I respect treeduck not ever owning a mobile phone. I was a bit late to the cell phone game myself not owning one until 2006. Only got my first smart phone two years ago.

I used to have the what do I need one for mentality as well. But as time went on it became necessary to have one since everyone else has them. It's just become too common place not to have one.

It does come in handy for emergencies whether it involves life, work or something else.

But keep kicking it old school and don't get one ducky if things are just fine for you without it.

I say all this while posting from my smart phone lol.

Try calling you. :P Actually, when we go out fishing for a week at a remote location. It's usually the last thing I think of along with a computer. My friends usually bring some type of GPS emergency contact device.

Well,

Back in the day. I would go alone if no one else could make it. Not so much these days. Age is catching up. There are some places out of town that I will drive to by my self. BTW, I am wearing my British Harris Tweed hat today. :D

Your chances of surviving are a lot better encountering a Grizzly/Brown bear.

To be fair though,

That Grizzly is most likely on its own for the first year being away from the mother or was separated from her. That accounts for the size difference.

I feel like the internet (amplified many times by smart phones) is a technological revolution that most people just weren't ready for.

The internet has enabled a generation of self-education and enlightment unlike anything we've ever seen. But instead of going that route, we use the technology to obsess over eachother. Instead of connecting people to ideas and facts, we've just further connected people to people, leaving no respite from the hang ups and judgments we bring to eachother.

Humans today are simply too outgoing. Too social. We worry too much about eachother and not enough about our selves. When computers were hard to use and the internet was the sole domain of introverts and eggheads, it was wonderous. But now the busy butterflies of the world can be glued to a supercomputer in their pocket 24-7, and these social-addicts just can't stop when they're confronted with an unending fountain of gossip and chatter.

"Humans today are simply too outgoing. Too social"...

Are we? I think we ignore each other more than ever. People are often sitting with friends/significant others at restaurants and cafes NOT talking to each other. Instead, they are on their smart phones. Is that more social? More outgoing?

In regards to "connect", I only agree with in the most superficial use of the word. Facebook users with a list of thousands of friends? Who can make any kind of significant connection in that situation? I think it'd make people feel detached much of the time.

The gossip and chatter parts I agree with.

Don't mistake quantity with quality.

It's the difference between a quiet restaurant and a noisy bar. Which is more social? The noisy bar certainly affords a greater quantity of social behavior, lots of people to chat with, more freedom to come and go, but it isn't quality.

A quiet restaurant, on the other hand, is an easy to digest social situation. Virtually anyone can get comfortable with a couple of old friends and chat over a meal. There is nothing overwhelming about it. There may be quality, but it isn't overbearingly social.

The internet has turned into the loudest, most crowded, most impersonal bar in the world. It's social overload without any development of relationship or understanding. It's pure social quantity with no quality. It is unchecked extraversion.

You know, I think a lot of the problem, if there is one, stems from the fact that children today are often given smartphones pretty early in life. I didn't get one until I was fourteen, but my seven-year-old cousin has one, and my brother talks always about fifth and sixth graders running around with the latest iPhone. I think that breeds some form of entitlement, that these kids think they have the world coming to them. That having a smartphone is some sort of basic freedom, like speech or religion. So they use them nonstop, all the time, it seems.

I'm not against young kids having phones, and I don't think smartphone "addiction" is a real concern, but I will say that kids need to get off their high horse a little bit and have some gratitude and common sense.

My son is ten and the only one of his friends that doesn't have one.

I never even owned one of the fat phones from the 80's.

At the time, most people didn't have one of those though.

My friends and I used to rag one of our buddies because he'd be on his fat phone much of the time we were out doing anything. If he were on it too often or too long, 4 or 5 of us in the background would make moaning or slurping sounds or just spout random commands involving schlongs while he was using it. Usually all of those at the same time. It was typical dumb 17-18 year old stuff but we thought constantly being on your fat phone and ignoring buddies was dumber.

It still is.

The fact that nearly everyone does it now doesn't change that!

Yeah I know.

That's what I was getting at without actually outright stating it.

A few posts ago I questioned how social people really are by using their phones too frequently in the physical company of others.

Motorola made the first cell phone connection publicly in 1973....and introduced the so-called 'brick phone' in the early '80s...http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/OldRUSHfan/Communications/shocked%20cell%20phone.gif
