(They Might be Giants - You're on Fire)

Really dig this one. I've heard the name "They Might be Giants" mentioned on the periphery of my musical journeys, but I honestly don't think I've listened to them before this. I like the slightly more melodic portions about a minute and a half in quite a lot. And I mean this as a positive, something about the vocalists timbre in this song reminds me of Weird Al Yankovic. That's not a bad thing, as I've always considered him a pretty solid vocalist. I think it's just the crystal clear enunciation- no word is slurred or inaudible.

Thanks for listening. It's funny you brought up Weird Al, because They Might Be Giants is one of Al's favorite bands. It makes sense because They Might Be Giants uses quite a bit of accordion in their songs. Anyway I guess I will post another, just to ensure that this forum topic stays strong because it is a really good idea. First of all, Ken, the song you chose was very beautiful, but also quite haunting at the same time. I enjoyed it quite a bit, and just like the last song you posted, I loved the distant organ at the end. Now for my song, I am tempted to post one of the electronic songs that I am into (like Owl City or Daft Punk) but I am scared the wrong person will listen to it and not have much to say because they are not a fan of the genre, so I think I will pick something that is a bridge between preformed and produced music. This is Panda Bear's Tomboy http://youtu.be/ur1JvEcInaU (sorry the first half second of the song is cut out, but this is the only video I could find (not counting the full album) I found out about Panda Bear after hearing his collaboration with Daft Punk, and he did not disappoint. His main appeal to me is his ability to write engaging minimalist songs, which is a style of music I want to like, but have trouble with. If whomever listens to this enjoys this song. I recommend listening to the full album video on You Tube for the first song because it flowed so naturally into the second song, for the longest time I was under the illusion that there was no break between the 2 tracks, when there actually was. Enjoy fellow TRF user!

Not gonna lie had a hard time getting through that one. I guess minimalist music is not my cup of tea. Song just never really went anywhere

Yeah, minimalism is hard to get into. I find it best to listen to minimalistic songs, but not pay attention to them, treat them like soundtracks to your life. I always listen to this album while doing homework, and I am both more productive and more appreciative of the music than if I give it a dedicated listen.

I liked the one. Not so much the sound of his voice but the vocal melody and lyrics reminded me a little if REM michael stipe. I really enjoyed the interlude at the end. Rhythm was a little weak. I am going to check them out further, however if none of their songs have enough backbone will probably not become a fan. (Doesnt mean heavier, just a more distinctive rhythm)

The song I posted is from Dredg's album "The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion", and if you're looking for a little more melodic backbone, I'd suggest the songs "Information", "I Don't Know", and "Lightswitch" from the same album. All in all it is one of my top-5 favorite albums ever (I believe I've mentioned that on TRF before, not just blowing smoke), I think Dredg is one of the most underappreciated bands around.

All right fine I will be the first to actually respond to the song. I was at first a little skeptical when it started because I have an natural gag reflex to acoustic guitar, however once the other instruments came in and the electronic guitar started, it sounded really good. The guitar solo was enjoyable to, and I loved the distant organ at the end. I got a kind of vibe that this song could be used as a theme to a reality show though, as it sounded like something that would accompany a misfit about to do something weird but interesting in badlands or something like that. Either way good track. And now I challenge the next listener to take on They Might Be Giants' You're On Fire http://youtu.be/0gFECzmDLrI Only 7 months old, this song hooked me immediately as I bought my first album by them not knowing a single song off of it. This song did not disappoint. In my opinion it's too catchy to resist. And it uses all major chords while on a minor scale, those are my favorite kinds of songs. Any way enjoy next brave user. Oh yeah, there is an official music video for this too, but it is very weird (think singing meat and air guitar playing vegetables) and almost entirely unrelated to the song (as is the They Might Be Giants way) so I put up just the audio, but look it up if your interested.

Good stuff. I am always down for stuff like this, feel good music. Clean sound can tap your foot and fun lyrics. I coukd see myself goin on youtube to check em out on a day i was feeling adventurous

When you do look them up, some of their other "tap your foot and fun songs" are Doctor Worm, Experimental film, The Guitar, Celebration and Don't Lets Start, also I recommend if you are checking them out, Birdhouse in your soul (highest charting at #3 on the alternative charts) and Boss of Me (their Grammy winning song that they wrote for Malcolm in the middle), and You Probably get that a lot (just another personal favorite).

(Panda Bear - Tomboy)

While I didn't care for the vocal style in this track, I really enjoyed the tone of the synth throughout. Like TXRush, I'm just not too into minimalism; but the track has a solid foundation, and like you said, it was easy listening in the background as I worked. With a more robust vocal melody over the instrumentation on this track, I think I would've really liked it quite a bit.

Well, another good one from you Ken, I enjoyed the various layers to this song, and surprisingly the heavy guitar did not bug me like I normally does. I loved the violin solo, as well as the first 45 seconds. Only low for me was the vocals, nothing wrong with them, but their evanescence style just is not for me. Well, let me go again then. I can't believe more people are not jumping in on listening to new music. I especially think of users like the guy who started the Bruce Springsteen thread (forgot his name) would want to be here as he can get someone to listen to a song of his and give an opinion. Oh well, if it's just the two (or three) of us then so be it. I think I will challenge the next user with Oingo Boingo's No One Lives Forever http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKSdUTV_sb0 It is probably one of the most fun songs about death you could think of (besides another Oingo Boingo song that I will post at some point). I put up the live version because I like it's more punk like atmosphere than the album versions dance rock sound, and because Oingo Boingo is just so much better live, and at this, their farewell show, they were truly on fire the whole night. Last thing to note, that red haired lead singer is Danny Elfman, film composer for almost every Tim Burton film as well as other favorites like the Simpsons theme. Enjoy.

There is some good stuff posted in this thread. This is my friends band Three O'clock Train. This is the entire album called "Muscle In" which was released in 1987. The Montreal Gazette gave it 5/5 stars when they reviewed it.

Wait, you have to give a specific review to the above song (the one I posted) before any of us (most likely me or KenJennings) will review yours.

Fair enough! It's very different but it's pretty good. I will probably check out more of their stuff.

If you are going to look into more Oingo Boingo, I would highly recommend listening to the live version of Dead Man's Party first and foremost (I will probably put it up as a song to listen to soon), and then after that you kind of have choices, if you like new-wave/post punk, listen to Only a Lad, On the outside, Grey Matter, Wild Sex (in the working Class), Who do you want to be, and Sweat. If you like Synth/Dance Rock, Listen to Elevator Man, Stay, Try To Believe, and Not My Slave, If you like general 80s rock listen to Just Another Day, Home Again, Long Breakdown, and Run Away (The Escape Song), and lastly if you like 90s rock (punk, grunge, alternative) Listen to Hey, Pedestrian Wolves, Change, Spider, War Again, or anything from their live farewell concert. Anyway, I don't exactly have time to listen to an entire album, so could you pick a track and give me the start time to listen to? I like Dark yet Upbeat songs. If you don't respond in a day I will just listen to the first track.

Alright, I admit, I am not a big fan of country rock/folk rock, but this was nice, I thought it was a nice flowing piece, and well put together. One complaint for me though is that there were no real stand out spots in the song for me to get excited about, like for example how I get majorly pumped when the bridge section of Presto comes in. Sorry I don't have more to say, but I don't have much to say about this genre in general. Now for my next challenge for a fellow TRF user. Please take a look at Butterflies by Port Blue (which is actually a side project of atmospheric songs by the same guy who is Owl City).
The Port Blue catalogue is a great source of background music for me and is good for me personally to show other people that he knows what he is doing musically (because some immediately associate Owl City with bad pop music). The Reason I picked this track is because I freaking love the bass line in it. I also thought that it is probably the closest song in the port blue catalogue that comes to rocking, so it would be the best pick for the forum. Enjoy whomever you are.

The bass line and the drums are pretty cool but I probably wouldn't listen to it. I find it more of background music.

This is a new band from Montreal called The Damn Truth and they are damn good, and they have an amazing classic rock sound.

The Damn Truth - Kinda Awkward

That was a pretty good song. The first thing that stood out to me were the guitar riffs, and they certainly kicked ass. You were right about them having a classic rock sound; you could have told me that song had been released in the '70s, and I probably would have believed you. I would type more, but I have never really been good at reviewing music. I'll have to check out more of their songs when I have the time.

This next song is an instrumental by the Travis Larson Band. I posted a thread about them a while ago, but no one replied.

Tool - Lost Keys / Rosetta Stoned

Tool is a great band, excellent songwriting, excellent instrumentals, and this song is no exception. A lot of Tool's work reminds me of the heavier elements of Dream Theater. The one thing I didn't like about this track was the amount of distortion put over the vocals through a lot of it. I get that they want that gritty, jagged sound; but I just generally prefer a cleaner tone. Solid track though!

Endochine - A New Beginning

Very Radiohead. From composition to vocal delivery, to instrumentation. Almost sounds like a Radiohead clone band. Thank god I like Radiohead and dug this. :)

Not sure how mainstream my random pick is (the person who first recommended me to it listens to a lot more mainstream stuff than I), so I apologise in advance if this is something you've heard a dozen times this week. I guess this guy has won some awards (?).

Liked both those, especially Endochine (I'm a huge Radiohead devotee and I get the comparison). My offering as I've been on a six-month Wire kick. This track ("Trash/Treasure") was left off the album from the recording sessions because one band member thought it was "too pop," but I love it, especially the playout starting at 2:40. Another band member, who likes the song, says it is remiscent of Nils Lofgren, though he says you'd have to know your rock history to get that connection (I don't, not being a Springsteen follower).

^ If I'm being honest, I didn't like it much... Especially odd production. The latter instrumental half was the better part.

Nice song pick. I liked the vocalist, really nice voice. The music feels like its being inspired by quite a few 90's/early 00's pop rock bands, but does not grab from any one inspiration any more than another, making this very unique and grand tribute to the era. Not sure what the lyrics are about upon first listen, but i enjoyed hearing the words "shes a tree" over and over.

So far this has been the best song I have heard on this forum, and thank you Mr. IsNot for resurrecting it.

Here is my suggestion, a fun song called Little Fang by Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks, a side project of Animal Collective by Avey Tare (duh). Ever since this song came out in April I have not kept it out of my constant song rotation. It has a nice dark feel to it, yet its also catchy and upbeat. Also, Bonus its kinda Halloween themed-ish.
