  1. I really like the song, and the video had a point, if a bit heavily applied. This song reminds me of Yes' "Going for the One", in that it seems like it's about to careen out of control, but never does.
  2. 70s - Xanadu 80s - Marathon 90s - Ghost of a Chance 00s - The Garden
  3. Journey - Title track to Look Into the Future
  4. It doesn't naturally occur as just 1 word, so I blame the marketers/designers putting out the media for separating Free from Will.
  5. Listening to "Supper's Ready" at the moment. It's lyrics like these that prevent me from loving Gabriel-era Genesis as much as mid-era Genesis: There's Winston Churchill dressed in drag, he used to be a British flag, plastic bag, what a drag. The frog was a prince, the prince was a brick, the brick was an egg, the egg was a bird. (Fly away you sweet little thing, they're hard on your tail) Hadn't you heard? (They're going to change you into a human being!) Yes, we're happy as fish and gorgeous as geese, and wonderfully clean in the morning.
  6. I know, right? I just couldn´t believe it when I first heard it... Just looked those up. Some are fine, some are very strange. Am I missing a backstory?
  7. Lenny! He's a shocker, but that tone!!! :guitar: I looked over several of his song lyrics (chosen randomly) and he's not too bad, actually. Just prone to cliche and really, really repetitive.
  8. I saw the Pink Floyd Experience in a small venue last year. I knew it was going to be very good when they opened the show with Astronomy Domine, followed by Lucifer Sam. http://thepinkfloydexperience.net/
  9. Since no one has mentioned him yet, I will. Actually, I won't. These lyrics should make it obvious. Baby. Yeah. I want to get away [X4] Yeah I want to get away I want to fly away Yeah with you Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah - - - - - So tell me why we got to die / And kill each other one by one We've got to love and rub-a-dub / We've got to dance and be in love But what I really want to know is Are you gonna go my way ? And I got to got to know Are you gonna go my way ? 'Cause baby I got to know, yeah - - - - - Love transcends all space and time / And love can make a little child smile Oh can't you see / This won't go wrong But we got to be strong / We can't do it alone We got to let love rule Let love rule We got to let love rule Let love rule
  10. I'd like to start a list of bands to receive a special award. The award is for multiple instances of egregiously bad lyrics. I think it should be named the "Alligator Lizards Award" after the lyric in the America song "Ventura Highway". Please help me find more bands for this award and provide a couple short example of awful lyrics to support your nomination. I'll get it started... Band: America (Apologies. These guys wrote a lot of damn good songs. Nevertheless...) Ventura Highway 'Cause the free wind is blowin' through your hair / And the days surround your daylight there Seasons crying no despair / Alligator lizards in the air, in the air A Horse With No Name On the first part of the journey / I was looking at all the life There were plants and birds and rocks and things / There was sand and hills and rings The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz / And the sky with no clouds The heat was hot and the ground was dry / But the air was full of sound Tin Man But Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man / That he didn't, didn't already have And Cause never was the reason for the evening / Or the tropic of Sir Galahad. So please believe in me When I say I'm spinning round, round, round, round / Smoke glass stain bright color Image going down, down, down, down / Soapsuds green like bubbles I can't ding them for Muskrat Love, as they didn't write it. But something sure attracted them to that whackass song...
  11. That's hilarious. What a bizarre video. I never knew this was a single. Underrated as a song, too. Prolly the 2nd best song on the album.
  12. Ah the 80's were worse than the 20's with that whole "Great Depression" thing and the 40's with big bad World War II? ;) I'm going to assume when you referenced the Great Depression, you meant to write "30s," and your finger slipped, right? 'Cuz the '20s were pretty darn hedonistic. Anyhoo, yes there were good movies in the '80s, but if you didn't go and see them in the theatre, you had to wait a year, drive to the rental store, hope your movie was available, drive home, watch it, REWIND IT, and then drive back to the store. Thank God they had those handy dropboxes outside the store so you didn't waste another 15 seconds walking into the place...
  13. None of these examples are as egregious as this one: http://www.thatsongsoundslike.com/2010/01/06/kansas-vs-journey/
  14. Deep Purple - Burn and Stormbringer; Perfect Strangers and House of Blue Light Billy Joel - The Stranger and 52nd Street It's funny that this particular discussion is here on TRF, because Rush is the only band I can think of whose albums all seem to be in pairs. Rush and Fly By Night are very similar to one another, but no other albums. Caress and 2112 are linked to one another, but not really to AFTK. Kings and Hemispheres seem like a pair and quite different from PeW... On and on, all the way through the '90s. It only breaks down when you compare Vapor Trails, Snakes and Arrows and CA.
  15. I think that's part of the article's point; there's MORE pop music now than before (as a percentage, versus rock, alt, etc.), so it just drags everything down when taken as an average. Your 2 later points I agree with, and don't contradict what I just wrote.
  16. Who is number one? The Moody Blues I have the same #1 and #2 as you!
  17. Best of Yes Broken into hour-long sections, cuz 79 minutes at once is too much :) That's 15 hours, if you're counting. 18. I can never listen to that song without tears. :musicnote: Watching and waiting for someone to understand me I hope it won't be very long...... :musicnote: I've been thinking for days about my five favorite bands and songs. It's a tough one...I have to give it some more thought. There are several Moodies songs that get me emotional. This is one. There is a continuing debate concerning what that song is about. I think it's about death.
  19. I only have Misplaced and Clutching. I think both are great. I used to closely follow a local prog band in my hometown back in the late 80s/early 90s (their continued survival was no small feat in New Hampshire in the age of Whitney Houston). Their biggest thrill was doing a small tour in the UK, supporting Marillion.
  20. Something tells me that John Lennon would have loved "Chalkhills and Children"
  21. Moody Blues - Watching and Waiting Rush - Marathon E.L.O. - Mission (A World Record) Iron Maiden - The Clairvoyant Vangelis - first movement (Ignacio / Entends Tu les Chiens Aboyer?) (apologies to Joni Mitchell, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and the Beatles)
  22. people get scared when they see math. even simple math.. silly really I used to be afraid of math, partially because I only took up through Geometry in high school and I didn't remember any of it or Algebra. But then when I started college in my 40s I retook those courses, plus Trig and Calculus, and I was thrilled I could do it! I've since forgotten the Calculus but now I'm no longer afraid of math. It's good not to fear math, as I realize I made a math mistake on my posted example! D'oh!
  23. Some great selections and some embarrassing omissions. The Zombies and ELP, but no Days of Future Passed? Led Zeppelin I thru IV, but no Physical Graffiti? Albums on the list I'm embarrassed to say I haven't heard entirely: lots of Stones and Dylan. Albums on the list I am proud to own: Music Has the Rights to Children by Boards of Canada, and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by the Flaming Lips Kind of Blue - Miles Davis (1959) With The Beatles - The Beatles (1963) A Hard Day's Night - The Beatles (1964) Rubber Soul - The Beatles (1965) Today! - The Beach Boys (1965) Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme - Simon & Garfunkel (1966) Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys (1966) Revolver - The Beatles (1966) Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles (1967) The Doors - The Doors (1967) The Piper at the Gates of Dawn - Pink Floyd 1967 The Who Sell Out - The Who 1967 Bookends - Simon & Garfunkel 1968 In-a-gadda-da-vida - Iron Butterfly 1968 Odessey And Oracle - The Zombies 1968 The Beatles (White Album) - The Beatles 1968 Tommy - The Who 1968 Abbey Road - The Beatles 1969 Bayou Country - Creedence Clearwater Revival 1969 Crosby, Stills And Nash - Crosby, Stills And Nash 1969 Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - Neil Young 1969 Green River - Creedence Clearwater Revival 1969 In The Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson 1969 Led Zeppelin I - Led Zeppelin 1969 Led Zeppelin II - Led Zeppelin 1969 Odessa - The Bee Gees 1969 Trout Mask Replica - Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band 1969 All Things Must Pass - George Harrison 1970 Bitches Brew - Miles Davis 1970 Deep Purple in Rock - Deep Purple 1970 Déjà Vu - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young 1970 Led Zeppelin III - Led Zeppelin 1970 Aqualung - Jethro Tull 1971 Blue - Joni Mitchell 1971 Cosmo's Factory - Creedence Clearwater Revival 1971 Fragile - Yes 1971 Led Zeppelin IV (Four Symbols) - Led Zeppelin 1971 Madman Across The Water - Elton John 1971 Tapestry - Carole King 1971 The Yes Album - Yes 1971 What's Goin' On - Marvin Gaye 1971 Who's Next - The Who 1971 Can't Buy a Thrill - Steely Dan 1972 Close to The Edge - Yes 1972 Harvest - Neil Young 1972 Let's Stay Together - Al Green 1972 Machine Head - Deep Purple 1972 Pink Moon - Nick Drake 1972 Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars - David Bowie 1972 Countdown to Ecstasy - Steely Dan 1973 Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd (1973) Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John 1973 Made In Japan - Deep Purple 1973 Selling England by the Pound - Genesis 1973 Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield 1973 Court And Spark - Joni Mitchell 1974 Crime Of The Century - Supertramp 1974 On the Beach - Neil Young 1974 Pretzel Logic - Steely Dan 1974 The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway - Genesis 1974 Another Green World - Brian Eno 1975 Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen 1975 Physical Graffiti - Led Zeppelin 1975 The Hissing of Summer Lawns - Joni Mitchell 1975 - Tonight's the Night - Neil Young 1975 Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd 1975 2112 - Rush 1976 Boston - Boston 1976 Hejeira - Joni Mitchell 1976 Hotel California - The Eagles 1976 Songs in the Key of Life - Stevie Wonder 1976 Aja - Steely Dan 1977 My Aim Is True - Elvis Costello 1977 Out Of The Blue - Electric Light Orchestra 1977 Rumours - Fleetwood Mac 1977 The Clash - The Clash 1977 The Stranger - Billy Joel 1977 The Cars - The Cars 1978 This Year's Model - Elvis Costello 1978 Armed Forces - Elvis Costello 1979 Off The Wall - Michael Jackson 1979 Pretenders - Pretenders 1979 Regatta De Blanc - The Police 1979 The Pleasure Principle Gary Numan 1979 The Wall - Pink Floyd (1979) British Steel - Judas Priest 1980 Closer - Joy Division 1980 Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden 1980 Beauty And The Beat - Go-Go's 1981 Moving Pictures - Rush 1981 My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts - Brian Eno 1981 Imperial Bedroom - Elvis Costello 1982 Number Of The Beast - Iron Maiden 1982 The Dreaming - Kate Bush 1982 The Nightfly - Donald Fagen 1982 Thriller - Michael Jackson 1982 Eliminator - ZZ Top 1983 Murmur - REM 1983 Pyromania - Def Leppard 1983 Synchronicity - The Police 1983 War - U2 1983 1984 - Van Halen 1984 Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen 1984 Purple Rain - Prince and The Revolution 1984 Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits 1985 Hounds of Love - Kate Bush 1985 Blood and Chocolate - Elvis Costello 1986 Graceland - Paul Simon 1986 So - Peter Gabriel 1986 Appetite for Destruction - Guns N' Roses 1987 Hysteria - Def Leppard 1987 The Joshua Tree - U2 1987 Green - REM 1989 Achtung Baby - U2 1991 Nevermind - Nirvana 1991 Woodface - Crowded House 1991 Automatic for the People - REM 1992 Ten - Pearl Jam 1992 Aimee Mann - Whatever 1993 Debut - Björk 1993 Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins 1993 Tuesday Night Music Club - Sheryl Crow 1993 Brutal Youth - Elvis Costello 1994 Dookie - Green Day 1994 The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails 1994 (What's The Story) Morning Glory?
