I think it's the BEST song on the album... Sorry dude, I can't get past those lyrics. Gary doesn't like the lyrics because they're a bit close to home. Those of use who still have our hair though think they're cool, fun lyrics...

Really, lyrics to I Think Im Going Bald are not that bad, except for that all important first refrain... The first refrain just killed the song totally for most people. I looked in the mirror today; My eyes just didn't seem so bright. I've lost a few more hairs. I think I'm going bald, I think I'm going bald. Especially the delivery of the last line is just not appetizing at all. Get beyond this and it is actually a pretty decent song, great riff and guitar. Lyrics cover the same themes of growing older, getting experienced, loosing youth and innocence that are covered in many songs, all the way up to CA. Same theme as in Time Stand Still, Making Memories... Seems like only yesterday We would sit and talk of dreams all night, Dreams of youth and simple truths. Now we're all so involved, So involved with life. I walk down vanity fair, Memory lane ev'rywhere Wall Stree shuffles there, Dressed in flowing hair. Once we loved the flowers, Now we ask the price of the land. Once we would take water, But now it must be wine. Now we've been and now we've seen What price peace of mind. Take a piece of my mind. My life is slipping away. I'm aging every day. But even when I'm grey, I'll still be grey my way Are you saying ITIGB isn't metal? No, just that the lyrics are beneath them. At that point in their career? After an album of basic rock n roll and when they were almost at the point of being dropped by their label? At any point in the Neil Peart years. Well I don't agree son... No, REALLY??? Why don't you dissect the lyrics Gary so I might better understand your problem with them? I don't see the problem with the subject matter or the lyrics. Like I said in a previous post, you don't like the subject matter because you've had the same problem yourself. You've lost a few more hairs! "I think Goober's goin, Goober's gone bald! spock
I guess I liked ITIGB right away because I was just learning to play the guitar and I could figure out the riff (oh, to be 17 and able to play ANY RUSH song!). The lyrics were weird on the first pass, but I took it as a tongue in cheek tune that got more serious as it went along. As time's gone by and I've lost a few more hairs myself, the song has stuck with me (I'll still be grey my way). Definitely part of my soundtrack... As for COS - I've read the books, articles, interviews, and it's well documented. What I think is the miracle is that RUSH was left alone for every album after 2112 to do their thing. Was 2112 successful? You bet - but I'm surprised the suits would really let them alone for so long.
DistantEarlyRushFan
It is a really good album that is plagued by a few bad administrative decisions by the band. Bastille Day is a classic rocker. I Think I'm Going Bald is a nice track if you don't take the lyrics seriously (Peart didn't care?) Lakeside Park is a solid track. It is a little forgettable because it lacks a little bite Necromancer - has an ill-advised narration (doesn't bother you if you take it for what it is, a misstep). Otherwise it is a little too long for some ppl's attention span Lamneth - seems a little disjointed. But it is powerful when it comes together. I think it is a little too long for it's own good and some parts just seem to come out of nowhere. Overall, just an example of how the band would take left turns their whole career, as it resembles FBN very little. Also, their influences seem to be a little transparent (Necromancer [black Sabbath and Lou Reed])
Mika
QUOTE (Chronos @ Jul 17 2012, 07:41 PM) I don't think I've ever read an explanation behind the album's name. Anyone know any stories about why the band chose Caress of Steel as the title? What's the inspiration? Good question; I don't know. It seems to fit pretty well, but then maybe I'm just used to it! ucsteve667
QUOTE (rushgoober @ Jul 17 2012, 06:44 AM) It had two songs with a lot of commercial potential - Bastille Day, and especially the vastly underrated Lakeside Park. IMHO Lakeside Park should have been a massive hit. Other than that, it's got one pretty stupid song (I Think I'm Going Bald), one song that could have been great but was killed with the narration (The Necromancer) and a very long song that I personally love, but isn't exactly the most instantly accessible track (Fountain). It took me 20 years to really get into and love The Fountain of Lamneth. Overall, I could see how it could come off as a bit pretentious and difficult to penetrate to the casual listener at the time. For me it's their weakest album overall from the whole 1974-1987 period, even though it's got some truly great material on it. It's one of their harder albums to get into. COS was the 1st record for me ever, to take a fewe listens to get it. I hated it at first, but I was like 14 years old. only thing I skip is Panacea...everything else is A-B+

I always thought they were "caressing" the steel strings of their instruments? That works too, probably a double, or maybe a triple reference. In addition to By-Tor slaying his foe (with a sword, presumable), there is also the guillotine beheading in Bastille day.
ACL
I think part II of The Necromancer, Under The Shadow is an Epic piece of Metal albeit 1:37min. Can you imagine how that must have sounded in 1975 up against music by The Guess Who or The Carpenters.
