LABT's Rush song rankings (1-165), with special dispensation from hi_water to reveal them concurrent with his list

I also took statistics in university, on the recommendation of my Anthro department. Loved the class, and did very well, but don't remember much. 

I love general statistics, in my spare time I create the full demographic break downs of the citizens of the nations and cities I invent for my realms. Full nerd mode, and I love it. So I really want to see a professional break down of this forum's opinions.

The problem is that you want to begin with an equivalency between (for example) 70th is to 110th as 2nd is to X.

I can answer that for myself, because I know for myself how close the former two are vs the latter two. But that really won't hold for many people. Some hate entire albums, or even half the catalog. 

But I agree that it makes no sense to give every rating where 1st gets 165 points and 2nd gets 164, that's ridiculous. 
And for me the difference between #100 and #70 is almost nothing compare to #30 vs #1. Or #165 vs #135.

So I can't help you with your formula, but perhaps you can give a first place entry a value, another for 2nd-5th, another for 6th-10th, another for 11th-20... Something like that?

I'm so far out of my depth now!

In any event, how many people can we get to give you complete ratings? You'll get a lot more top 40s than top 165s.

Yep, that's what I'm getting at (a number would be helpful, then I could take the consensus.  Short of that, I may just use a combination of a modified kenpom ranking (for college basketball) and apply winning percentage formulas to get spreads.  And then find out that that gives me a bunch of nonsense.  But you never know till you try.

2). The song opens with the Morse code signal for YYZ being played by the band

Oh, and the instrumentation and playing is top notch (any help I could get with alternatives to sublime would be appreciated).  But you already knew that.

It really is brilliant.  It's perfectly constructed, and it shows their chops without being overwrought.  I've heard iot so many times that I don't seek it out, but rather than being a shortcoming, it speaks to its greatness

Rush could always write a great song in under 4 minutes and this is one of the first proofs of that.   I think I probably have it higher than most but I just love the tune from the interlude to the chorus to the part before the chorus that I'm sure has a term for it but which I don't know. .   And as Sebastian Bach once said "these dudes are singing in French"   (the incredulity in his voice is not captured fully in print, unfortunately).    Just a transcendently beautiful (though less complex than most, from what I can tell) song.

I don't have that song ranked quite that high, but it's not far behind this. It's a solid tune and not surprised to see it in someone's top-10.

I had it at 28th, and it definitely deserves to be highly ranked. 

It passed the Trees for me long ago, and it might pass La Villa at times, though not often. 

It's never passing the title track, but that's no knock.

Very good song.  Clearly in the top 100.  Where?  Not the top 15 .  Likely not top 20.  Top 50?  reasonable guess although it could be lower.  Put another way, not really certain.  But very good.

I love this song! No. 8 may be a reach, but it is a nice, tight burst of a hard rock song, and just the punch one needs after finally crossing the River "Hemispheres."

As one era ended with the last song on the countdown, a new, more accessible one began with the first song from their last Seventies album (sorry, had to), which appears at #6.   Not wishing to sacrifice musicianship at the altar of accessibility, they meet the standards of both with a song whose lyrics manage to be acerbic while sung joyfully while capturing the transition of FM radio from creative to corporate (though this had pretty much happened a few years prior.)  Always a joy to listen to, even with vicals best described as what will be looked at five years from now as a primitive AI mashup of Geddy and Phil Collins that just sounds like Geddy at half power.

A nice topical review of a song that was specifically topical. 

The truths in Spirit are still true, one does like to believe in the freedom of music. 
But that damnation o fthe industry is even more true today. 

Can't stop creativity, it's still all around, but it sure can be shoved into less accessible corners. 

I wish I hadn't loved this song and Tom Sawyer so much and that they hadn't been everywhere when I was young. because they dropped in the rankings because of this.

If I do another list I'll change my criteria. I'll drop the "current mood" criteria, and change it to an overall impact on my perception giving equal weight to my past as well as present. Spirit, Tom, Fly, Closer, Trees, etc., would all be higher. Radio wasn't friendly to my list this time, Freewill and Limelight notwithstanding.

To be honest, I'd kind of forgotten about/lost track of this one. I think that tells me I wouldn't have it in the top grouping. I'm not sure why, really, maybe it just suffers by comparison, and I loved it as a show opener, but it might be my least favorite track from PeW? I think, maybe, just possibly, a little bit, perhaps, it's . . . sort of boring? (Rush "boring," anyway).

Imagine having a song on the radio that has multiple time signature and meter changes, all played with advanced skill, and having it become as popular and iconic as some straight-ahead rock songs. This song and Tom Sawyer did just that, and that might be Rush's greatest accomplishment.

 

The other good example of that is Carry On Wayward Son. Not as many time sig changes but lots of meter and feel changes.

Once upon a time this was a top 10 song for me. Not any more.  Not a top 20.  Not a top 25.  Top 50?  Likely no.  Top 75?  Likely.  Just has not aged well and I have come to appreciate many of Rush's other songs a lot more.  Still good but Rush just a lot that I like more.

Hmm, that's hard to answer!!  Its likely Circumstances followed by La Villa.  Where would I rank them?  Top 20?  Circumstances might make it, depending on my mood.  La Villa? No.  Top 25?  Not likely for La Villa.  Top 50?  Perhaps, somewhere in there for La Villa

This one, in my opinion was the start of another era, the era in which Rush started to go downhill through the excess incorporation of synths.  However, this song itself is fantastic, with relatable lyrics as good as anything in the catalog.   It seems very difficult to reconcile my love for this song with my deep disappointment with the direction it ultimately led to, but I still think it deserves its place here in the pantheon of greatness.

This is the one song that surprises people the most that I down grade.

 

It's a fine song, but it has always been last place on Moving Pictures for me. Never been higher than that.

 

I don't skip it, I'm not insane. It's a good song. But it's way down my list.
