QUOTE (workingcinderellaman @ Nov 10 2009, 11:12 AM) QUOTE (Test4VitalSigns @ Nov 10 2009, 03:04 AM) QUOTE (1-0-0-1-0-0-1 @ Nov 10 2009, 01:37 AM) Can I assume the title is a nod to "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind"? Not directly to the movie per se....the third kind means contact with alien life forms...fourth is abduction. The first kind is a sighting of a UFO. The second kind is when physical evidence is left behind; like landing sites or radiation readings, etc... These categories were created by a famed UFO investigator Allen Hynek in the 70's (BTW Hynek has a cameo in Close Encounters). Spielberg named his flick using third kind as it deals with contact. So is the fourth kind like getting to third base? Then, who's on first?

  4. I used to collect imported beer bottles many years ago. Probably had over 200 bottles, and some were from the originating countries, like a couple of Heineken bottles from Holland that a friend brought back from a visit there.

I love that tune. Amazing The live clip on PT's site is great. Gavin's drumming is more intense than on the studio version. http://www.porcupinetree.com/ The videos are right there on the main page. Also, check out this old Renaissance clip, featuring a 19-year old Gavin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MQy-F0w-BI

  10. QUOTE (lerxt1990 @ Nov 6 2009, 10:45 AM) The second one I was not allowed to watch and only saw it a few years later. For the time (and maybe even for today in a show of that format) it was very provocotive and scary. Remember the rape scene from "The Sopranos"? That was tough to watch because they went all the way and showed the actual rape. It was brutal. It was also incredible TV, and Lorraine Bracco deservedly earned an Emmy nom because of that scene. But, that was HBO... The "AIIF" almost-rape scene was ballsy TV not only because it was network TV, but also because it was happening to one of TV's sweetest and most beloved characters. And the way it was dotted with humor was genius storytelling, because it made sure you didn't forget you were watching this happen to Edith Bunker. Edith: Do you want coffee??? Rapist: I don't drink coffee. Edith: I got SANKA! The scene was shocking back in the '70s, but I think it would be just as shocking today if they did it with an equally beloved sit-com mom.
  11. QUOTE (Kudzu @ Nov 5 2009, 05:56 PM) And don't forget "Arrested Development". One of the most consistently funny shows on television, two and a half seasons and it's gone because Fox got impatient with its average ratings. Another great Fox series canceled way too soon that is being brought to the big screen so its fans can have some resolution. If you haven't seen "Arrested Development", the first season is on Hulu, IIRC. If you like "30 Rock", you'll like it. They've recently started showing "Arrested Development" on IFC. http://www.ifc.com/arrested-development/
  12. The first season of "Murder One" was groundbreaking. A whole season dedicated to one court case, and it was a great case -- a Hollywood murder. They assembled just the right cast (lead actor/lawyer Daniel Benzali was magnetic and authoritative but never overdid it), showed the case and the closed door proceedings from every angle, and plotted it all perfectly. Lots of cliffhanger endings. It was a critical smash but did only so-so in the ratings. The producers thought Benzali wasn't "leading man" material so they canned him and brought in the more well-known Anthony LaPaglia. They also thought asking the audience to tune in every week for 24 weeks straight to follow just one case was too much to ask, so they strayed away from the one case format and did three or four, and the ratings dipped even more. There was no third season. I think they should have stuck with Benzali and stuck with the same format. Maybe it would have found a bigger audience and gotten past two seasons.
  13. Nice job! That sounded badass!
  14. QUOTE (H. P. L. @ Nov 4 2009, 10:53 AM) QUOTE (Rushman14 @ Nov 4 2009, 02:35 AM) George Clooney isnt half as funny as he thinks he is. He needs to stick to dramas. I think, with the good combination of director/script, he can be. In "From Dusk to Dawn" and "Brother where are thou" he was. Sadly, in the last Cohen's movie (don't remember the name, the one with Brad Pitt too) he wasn't. In the Coen's "Burn After Reading," Clooney forced it. In that role and a few others like it, it's like he's trying too hard to be funny. He bugs his eyes out and yells, and it doesn't seem natural for him. He's more effective with a deadpan approach, which served him well in the "Ocean's" films.
  15. QUOTE (Rushman14 @ Nov 3 2009, 04:36 PM) QUOTE (1-0-0-1-0-0-1 @ Nov 3 2009, 02:26 PM) I guess I have to compare this movie to the three Star Wars prequels in terms of the sheer amount of CGI-based landscapes and characters. Cameron, humble as usual , says this movie of his is unprecedented. Is it that much of an advance over what Lucas did, or is he just hyping the hell out of this (and blowing sunshine up his own ass)? Honestly, those avatar people look pretty CGI to me. It definitely looks CGI, but really good CGI. But Cameron blew when he said this was gonna be a "game changer". Some of the Navi facial expressions look pretty awesome, while other stuff looks kinda cartoony. It should be a couple of hours of good eye candy though. A couple of hours? Are you forgetting that this is James "Three Hour Minimum" Cameron we're talking about here?

  17. QUOTE (Pags @ Oct 31 2009, 10:17 AM)QUOTE (GrandDesigner @ Oct 31 2009, 10:05 AM) It's amazing how unique a vibe they had pre-In Absentia. IA is probably my favorite album of theirs but they lost that great psychedelic vibe they had on the earlier albums completely by then. The Incident feels a bit more in that direction than FOABP or DW which is probably why I love it so much. Dark Matter from Signify is the very first song I heard from them, and the floaty psychodelic lush sound is what grabbed me. But then I heard the more recent stuff and I haven't been able to stop listening. I need to dive more into the earlier material now. I have a friend in N. Carolina, and we've been friends for over 20 years. He's a big Rush fan like us. He called me last night and says, "You ever hear of a band called Porcupine Tree? A fellow Rush fan friend down here gave me a CD." We spent the next 20 minutes talking about why we like them. Another one hooked.

  19. Cyg! You can play "La Villa?" Cool!

  21. QUOTE (Rush Cocky @ Oct 26 2009, 12:09 PM) Sounds like a great show.... ....but were The Mellotrons ever really prog? Someone should start a thread on that. Any group that uses a Mellotron is prog by default. If Nickelback uses one on their next album, they will be known as a prog band.
  22. Here's a clip of Gavin playing it at the Modern Drummer Fest last year. He plays it more aggressively than normal because it's a drum clinic setting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OTivGZmhYQ Note the verses are in 7/8, but his hi-hat pattern is even over that. He does that a lot to smooth out odd-time sigs.
  23. QUOTE (GhostGirl @ Oct 23 2009, 04:49 PM) Just picked up The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett ...at the library. Going with some old-school hard-boiled detective fiction? Cool. Trivia: The three "pre-cogs" in the movie "Minority Report" were named Dashiell, Agatha and Arthur -- named after mystery writers Dashiell Hammett, Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle.
  24. QUOTE (GhostGirl @ Oct 23 2009, 01:45 PM) My son ran upstairs last night: "Mom! I just found 'Point of Know Return' and 'Icarus' in the Rock Band store!" Needless to say, both were downloaded and played immediately - well, I had to do vocals because my hand is still in recovery from surgery. It was great fun! Both are live versions, BTW. (We also got 3 Alice In Chains songs. ) Sah-weet! Very cool that they'd include a proggy deep cut like "Icarus."
  25. Excellent photos! As good as the architecture and craftsmanship of those buildings looks in those pics, it must be even more impressive in person.
