  1. Try these: Modest Mouse, The Shins, Franz Ferdinand, and The Strokes. They aren't prog bands, they're what you would call indie, but I think they have the creative element that a lot of the prog bands from the 70's possessed. Here's a song from each to start you off. These songs should be a good, quick gauge of whether you will like the band or not. Sea Legs - The Shins This Boy - Franz Ferdinand Ocean Breathes Salty - Modest Mouse Juicebox - The Strokes
  2. QUOTE (CrossedSignals @ Apr 17 2012, 11:48 PM) QUOTE (CruisingInPrimetime @ Apr 17 2012, 11:42 PM) We aren't Nsync a lot of the time. I hope you aren't NSYNC any of the time. But in all seriousness, cool jamming! I agree, though, you guys need to get tighter. You and the guitarist seem to be locked in pretty well, but the drummer's having a little trouble staying in the pocket. Cool musical ideas though! And nice bass tone! I realize this is just a jam session Thanks man! I agree about the drummer being off and I'll take some of the blame for that as well. Jamming more really is the only way to iron that out. Which is fine by me, I love jamming! Stay tuned, a couple months from now hopefully I'll be posting an album here on TRF!
  3. QUOTE (Animate @ Apr 17 2012, 09:02 PM) I really enjoyed that clip! Also, the artwork fit the mood of each piece really well. The last one, with the scene that looks from Dagohba with such a good impression of the sounds of animals at night was cool! At what point in the creative process were the images matched to the music? Rush is Rush however, no one could ever replace them! Sad to think it will inevitably end one day. Thanks! I picked the images after I made the compilation of clips. I didn't even plan to have pictures, but then I found out you can't upload audio files to Youtube. So I opened up Movie Maker and just sort of found cool pictures and then matched them up with the music that I thought was most fitting. The last jam however I knew I specifically wanted a swamp. That's the vibe I was getting from it. I think I typed in "Spooky swamp" on Google. Thanks again, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
  4. The title of this thread may have been a stretch. I've been jamming with a guitarist and drummer for about a month now, and I'm pleased to say I think I've found my Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart. Here's a compilation of 30 second and 1-minute clips of our jam yesterday. Some Geddy-like basslines to hold you over until Clockwork Angels is released. Give it a listen and let me know what you think. Besides us what band will carry the torch when Rush is gone? Porcupine Tree?
  5. I don't get why Rush doesn't just throw on a 9-minute song. It wouldn't even be hard for them and they gotta know fans would go crazy. I heard that the Main Monkey Business was originally something like 14 minutes long and was cut down. It could easily have been a modern-day Xanadu. I'm not complaining, I just really don't get it. Aren't they curious as artists to see if they can still make a 9 or 10 minute song? Say, "okay, we're going to make a 10-minute song and have it change enough so it doesn't bore people." Lee, Lifeson, and Peart sit down, write a 10 minute song. If it's doesn't sound good, then re-work it, or start from scratch. Keep doing that until you write something twice as good as Natural Science or The Camera Eye. They should just take one for the team and smoke marijuana before writing an epic. They would probably have a blast. Take one for the team guys. By team, I mean TRF and all Rush fans, and when I say guys, I'm talking to you Lifeson. I know you're on TRF. There's so many Lerxts and Lifesons on here that there's no way to tell which one you are, but I know you're reading this. Get high, Lifeson. And if you need a little beer beforehand to calm your nerves then get High Life, son.

  7. I can't give an opinion one way or the other in regards to the 30-second clip because all of have to base my opinion off of is the 30-second clip.
  8. Is Rush your absolute favorite band?? If they're not, who do you like more? And if Rush IS at the top of your list, who's your runner-up? Rush is no doubt my favorite band and will always be. Number 2 for me would have to be Genesis. More of the Gabriel-era stuff, but certainly some of their later stuff, as well. What about you?

QUOTE (Gompers @ Mar 22 2012, 01:31 PM) QUOTE (Kent @ Mar 22 2012, 01:42 PM) QUOTE (Lerxster @ Mar 22 2012, 12:36 PM) Parts of it remind me of La Villa. Villa eh? No, that's not it. I'm about to give up here!!! I think it's something from Test for Echo. Virtuality. I think you're right. They have a similar guitar sound.
  11. QUOTE (J2112YYZ @ Mar 20 2012, 08:15 PM) QUOTE (Presto-a RUSH fan! @ Mar 20 2012, 07:44 PM) QUOTE (danielmclark @ Mar 20 2012, 08:04 PM)"At the one-lane bridge I leave the giants stranded at the riverside. Race back to the farm, to dream with my uncle at the fireside." Doesn't get much clearer than that, I think. Agreed. The lyrics speak for themselves on this one. I hope you had some riding on that because you won that bet. One lyric I had wrong for about the first 4 years of being a RUSH fan was the last sentence. I always sang "Race back to the farm, to DRINK with my uncle at the fireside." Even though I now know it's "dream", I still like to sing it my way! Oh good, i'm not the only one who used to get that word wrong. 20 years ago when I first got into them I used to think he said drink instead of dream. Either way the line makes sense so it never bothered me that i had that word wrong. I have since corrected myself when I sing along to it now I thought it was drink too! This must be a pretty common thing among Rush fans. It makes sense - drinking around the fireside. I kind of wish it WAS drink. Edit: I should add I've know it's actually "dream" for about a year now. My friend corrected me on it, but he had an even worse misheard lyric. He thought the lyrics in Money For Nothing were "Get your money for nothing, checks for free" And he made fun of me when I told him it was chicks!
  12. Favorite song on Signals.
  13. Live versions I think sound better than the studio versions: Faithless - Time Machine Turn the Page - Show of Hands Territories - Show of Hands Big Money - Show of Hands By Tor and the Snowdog - Exit Stage Left Xanadu - Exit Stage Left The Pass - Rush in Rio Bravado - Rush in Rio Dreamline - R30 Earthshine - R30 Secret Touch - S&A Live The Weapon - GUP 1984 dvd
  14. I like them both equally. Every song on Moving Pictures is totally different from the next. Signals is the same way. If you didn't already know, I'll bet you couldn't guess which songs are on which record. In my opinion, the quality of both records is the same, the only difference is slightly more keyboards on Signals. Edit: This was in response to Tommy Sawyer and Rushgoober's posts. I forgot to quote them.
  15. QUOTE (danielmclark @ Mar 19 2012, 05:28 PM)Moving Pictures and Signals aren't that different when it comes right down to it. Witch Hunt and Vital Signs could have gone on Signals and fit right in. I think there's a far bigger difference between HYF and Presto. I don't think there's a single song on Presto that would have fit in on HYF. I'd also give the nod to TFE->VT since VT rocked way, way harder than TFE. I totally agree that Moving Pictures and Signals are not that different in regards to style. Subdivisions or Analog Kid could have easily fit well on MP. And Vital Signs or Witch Hunt could have been on Signals, like you said. Also, Chemistry reminds me of Limelight, especially the verses.
  16. QUOTE (Cyclonus X-1 @ Mar 18 2012, 05:36 PM) QUOTE (The Owl @ Mar 18 2012, 05:08 PM) Track #3: Chemistry [...]Now the lyric writing over the past few albums has been fun watching Neal get better and better, but here he kind of falters, not a big fan of them here. All three of them contributed to Chemistry's lyrics. Are you sure about that?? I thought they each wrote a different section, not lyrically, but musically. Geddy wrote the verses, Neil wrote the chorus, and Alex wrote that shredding guitar riff and the waltz after the solo. I was under the impression that Neil wrote all the lyrics for this song, but I could be wrong. Edit: The waltz after the solo is on Losing It, not Chemistry. Don't know what I was thinking.
  17. Hemispheres to Grace Under Pressure. I'm surprised more people like 2112 than Signals. I would have thought AFTK to Signals would be the winner. Signals is like Moving Pictures part two.
  18. Had to go with Big Money. Also a great opener to A Show of Hands.
  19. Who the hell likes Rush only for the lyrics??? This is an Easter egg on the R30 DVD, I'm pretty sure.
  20. I voted for Presto. It sounds kind of like Roll the Bones, but I think its predecessor, Hold Your Fire, sounds nothing like it. Hold Your Fire and Power Windows are very similar stylistically. I've never understood why people say Hemispheres was Rush's last progressive rock album. Natural Science is probably the proggiest thing they've done beside Book 2 and maybe Xanadu. Even Freewill and The Spirit of Radio, while short and accessible, are still "prog."
  21. Faithless for me. It could be my favorite Rush song of all time.
  22. It's like Rush is a vehicle for a force much greater than themselves. So many Rush songs are like they're meant to be written. Lifeson said something like the songs on Moving Pictures seemed to write themselves. Rush's music is truly from the depths of human imagination, and I would go as far as to say it's divine. If God had a voice, it would sound like Geddy Lee. I'm not a Christian, I'm actually trying to convince you that Rush is God.
