This thread's taken a really weird and mildly disturbing turn...

I always liked PoW's cover art. My least fav would have to be HYF though, just seems forgettable.

Actually I like this one better than Power Windows. Also enjoy the man juggling the fire on the inserts!

There is nothing wrong with that cover. It's simple but very striking and almost iconic. Simple can be very effective.

Item #1 on "Top 25 Things That Must Occur on Lists Involving Music in America": Rush will get dogged for something. I take it as a point of pride, actually.

As for album covers... one of the things I have always appreciated about Rush is that, for the most part, their album covers have some meaning in their context.... kind of like their music... which is why so many people don't like Rush... leading me back to Item #1 on "Top 25 Things That Must Occur on Lists Involving Music in America".

PS The most disturbing part of the Power Windows packaging is the back photo. That's a nip shot none of us need....

I like the man juggling fire better than the actual cover. IMO, they should've used him somehow, would've made the title more immediately humorous. That's just me though, there's nothing really "wrong" with HYF's real cover, it just doesn't strike me as outstanding.

Don't think a humorous cover would be appropriate for this album. This cover gives it an "elemental" feel. Whatver that means...

Only humorous to the extent of Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves, Signals, etc. I can see where you're coming from though. HYF does seem to have more than its fair share of heavy subject matter and emotional songwriting. But of course, MP had witch hunt and Vital Signs, Signals had Losing it and Subdivisions, and Permanent Waves had Natural Science and Different Strings.

The Time Stands Still video is one of the most humorous things I've ever seen. Maybe more humor/camp would helped the album make some sense  .

Regarding the Hold Your Fire cover. I imagine that the cover being entirely red is akin to an iron in the fire when it turns red because of the intense heat. It's like the album cover is "hot" and retaining its fire. Seems like I remember Neil stating once that they tried to alternate every other album with how busy or simple it should be. After a "busy" cover like Power Windows, the tendence was to go for simple for hold your fire.

The very same thing happened with Yes' "Close to the Edge". The cover is simple for a reason: it was to make the new Yes logo dominate the cover. It was the first album with that iconic logo and any imagery on the cover would have competed with it visually. Roger Dean wanted fans to really see the logo.

I think its shameful for Yahoo to put Power Windows among all these stupid glamor shots album covers. Clearly the author does not get the relationship between the album and the cover. I am sure Rush would also disagree, since its that album cover that hangs in the Anthem office. My vote for the worst Rush cover is probably Counterparts (not enough going on there for what the album is). Power Windows might be my favorite cover, but I have never really made the decision.

yeah, I don't care for Counterparts cover art. It's minimal like Hold Your Fire, but again, the brilliant color of HYF balances it out. If Counterparts had used a blue silver cover, it would have been more striking.

So much effort went into the interior art design for Counterparts so the cover could've been better. Same with Clockwork Angels. The art in the booklet is fantastic. Cover not so much.

But you have to admit, there was never a better place for a 2112 reference.
