Black Metal

Can anyone recommend a few essential atmospheric black metal albums to start out with? I'm really getting into Agalloch and Alcest, so I'm looking for more music in that style. There's a ton of videos in this thread and the extreme metal thread, but it's kind of overwhelming and I don't really have time to listen to all of them.

Sure, here's a few off the top of my head.

Gallowbraid - Ashen Eidolon

Walknut - Graveforests and Their Shadows

Lantlos - .neon (this actually features Neige on vocals)

Ulver - Bergtatt

October Falls - A Collapse of Faith

Falls of Rauros - The Light That Dwells in Rotten Wood

Coldworld - Melankolie

And you'll definitely want to check out Songs of Moors and Misty Fields by Empyrium even though it doesn't really fit into the black metal genre. It's fairly similar to Agalloch.

Cool, thanks!! I'll check out some of those suggestions and report back. The only one I've heard of is Ulver, but I'm only familiar with their newer material.

Incredible song, the vocals and atmosphere are just otherworldly. i have no doubt this album will be in my top 5 BM albums of the year.

What about avant garde progressive black metal in a spaghetti western theme style?

Seems legit

That whole album is excellent, I was just listening to it! :haz:

(plus as a bonus there's a hot chick in the band)

Black metal certainly has good comedic value. That can not be over looked!

Ever wondered what it would be like if King Crimson played black metal? Check out the band Murmur. Some of the best avant-garde BM I've had the pleasure of listening to.

Btw, they even did a King Crimson cover!
