  1. Very sad. Played that first album into the ground for almost three years thinking it would be the only one. Was lucky enough to see Dream Theater open up for Marillion in '89 not knowing they were the opening band until I turned the corner and saw them on the marquee (Spelled wrong of course.) His three solo album projects are very ambitious and they're good for what they are but the last two are a bit too "metal" for me. Very nice guy too. Bought an autographed album flat when he was raising money for a move or a tour or something. Think he was also in Frankie and the Knockouts in the early '80s.
  2. Love them. Never got to see them. I imagine they would be an acquired taste these days.
  3. Portnoy's never really been a drum solo/drum battle kind of guy. He doesn't seem to be very creative in that sense. He can do the Exit... Stage Left solo fairly well.
  4. How did I miss this today? Guess I'm going back to read it.
  5. And Cliff Bernstein. I was hoping for a regular audio version but it looks like it's only available in mp3 so a library might be my best bet because I'm not shelling out $40 for mp3? I'll keep checking it out from the library.
  6. Worked for King Crimson too. I think it would have been great but there's still quite a bit of this story we may never know because they seem to want to keep it that way.
  7. Don't really dig the first two songs A Nightmare To Remember and A Rite Of Passage but I really dig the rest of it and the bonus disc. But again, this album doesn't push the Dream Theater envelope very far.
  8. "Slight mistake." "Confusion" is not exactly what this has caused.
  9. What a nice and thoughtful sweetener. Wonder if it's personally signed or a facsimile.
  10. At the very least I'm hoping for more hooks and melody.
  11. I feel bad for Mangini but it doesn't really matter to me. I just hope they lose their by numbers book. Would have been great if both Mikes were in the band, but hauling around two kits on a tour probably don't make good business sense, but it sure would be awesome to experience.
  12. What a week. First Portnoy rejoins Dream Theater and now this.
  13. This is Dream Theater announcing their retirement without Dream Theater announcing their retirement. Was a lot more shocked a few days ago than I was in 2010. Don't much care about this one way or the other. Whatever works. Feel bad for Mangini (one of the good people.) I was surprised when Charlie got fired, but understood after hearing him live. I was gutted when Kevin Moore left, but understood after hearing Chroma Key. I was over the moon when Derek got dumped and Jordan joined the band. Mike Mangini was the right drummer for the band in 2010 even though I'd have preferred Marco. I'm hoping for something ground breaking but I probably shouldn't be. I doubt there's going to be a paradigm shift at this point. Portnoy probably adds another $50 to my next Dream Theater ticket. If they venture out of their comfort zone, it will be totally worth it.

  15. May not be a problem as the dates are already set up unless there are licensing issues with Live Nation or someone else.
  16. That must have been special. Passed on his last few dates playing the Irdium mostly because it cost more to get to New York these days than than ticket prices there.
  17. Anything with his name on it. Wish I'd seen him live. Almost did in the years before he died. But you figure guys like that should be around forever. Like Jeff Beck. IOU Live in Japan 1984 is sitting in a small pile of CD's I'd like to get to this weekend.
  18. Since Geddy is reading it pretty much makes this essential too.
  19. That could go either way. This eases him back into the touring mindset and he may be doing some recon about the feasibility going forward. Also this is a lot more structured than his last book signing tour which was very informal. If he doesn't like the way the machine is working these days he could just stop.
  20. In general, Dream Theater used to play Rush songs that either were never played live or had not been played live in decades.
  21. Haven't ruled that out. Certainly not an immediate priority as I continue to enjoy what I have.
