What is this shiite about 'low-profile' tires? Don't these idiots know that the tire is your first 'shock absorber' in your vehicle's arsenal against the road? Gees. http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/OldRUSHfan/Angry/angrycursing.gif

50 series? The old tires were usually 75 series bias ply tires. There was some serious roll in those old tires.

Anyone know what "KR" after the GT500 stands for? Or what makes this car a GT500?

The GT350 was the small block 289. The GT500 was the big block 428 cobra jet.

The KR stands for "King of the Road".

Yes! I wonder if that was Carrol Shelby's idea. Years later when he was at Chrysler he developed the Omni GLH.. which stood for Goes Like Hell!

Used to have low profile tyres and I never felt them to be a problem.......they make you feel much more involved with the driving experience and improve handling imo.

Car suspensions have improved so much that low profile tires don't give the horribly rough ride that they used to.

I was watching the Barrett Jackson auction a couple of weekends ago, and this car came up.

http://i2.cdn.turner.com/money/dam/assets/151207075515-gallery-collector-cars-purple-people-eater-corvette-1100x619.jpg

It's call "The Purple People Eater", and it was one of the most successful Corvettes in auto racing. When my father was working at Nickey Chevrolet in Chicago, he sat in this very Corvette. He went ape shit when it came up for bid.

Events promoter Chip Miller and car restorer Ken Heckert bought this 1959 Corvette at a swap meet in 1974 for $800. At the time, it didn't have this flashy purple paint job and the two men reportedly had no idea about the Corvette's history. Only years later did they realize they had bought the famous Purple People Eater.

When it left General Motors (GM)' factory, this Corvette -- equipped with a number of performance options -- was white with a black interior. The purple paint job was added by Chicago's Nickey Chevrolet for its race team. They wanted their cars to stand out on the track. Also helping it to stand out was the fact that it was often in the lead.

The "Purple People Eater," named after the hit song by Sheb Wooley, won the 1959 Sports Car Club of America National Championship for its class. It's powered by a 283-horsepower V8 engine with a four-speed manual transmission. Nickey Chevrolet had won the same Championship the year before with two other purple Corvettes -- hence the "Mk III" on this car -- but both those cars are now lost, said Tom Stephani, whose family owned Nickey Chevrolet. This is the only surviving Purple People Eater.

Nickey Chevrolet sold this car in 1961 and it raced for a few years with other teams before being forgotten. Even Miller and Heckert, after driving the car a bit, decided that it probably wasn't worth much. It spent a decade under a tarp in their shop where it was used as a table. Then Miller, coincidentally, began research to find the Purple People Eater and quickly realized that he already owned it, his son Lance Miller said. He had the car restored to its championship appearance. Today, it's said to be worth about $1 million.
