jwoods89
What does everyone think of this album from Opeth? It is certainly different from their other albums, but I like it quite a lot. Thoughts?
ColdFireYYZ
I love it! Unlike most of their fans I really like their new direction. It was one of my favorite albums of 2011. I was actually just listening to it yesterday and it still hasn't gotten old.
jwoods89
Listening to the whole album currently for the first time in awhile and it has a lot of diversity in it. A lot of people don't like it really because it isn't death metal or metal at all really and doesn't have growls, but it's so experimental and fresh sounding. I love it. deathlikesilence
i dont know why people are surprised - damnation was also a full-on prog album and all of opeth's albums have heavy prog influence
Gompers
It is great music lacking the ambient shit he did with Wilson on Storm Corrosion.

deathlikesilence
their best albums had the growling on them but they kinda pushed their metal side as far as it could go

Thoughts? Good riddence Mikael's singing voice is unique, well controlled, and pleasant. I know growls are done for effect but to me is nothing more than a distraction from the music. I saw a video of Mikael from right after Heritage was made. He explained why Heritage was done the way it was done. He also said the growls would be back. In fact, the songs he had been writing for the album that would become Heritage had been heavy songs with growls. When I saw them last year, their part of the show was all clean vocals. But when Bloodbath came out for the encore, he did nothing but death growls, and it was freaking awesome. Has he since come out and said he is done with growling? H. P. L.
For me it's not a matter of growls/no growls or heaviness/no heaviness: it's just that the songwriting is weak. It lacks Opeth's signature originality, their dramatic approach... It seems that it's just concentrated on being a perfect homage to 70s prog, down to the sound and the production. Songs that go one half in one way and the other half in another way... would that the result was moving, or interesting... but it's just sterile excercise to my ears. It doesn't say anything other that: "wish I was in the early 70s in tour with Museo Rosenbach". Huge disappointment. Damnation is millions of miles better. I don't care how Mikael sings, he's great either way. And the great part of Opeth is how they can quiet it down amidst the heaviness. But on Heritage, I just felt like the songwriting wasn't there. The last song, especially, is pointless, repetitive, and dull. Edited July 30, 2012 by Sheldon Cooper
