Snowdog
WinPatrol is a freeware program that does a great job of monitoring the processes running in the background. I know Task Manager does that, but I often end up wondering what "cdxtre.exe" is and WinPatrol has an "info" button that will tell you the author and purpose of almost any of these files so you can easily and safely disable anything that's hogging it up in the background. Been using it for about a week and I won't be without it now!

Let The Fray Begin
Winamp and Windows Media Player, i use them both depending on what the situation calls for. AVG Virus Guard, a very good virus program that comes out of Europe (The guy who designed it was a comedian too, when you scan for viruses the window that pops up is called Luke Filewalker ) And ZoneAlarm is great for internet surfing, but I turn it off when I play online games.
