theredtamasrule
Make A Jazz Noise Here. Great live album with, as expected, wonderful musicians playing crazy complex songs with nary a flaw. The Black Napkins/Big Swifty/King Kong group of tunes on disc 1 are awesome. Disc 2 from the start of The Black Page (new age version) through Sinister Footwear, 2nd movement is simply fantastic. Zoot Allures Really understated album for Zappa, not a lot of instrumentation/ornate compositions but pretty much guitar, bass & drums, plus some marimba. Terry Bozzio plays great as usual and Frank has some killer guitar work...and there's "Wino Man", what more do you want.
rushgoober
I've heard (and own) many, many Zappa/Mothers albums, and many of them are great albums, but so far none of them QUITE reach the brilliance of the debut: The Mothers of Invention - Freak Out! (1966) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/79/FreakOut%21.jpg Half of it is 50's music turned on its ear with demented lyrics, and other half is pure psychedelic weirdness, folk and even a brilliant and brave commentary on racism. Also, it's one of the earliest ever concept albums, even if the concept isn't as cohesive as later concept albums. You pick something, listen and decide if it's for you. May as well jump in with both feet and get Joe's Garage: two discs of commentary, incredible music, humor and song's with titles such as "Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?". A classic lineup of musicians on that album too, with Vinnie Colaiuta doing some really great drumming.
The Owl
Zappa is one of the artists/bands I would actually recommend a compilation, 2 different ones in fact The first being: Strictly Commercial which is a basic hit's compilation that can get you familiar with some of Zappa's best work. The second thing would be a compilation called: "Have I offended anyone?" Which is a compilation of his better known songs that would never get any radio airtime, while being offensive, and ever hilarious, is one of the best compilation records I have. As far as full albums go there is alot to choose from....... Broadway the Hardway, Tinseltown Rebellion, Sheik Yerbouti, Hot Rats, Zoot Allurs, The Man from Utopia.........are all great albums. Zappa has a tendency towards bathroom humor on some albums, and Joe's Garage is one of the more extreme offenders. I find the bathroom humor stuff hard to take personally, though some people enjoy it. I would recommend Apostrophe - funny, but not so over the top, and musically it's excellent. Or try Freak Out! or Hot Rats, or even Uncle Meat. Edited March 22, 2010 by rushgoober

Rush!
Huge Zappa nut here. I pretty much enjoy everything I've heard from him so far. I recommend starting at the beginning with Zappa, and just start with Freak Out!.

Mr. Krinkle
Just think for a minute about the talent level of the drummers that were in Zappa's band. Bozzio Colaiuta Wackerman Absolutly, unbeliveable talent. If you weren't that good, you had no chance in FZ's band. raygun47
Just stopped in to give a shout out to Frank Zappa. Glad to see a thread of dedication. I probably couldn't choose an album as a favorite. Too many...and they've all worked at different times for me. Did want to mention "Trance-Fusion." Sort of a more recent release that I'm fond of at the moment. I'll be back in the future to talk some Zappa.

Rush!
So what are everyone's favorite Zappa records? If I had to do a top 5, it'd consist of: 1. Hot Rats 2. Overnite Sensation 3. Lumpy Gravy 4. Waka/Jawaka 5. Weasels Ripped My Flesh I'm kind of partial to the first incarnation of the Mothers of Invention from '66-'69. Most live material from that time period is excellent as well. Also agree with Your_Lion about the Baby Snakes DVD. Zappa's band for those shows were on fire and such fantastic musicians. I also saw ZPZ last summer in Asbury Park... what a phenomenal show. The musicians were just as skilled as the members from the original bands.
