Death Magnetic has been eliminated.

10. St. Anger (2003)

9. Reload (1997)

8. Load (1996)

7. Hardwired... To Self-Destruct (2016)

6. Death Magnetic (2008)

This could potentially be the last round for immunity.

Is Kill 'Em All one of the greatest metal albums of all time? Sure! But would it be if it had been released a couple years later, once thrash had already picked up around the nation? Well, maybe, but it's less certain. The Black Album on the other hand would be just as great as it is regardless of circumstance.

Neither of them beat that trilogy in the middle though. Every one of those three has a legit claim to the greatest thing Metallica ever did.

Thrash would not have picked up throughout the nation without Kill Em All. It was the first thrash album released in America. Metallica pretty much set the standard for the genre with it and everyone else followed.

I know, I'm imagining an alternative timeline where Slayer or Exodus beat them to the punch with just as much success.

It would never happen. Neither one of those bands have an accessible sound. Metallica always had a universal appeal to them. They were the right band to spearhead the genre. Megadeth wouldn't have done it with their debut and Anthrax sure as hell wasn't going to do it with their crappy first album. An alternate timeline without Metallica means the genre never gets passed the underground.
