  1. QUOTE (danielmclark @ May 22 2012, 04:23 PM) QUOTE (ThinkingBig @ May 22 2012, 03:08 PM) Are we really sure we want 'gem' over say YYZ? Yes. In a heartbeat, yes. If none of the "hits" ever got retired, it would be the same setlist time after time after time. As it is, the setlist is 70% the same every tour, and then they throw in a few from the latest album and one or two "gems". IMO, it should be more like 35% the same from tour to tour with 4-5 tracks from the latest album and a much larger dose of songs that haven't been played regularly. That's not true. 2112 was gone on S&L leg 1. Closer to the Heart disappeared for R30 and S&A. Xanadu has been gone since R30. The Trees was not on the last tour. I would agree that they over did MP songs on S&A, which sort of undercut the whole MP entirety on Time Machine.
  2. QUOTE (danielmclark @ May 22 2012, 05:24 PM) The only song that has never been dropped is Tom Sawyer. Every other song has been shelved at least once. There's NO reason any of those songs can't be shelved again. None. Source. TSOR was only dropped for the first part of Presto. They learned their lesson. TSOR is a rock epic, it was alway on the KLOS Memorial Day 500, and usually above TS.
  3. QUOTE (EmotionDetector @ May 22 2012, 04:12 PM) QUOTE (ThinkingBig @ May 22 2012, 05:08 PM) Are we really sure we want 'gem' over say YYZ? Um...yeah. Depending on the 'gem' selected...hell yes. Just because some songs are awesome, doesn't mean I wouldn't mind seeing them shelved for others that I haven't yet seen. I'm a huge fan of all their work, and I don't consider anything 'filler'. I love variation in the setlists...and I'm hoping for much change this time around. YYZ was such a part of my youth, part of my life. Listening to it hanging out in a garage jamming with band buds. Cruising in car, pop in the MP cassette. To me, it's the perfect RUSH song. **hard rocking **visual imagery (even w/o words) **cause a physiological reaction similar to adreneline.
  4. QUOTE (RUSHandOSU @ Apr 20 2012, 08:58 PM) I think if the whole signals thing is gonna happen i could see analog kid as the opening song what about you? limelight again..tom sawyer again.. spirit of radio?? I remember when they opened with Force Ten and Big Money back in the day. But those songs didn't have the "get out of your seat and rock" quality of TSOR or TS. Limelight was a great opener as well. Too bad Bastille day has been but on ice. I could see them trying to force Far Cry on us. Please don't guys.
  5. QUOTE (wilb1972 @ Apr 25 2012, 11:40 AM) Caravan for me. Caravan has the story quality of Red Barchetta. It's a great start to the overall thread we're to follow.
  6. Putting them in some sort of meaningful order is the challenge. So many merit a tie in my mind. There's a 5-way tie for each of the top 8.
  7. QUOTE (Tick @ May 22 2012, 09:43 AM)Those who are old enough remember a pure and innocent time when being a Rush fan was just you and your enjoyment of the band. Your feelings not swayed by the vast opinions of the masses. Now just as video killed the radio star, the internet has dampened the fandom of your favorite bands. Before the internet their was no overanalizing every lick and lyric like is done today. Rush put out an album, and you enjoyed the listen with no outside thoughts or interference. I miss those days. Its just not the same anymore. Its not all negative, but now threads about Neils religious connotations, or, ripping apart the set list they will be playing on the current tour, or saying the new stuff sucks, or Geddy can't sing like he used to. It gets into your head and has an effect on you, its not always a good thing. It kind of ruins the purity of what used to be. That's how I feel about it anyway. I just know their will be some who will agree with this sentiment. Others will say the opposite, and that's ok too. Lastly...Don't forget to like my Facebook page, "The National Midnight Starman" Its a real hoot! I've realized that some peoples' love for RUSH is not unconditional. I've realize that RUSH attracts people with different views than me. I've realized newer fans sometime forget that "yes it was for me not you, that I came to write this song"... Perhaps we old-timers forget that as well. The Anthem lyric sums up the greatness, the purity of RUSH, IMO. It's also the cause of occasional frustration and resentment when a new album comes out or a setlist does meet peoples' expectations. Last, I've realized that some people have a very loose and open definition of the term sell-out. It seems that any deviation from past methods can be seen as a sell-out IF it results in sustained or increase popularity. I never thought the rapping skeleton on RBT was a sell-out. Just a miss fire or experiment that didn't quite work the way they had hoped. But he still made the cut on R30. I went for a hot dog.
  8. QUOTE (Snow-Dog2112 @ May 22 2012, 06:19 AM)mark my words, i predict that the couple of songs that Al talked about are gonna be....Losing it....and Different Strings With all this talk of 'never-played-live' songs, I'm leaning toward glimpsing at the setlist once it's out. (which I try not to) I go to RUSH to hear the great RUSH tunes (and there are at least two full concerts worth IMO). They tossed out Presto last time around, and 1 from S&A, but that was plenty. I saw every tour from Signals - RTB and they always played the good rockin' songs off the new album and left the rest-- the fillers. If a song was worth playing live, it has been played live. That's just my opinion and I don't mean to step on anybody's toes or crap on anybody's favorite 'gem'. But when I read all this speculation, I start thinking, well then you lose The Trees or Closer to the Heart or Freewill. All songs that have been LEFT OFF set lists. I can accept that there is only time for 1 or 2 of the 'Epics' (La Villa, Xanadu, 2112, By-Tor) but when a 5 minute song slot given to a 'never-played-live', this robs us of 5 minutes of RUSH -- that RUSH you feel at the climax of the Trees solo, or when Geddy hits the Freewill high notes, or any of a dozen 'classics' that didn't make the cut one tour or another. The only two songs we know for sure are TS and TSOR. Limelight may have been bumped up into that absolute must category due to its rise in popularity outside of RUSH circles. But the rest is up for grabs. **And keep in mind, those videos seem to get longer every tour. The three hour show is really only 2 and a quarter of music--it seems. Are we really sure we want 'gem' over say YYZ?
  9. QUOTE (terryturtle @ May 22 2012, 12:56 PM) I say: Anthem Lakeside Park Fly by Night A Farewell to Kings Jacob's Ladder The Body Electric The Big Money Lock & Key Double Agent Virtuality Anthem Lakeside Park Fly by Night A Farewell to Kings Jacob's Ladder The Body Electric The Big Money That's 40+ minutes of music right there.
  10. QUOTE (Godeater2112 @ May 22 2012, 01:36 PM) This list is always intriguing. The vast majority of this material is either "not particularly stellar by Rush standards" or "probably wouldn't translate that great live". I would add to that, it is the album fillers that help us to appreciate the really great songs off each album. The songs we look forward to hearing live. And of course, MP has no fillers. I hope Alex was just spinning his wheels and as they cut the setlist down, the notion of playing some obscure 'never-played-live' song falls by the waste side. It's also possible, Alex is looking at songs that he doesn't remember playing live (but did)... That I could live with.
  11. QUOTE (RUSHandOSU @ Apr 20 2012, 08:58 PM) I think if the whole signals thing is gonna happen i could see analog kid as the opening song what about you? limelight again..tom sawyer again.. spirit of radio?? Tom Sawyer, then Analog Kid... O-oohhh, thematic.
  12. QUOTE (Snow-Dog2112 @ May 22 2012, 06:19 AM) mark my words, i predict that the couple of songs that Al talked about are gonna be....Losing it....and Different Strings I hope they stick to CA and they RUSH classics we all know and love. Not album fillers.
  13. QUOTE (SchemingDemon @ May 21 2012, 10:01 PM) EDIT: This probably should be in the tour section, my bad Well, Alex basically confirmed in the interview in snowdog2112's thread that they're considering busting out a few tracks never heard live before. QUOTE (Alex)We`ve been throwing about set lists for the last couple of weeks and the length of the set is creeping up to over 4 hours so we`ll have to reign it in and fine tune it. There`ll be a good portion of new material and some older stuff that we`ll be revisiting that you haven`t heard in a long time. There`s also a couple that we haven`t played live before that we`re thinking about doing. There`s quite a few in contention for the final set list. Say they'll play three previously unheard songs. Which songs would you love to hear? Also, what do you think they WILL play? I really want to hear Everyday Glory, Open Secrets, and Vapor Trail. My guess is that they actually will play Vapor Trail and Cut to the Chase. Not sure why I have this gut feeling Vapor Trail will be busted out Here's the full list: Take A Friend Before And After Making Memories Rivendell The Fountain Of Lamneth Lessons Tears Madrigal Different Strings Losing It Emotion Detector Open Secrets Second Nature Tai Shan High Water Chain Lighting Anagram Red Tide Hand Over Fist Available Light Face Up The Big Wheel Heresy Neurotica You Bet Your Life Cut To The Chase Alien Shore Speed Of Love Everyday Glory The Color Of Right Totem Dog Years Carve Away The Stone Peaceable Kingdom The Stars Look Down How It Is Vapor Trail Sweet Miracle Nocturne Freeze Out Of The Cradle Bravest Face Good News First We Hold On Please God and little Baby Jesus with your baby Jesus Einstein developmental make Alex Geddy and Neil forever forget how to play any of these songs. Please little baby Jesus I want to hear RUSH songs, not album fillers.
  14. It's a RUSH album, how can anyone doubt it will be great and have something every type of RUSH FAN can appreciate. It might not end up being one of your favorites, but we already have 3 great tunes, so why worry? It can only get better.
  15. Alex: If your looking at songs you've never played live before... don't. There's a good reason you didn't play them live.
  16. QUOTE (Motorshooter @ May 18 2012, 05:08 PM) With the new Rush album just weeks away, I'm reading a lot of great topics here, very few negative ones. This place will explode come June 12! A great place to be! You said it!!
  17. RUSH is hard rock band. They have prog influences....
  18. QUOTE (D3strukt @ May 17 2012, 09:35 PM) Look at the birthday message. Tony Geranios. Who's that?
  19. my head hurts. rules are for... they should play enemy within, analog kid, by-tor and the snow dog
  20. 2 at the most for me. I could see going to more shows if they mixed up the setlist and didn't play the same songs every night. I like traveling out of L.A. to see shows. Get bored of Irvine Meadows.
  21. L.A. to NYC. But went back and saw them in L.A. too. Does that count?
