Segue Myles
A Song Of Ice And Fire is not a patch on Tad Williams Memory, Sorrow And Thorn. In fact, no Tad Williams, no Game Of Thrones. Before he read Tad Williams and fell in love with his work, George R. R. Martin had no intention of ever writing fantasy. I've tried his books. I prefer the show and I could live without it easily. Never even heard of Game Of Thrones before it was a TV show. This season has been pretty good though. Not following the novels this time worked to it's benefit. There's not as much meaningless bullshit this season and everything is getting more to the point.

Depends on what you like, I suppose,. I read so much fantasy I think I came to them way too late. In other words, through no fault of my own, I read too many similar books that obviously ripped them off. And I also find them far too similar to Tad Williams. Fridge
I would say Tad Williams is better than both. Even if Tolkien did inspire his best work... Tad Williams ftw! I like Tad Willams output very much, but to say he is better than Tolkein is really just absurd....

His entire created world, vision and storytelling is second to none. I honestly think he was the greatest literary genius of the 20th century. Now for purely personal reasons, as a matter of taste, Tad Williams is the most enjoyed fantasy author in my collection. I honestly find Memory Sorrow And Thorn to be my favourite fantasy series of all time. But I was wrong to imply he is better than Tolkien. I didn't articulate my thoughts very well. As for George Martin, from what I've read he is deserving of his success. Recently I tried Robert Jordan and...it's best we don't go there...what a hack.

That must be it. JKR is not a very imaginative writer, her stories aren't very unique, but with the addition of the movies she's done very well for herself and made a boatloads of money. Yes but being enjoyable doesn't always mean something is well written. The Harry Potter series is such a ripoff of LOTRs it's funny. Dumbledore/Gandalf, Voldemort/Sauron. Etc. I have heard there are other books that are similar and were precursors but I haven't checked any of that out.

Besides,Tolkien based his characters on established archetypes and his characters are fairly wooden. And for all the similarities I neither mistake Rowling's world for Middle Earth, or the plots as similar. And I think her writing is excellent and Rowling is my favourite writer for characters ever. I rank her equal to Dickens.
Segue Myles
I also found Dumbledore a completely different personality and character to Gandalf and Voldemort was a far more human villain than Sauron, his weaknesses were more obvious and his back story tragic. I honestly don't think there are many similarities at all beyond being works of fantasy. Tolkiens books themselves are plot wise not really all that unique even for the time period. He was heavily inspired by ancient epics and "ripped off" countless worn out tropes. The big difference for Tolkien is his genius world building. Something I loved about Rowling as well, only she was inventive in a far more playful way.
