Richard Hammond's 10 favorite "muscle cars".

It's no secret that I love muscle cars. Deciding on a favourite is about as easy as getting one through a London width-restrictor - there are just so many classics out there. Anyway, I think I've got it down to 10.

My obsession started back in the 1980s, when I spied an orange Plymouth Road Runner Superbird, huge wing blasting skyward. I'd never seen anything so cool.

Thing is, they seemed to have the names to match the style; Barracuda is a great example, a perfect blend of compactness and aggression - just saying ‘Cuda' is enough to evoke the buckets of attitude that thing had.

The Nova (pictured) and Chevelle were classic muscle cars for the blue-collar worker - cheap and fast, great examples of what the whole pony car scene was all about.

Then there's the Camaro, which has to be one of the most sublime-looking cars ever. Doesn't matter if it drives like a sack of s**t - it's gorgeous...

...just as the Mustang is. I was so taken with the Fastback Mustang that Steve McQueen drove in Bullitt, that I ended up buying one, and still have it now. I guess these cars' presence in the great movies I watched as a kid has got something to do with giving them such an aura.

I was also once the proud owner of a Dodge Charger, one of the most beautiful muscle cars of all. There are so many lovely intersections in its shape.

The Challenger is the opposite - challenging to look at, like the Coronet (inset). Neither are traditionally beautiful cars, but they have a sense of purpose, of contained energy. Modern muscle cars simply can't capture that. The Merc SL65 Black, for instance: it lacks the subtlety of these American greats.

Last, but not least, and the only UK entry, is the Capri - a British Mustang, a masterpiece. It has a black bonnet and all bonnets should be black by law.

They just looked like race cars...

I was thinking of including these in a next NASCAR themed post... loved these cars as a kid. Makes sense as why I wanted a '80's Monte SS later on.
