today's day and age, since it will probably never happen again.

Just probably not? tongue.gif

I'd say Cliff showing up would be a pretty big draw.

OHH!!!! I see what you mean here. Sorry, I wasn't very clear with my post. I was referring to David Lee Roth as the "probably not", but I wasn't clear about that. Instead, it sorta seemed like I tied it in with Cliff tongue.gif

Yeah, with Cliff, there is no "probably not" laugh.gif

Well...

unless you get really wasted at the show, then you might see Cliff play.

I saw Cliff play.................. biggrin.gif

It really was a fantastic show...maybe the best I've ever seen. (it would be right there with the R30 opener in Nashville...3rd row! Red Barchetta! Xanadu! Whoo-hoo!) The "hey's!" during 2112 were the loudest and most enthusiastic I'd ever seen. Maybe it had something to do with the band not having played in Nola in such a long time.

And even with the annoying weed smoke, it was such a great show that that would've only knocked it down to maybe a 99.90%

I've had it happen a few times to me, but NEVER at a Rush concert. I guess you could say that's because our fan base knows better smile.gif

The worst for me was seeing The Police in Melbourne... there were these four baby boomers in front of me who got absolutely sh-tfaced on expensive wine and kept doing this swaying motion back and forth, spilling their wine all over the place and occasionally throwing it in our direction.

The worst was Roxanne... predictably that song got the biggest reaction from everyone, to the point where they kept singing "Roxanne.....Roxanne" in the choruses to the next 10 songs afterwards. Eventually one guy behind me got fed up and yelled "Roxanne was 10 songs ago, you dumbf-cks". At that point there was an argument and security tossed a couple of them out.

Still have yet to see anything like this at a Rush concert. I'm bringing my wife to the next one, so everyone there better be good >:)

The closest thing I can recall taht relates to something like this, was at the very same Rush concert I first attended (the one that casued me to post this thread to begin with) when a group of younger teens behind me would yell out "YYZ!!!!!" over and over again at ranomd intervals throughout the entire show, ever since the very beginning, until finally, it was played at the encore. They went nuts tongue.gif
