  1. It could be that I'm more prone to irritation because of my tinnitus. When it's too quiet I hear this constant shoooo-eeee-shoooo-eeee-shoooo-eeee. Too much loud rock n' roll, I guess....
  2. There are way too many songs that are ridiculously repetitive as the result of poor or lazy songwriting. Best Of You by the Foo Fighters and New York Groove by Ace Frehley are but two examples. That's what I think it is, too - it's kind of lazy. Work in some different melodies and ways of delivering the line, if it absolutely has to be repeated, or throw some countermelodies overtop.
  3. I was actually thinking about this song, too - but I don't find it repetitive at all, at least not melodically - or maybe you meant I am deviating from the norm...
  4. I don't know why - it sucks - but I find myself growing increasingly irritated by too much repetition in music. It could be my tendency to fixate on repetition. I'm talking about songs that repeat the song title or a key line in the song over and over and over as the song fades out. "Sending out an S.O.S.! Sending out and S.O.S.!..." I dig Daft Punk, but there's that one song that drives me nuts, Lose Yourself to Dance. Whodunnit by Genesis is annoying, too. I recently listened to Mike Rutherford's album Acting Very Strange, and I swear every song on this record does it at the end. At least when Rush does it, they sort of change it up melodically a bit, don't they? "Closer to the Heart"... It's okay if you all think I'm bent out of shape over nothing much - just wondering if anyone else has noticed this, or noticed other repetitive riffs or things that kind of get old fast.
  5. I will be thankful for every good day you have, Lorraine.
  6. But is the name of the paper still blurred out?
  7. Let's call the whole thing off. (Someone had to say it.)
  8. I used to like BTO - particularly this album - but I find the band a bit irritating now. I like the instrumental song, but I can't recall the title. Edit: Free Wheelin'
  9. Except out of all of those, only earth (and dearth) rhyme with "pert". The vowel sound is different in all of them. Yeah, I just meant to demonstrate the variability in pronunciation as a way to suggest why so many people might hear it differently in their own minds. When I was a kid, I assumed his name rhymed with "Heart." At some point in high school, a friend told me it sounded like "Pert." I didn't learn the correct punctuation until later.
  10. Wishing you peace and comfort, Lorraine. (Tulora's a great name!)
  11. Bear. Dear. Dearth. Earth. Heart. Pear. Tear. Tear. Wear. Year. What the ear hears in "ear."
  12. I picked up a case today. I think it's pretty good, and the can has quite a nice design.

    GASP!!!

Just gas with a p at the end. Embarrassing.
  14. According to the Wandering the Face of the Earth book, it was Primus that encouraged Rush to bring back the Hemispheres stuff
  15. It's an interesting question - it does seem to fit with the theme! I'm not sure I've come across anything about that being a consideration when choosing the sets for that tour, but maybe other members have better memories than I do!
  16. So far this is the most helpful reply. Is there any archives of this or was it scrubbed from the internet? Like I said before I’m not well informed on this subject. I thought it was a forum but that archived post said “interactive site” and that description is pretty vague so I really don’t know what it was like. As for the other replies was the fallout really that bad that nobody wants to talk about it? Am I bringing up bad blood with this thread? Why so much interest in ancient history? Just curious, I'm one of those people that looks forward instead of back. And have you tried looking for results on the Wayback Machine site? I think I get the impulse in this case - if anything were archived, it could be interesting to go back and read what people in other forums were talking about when Rush was mid- or middle-late career and fans might have been more apt to talk about and speculate about things. The number of actual new Rush topics on this forum has sort of dwindled and become overshadowed by threads about other bands and things. Don't get me wrong, I love TRF and I think the community here is just about second-to-none. But now that Rush is no more, it sometimes feels like a wake... Fortunately, there is practically an encyclopedia's worth of old threads for members to revisit here! I think you were spot on with this reply. This whole community is awesome, but this forum was already ancient history when I joined so a lot of the really interesting threads are long gone or archived, so the only way to get people to talk about this stuff is to make new threads and garner some more interest. Always good to meet a fellow Rush nerd! Maybe the best way to keep conversations alive here is just to post whatever insights occur to you about songs and things. Sometimes members will say that there's already a thread about this or that, but I don't see the problem with re-starting interesting conversations. And the best conversations, as far as I'm concerned as a fan, are the ones about the music and lyrics!

  18. Lorraine, I wish there was something I could do. I hope they are able to sort out the pain and nausea for you soon.
  19. Sorry I missed it - I hope you had a great birthday, and many happy more!
  20. This is good news. I frickin' love that album.
  21. Zumbi, do you have any good local record shops? Are you buying online only because that's the only option?
  22. That keyboard player, man . . . creepy.
  23. My guess is that if there is a defect on the record that causes the tonearm to rise a little, the counterweight will pull the tonearm up off the record to prevent it from skipping across the surface of the record. All I know is that there was a fair bit of hoping for the best involved in setting all that stuff up. The counterweight is tied to a little length of fishing line that has a little loop on the end, and you have to put the loop around the correct notch in a little peg that sticks out, depending on the weight of the stylus . . . or something like that. So far nothing terrible has happened. I have a couple of records, though, that might be so gummed up with dust and crap that everything sounds a bit "fuzzy." If a good cleaning doesn't help, I wonder if it will be a sign that I haven't set the counter-balance properly - maybe the needle isn't fully in the groove? Complicated.
  24. I live not too far from an LCBO (liquor store) that sells craft beer. I'm hoping they get some in! This may mean, of course, that I'm just one of those people who will buy anything with "Rush" on it somewhere...
  25. I have already made my decision about this, Lorraine. When/if I get cancer, I'm going with cannabis. Daily doses of CBD oil. And I will eat all the chocolate cake I want. I watched Janet go through treatment, and it took her away long before she should have - I say this even though it did technically "extend" her life. If they had let nature take its course, she would have slipped into a coma and died peacefully. What happened is that she ended up in pain from lesions and sores until they ended up administering an overdose of opiates. Chemo drugs give lots of misery and pain, from what I can see. Then you take drugs to counter the effects of those drugs, and on and on. I had a complicated excel file to keep everything organized. Her chemo drug, Temodol, was a pill so poisonous that I was not allowed to touch it - it could penetrate my skin and make me sick. What I want is my final days to be filled with music, mellow feelings, friends sharing memories, and lots of cake. I'm not trying to be a wag. I just want all of my favorite things. I know the cannabis thing is freighted with controversy, even now. Is the endocannabinoid system real? It seems there is only really anecdotal evidence of people who have gone into remission after taking CBD oil. But given the choice, that's what I will go with. Having said all of that, I feel it is important to stress, as well, that you get as much information and opinions as you can from as many people as you can. I remember very well how chemo made Janet's last months miserable, and it is on account of Janet that I decided, once and for all, I'd never get chemo. I'm all for dying peacefully having done all the things I can and/or want to do with my health, more or less, intact, without suffering the wretched effects from that poison which will sap whatever peace and happiness I may have left long before my time has come. No chemo for me. I will take it one day at a time. Me too. I didn't even talk about my sister, Cheryl, who died just over a year later, also from cancer. The drugs made her miserable, as well. No chemicals for me, thanks. I'm not a very spiritual person, but I believe, very strongly - very strongly - that personal positivity in your own life, and positive and encouraging words from others, can alleviate pain. I think you will get a lot of those things here - call 'em vibes. Everyone is sending them, and I am sure the knowledge of that will help. It's no small thing to be admired and even adored - and I've seen tons of evidence of that on the forum. You should soak it up. I know it will help.
