Number Of The Beast - Happy 34th Birthday

One of the few albums in the history of music that is rightfully a 10 / 10

Happy Birthday Number Of The Beast

I still remember walking into that record store / headshop where they had Tempest next to all the posters and belt buckles, and buying the album wondering if Maiden would still have it after losing Paul Di'anno ..

I was reassured about 10 seconds into the record

One of my least favourite of the classic Iron Maiden albums. Reputation says it's a 10/10. For me it's a 6/10.

The next four albums are all much better.

Question is...would Total Eclipse fit the album better that Gangland or was it fine the way it was originally intended?

I like both songs, but Gangland was more suited to the rest of the album ... Love Total Eclipse though

I feel much the same. It's got amazing tracks on it, but it doesn't come close to reaching the highs of Piece of Mind (which I have gained more appreciation for), Powerslave, Somewhere In Time, or Seventh Son.

I like Brave New World (top 2) and AMOLAD, and perhaps Book Of Souls more than Beast as well. Book of Souls perhaps because there is simply more music to enjoy.

Segue, you don't think each song is fantastic, and overall, the album extremely consistent ??

Which songs do you think fall short ??

( watch, you're going to list the ones that are my favorite !! )

Nevertheless, Beast is definitely an album that the band should be extremely proud of writing. Hallowed Be Thy Name is musical porn.

I love the different opinions here .. and this is one I am totally not used to hearing

Maybe it's the old nag in me - but I feel completely the opposite

Clive Burr was my favorite part of Maiden, and that coming from a guitar player

Because it is The Beast's birthday, I'm not going to disparage it one bit

But Killers is the greatest metal album off all time

Clive Burr was a great drummer in his own right but I prefer Nicko. I can totally understand why some pick one or the other.

There's also definitely a bit of a difference in opinion on the post-1999 Maiden. I don't ever hear it get shat on but there are a lot of people who almost strictly prefer the early 80's material because of its immediacy. 3-6 minute thrashing, yet melodic monster metal music.

On the other hand there are people who really appreciate their proggier side, which started really coming into form on Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son, and was carried on with Brave New World to the present. Some albums don't quite live up to the best standards like Dance Of Death or Final Frontier but the ones that do, really do.

I'll always hold a great appreciation for the 80's Maiden, especially that brilliant run of PoM-Seventh Son.

Only song I love is Run To The Hills. I hate the title track. The rest is ok.

It was my first Iron Maiden album after a best of. It almost destroyed my interest. Killers is a much stronger album, and Piece Of Mind blows it out the water. Then along came Powerslave, and to my ears that is a 10/10. I would rank it below all the modern Maiden albums, above Blaize's records...and possibly above No prayer For The Dying and Fear Of The Dark.

It is not a record I can honestly say I will ever desire to own. I won't say it's overrated, it just does nothing for me. All its initial success I put down to the fact that Killers built up great momentum, and Piece Of Mind cemented their fanbase.

I like them. It's honestly not all that great to me.

They went on to better things. It had a huge impact, changed the metal landscape for many, but just because it made a wave doesn't mean the subsequent albums are inferior because they weigh less cukturally than the former. They are honestly better to my ears.

Number Of The Beast doesn't come close to the brilliance of the modern Maiden albums to my ears either.

Nothing tops these:

1. Somewhere In Time

2. Brave New World

3. Seventh Son

4. Powerslave

5. AMOLAD

6. Book Of Souls

7. Piece Of Mind

These are pretty good:

8. Beast

9. Killers

10. Final Frontier

11. Dance Of Death

12. Iron Maiden

These are mostly, if not entirely garbage:

13. No Prayer

14. Fear Of The Dark

15. X Factor

16. Virtual XI
