The Art of Rush

Anyone else have it? I just got it and only read the beginning but it's really amazing. I've seen the 2112 logo a million times but knowing all the work and how Hugh achieved the effect I realize I never really "saw it" and will forever look at it differently.

Can't wait to read and peruse the rest of it. A real treasure!

Yes, as a matter of fact I just got it for my birthday. I told myself I was going to pace myself reading it, but of course I read the whole thing almost in one sitting. The album cover art itself is amazing. When you put the book beside the actual album cover you notice how different the end product is. The terrible photo below doesn't do it justice except you can see the difference in color:

I'd like to see some pictures of what the inside of the book looks like. It's a lot of money to spend on something that you don't know what it looks like.

I can try to take a few more shots, E. Stay tuned.

Yeah, that's pretty much closer - but my copy of the album has very different colors. Here's what the author writes:

"The album cover is suffused in a nearly monochromatic ice-blue, which is a far cry from the palette of colors Hugh incorporated in his 40 X 40 painting. On the original canvas, there are lavender hues in the water and the darker clouds include a variety of warmer tones. . . . [syme:] '. . . . You can do a painting, but then you're relying on the cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks of a printing press to interpret that painting. It can do a brilliant job with the facsimile of color or it can bastardize everything. I cringe every time I see the result, but I have to live with it.'"

I hope I'm not overloading a server or something with these pictures! Maybe avoid quoting . . .

There are a ton of goodies in the book - lots of alternative images and sketches and things. There's a lot of text, and I did learn quite a few things I didn't know (although what I don't know you could fill up the Grand Canyon with etc.).

I think you're fine. The pictures came up immediately for me at least. Appreciate you doing this.

I concur. Every album since Farewell to Kings I found myself tearing open the package and checking out the art first. (Then lyrics, the listen). I was always searching for the hidden gems and humor and symbolism, etc. so, yeah a big fan of the art.

This gives a band's timeline and a little story behind each album to help explain how and why the art cam about. Like in 2112, the man against the world represented the feeling the band had against the record companies and edicts to be commercial instead of artistic.

It explains how Hugh made the techniques used in making the art which is much more complex than imagined. It's a book you can really get lost in and amazed by. Much more than I even hoped for.

And it was a birthday present as well :)

Here's how dumb I am: I read nearly the whole page through the transparent overlay, struggling to make out the words that were obscured by the darker images, before realizing that it was an overlay. I guess I was engrossed.
