In my opinion, Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He may not be a technical wizard or play lightning fast, blistering solos, or create music which is nearly impossible to replicate and learn to play, all of which seems to be the criteria to be a "great guitarist" by most people's standards.. But Knopfler is an amazing songwriter and in general, he has a profound musical sense. He knows what to play, when to play it, and makes his guitar sing with such gentle elegance...

The amount of emotion he can pull out of guitar is amazing .

He plays the guitar as easily and effortlessly as Eric Clapton.

Mark blows the overrated Eric Crapton away! Once Eric left Cream he went soft, although I do adore "Derek And The Dominos."

i don't think anyone today would overrate Eric Clapton.

In fact, I don't think he'd fall into the ratings of many.

I was talking about when all we had was Eric Clapton.

Just got Communiqué.

Like it more than the debut on first listen.

What are people's thoughts on this album? I hear it's one of their lesser loved ones?

I LOVE it. it they'd have wanted too. it would have made a great double album with the debut.

if this happened it would be in the running for my fave double album.

not that it was ever considered. it's just a fantasy of mine, lol

Why do you think it's regarded as a lesser album by ranker and ucr.com and all that?

ya know i never understood that. maybe it sounds a tad more polished? that's just a guess.

but song for song i think it's superior to the debut.

Well, I've enjoyed it, and I think I'll play it again now! :) Thanks Mick!

Hm, seems many folks in this thread never really did album rankings. Usually that's a thing that happens in these kinds of threads, interesting.

This is a gorgeous album cover. Far better than the first I might add. This makes me want to travel the world right now.

well you probably haven't heard it all but here's mine.

1. Making Movies

2. Communique

3. Dire Straits

4. Love Over Gold

5. On Every Street. (this sounds more like Knopler solo)

6. Brothers in Arms (the big hit album. Can't stand it honestly. mostly because of it's shitty production. just lifeless.)
