Segue Myles
Dream Theater by a country mile for me. I just don't get the big love for PT. They are really over-loved. I don't think I had even heard of Porcupine Tree until I joined this forum. I had, and didn't realise they were such a big deal. Still don't get why, but to each their own. stoopid
It really wasn't until Deadwing that PT crossed my path. Even then, it was a few years until I embraced them and went backwards through their catalog. I'm definitely a fan, there's a healthy mix of styles and just enough virtuosity (namely the drumming, bass playing, and SW's songwriting) to hold my interest. bluefox4000
this is harder for me than you might think. i have a deep Love for DT but........was introduced to PT through this place. I think DT can be way more patchy than PT honestly I mean DT has monster albums like Images, Awake, Scenes, Six Degrees. but than you also get stuff like Octavarium, Black Clouds, The Astonishing and Distance over Time ( i don't give a fukk what the fans say this album is aging kinda poorly for me) But PT has the run from Signify ALL THE WAY to fear Of A blank Planet.. which is a super fun, Super melodic, Catchy string of albums. shockingly PT wins here. being fair and taking EVERYTHING into account. DT may have and IMO DO have higher highs but PT is just great album after great album.. And again HUGE DT mark but....yea there it is. I'd agree 100% that Dream Theater at their peak is better than anything Porcupine Tree has done, but PT is more consistent song to song, album to album. IMO there's no filler on any PT albums, with minuscule amounts of 'going through the motions' or excessive noodling/wankery. Todem
Love them both. But the edge goes to Porcupine Tree. That 3 album run of, In Absentia/Deadwing/Fear Of A Blank Planet - Nil Recurring is simply divine. Edited January 17, 2020 by Todem
