Guitar Center is pushing the new Axcess on their web page. 4 granny is too much for any guitar made before 1962. Period.

Agreed. As cool as the Axess is, it's not worth that kind of money. But that's been Gibson's thing lately -- jack the price up on their premium guitars because they think the name alone makes it worth the exorbitant price.

And I don't think the QC is any better on the $4k ones vs. the less than $2k ones.

Together my HRF, 339, and one of my american dxl strats is still less than or at $4k.

Nothing against big al, they sell out for sure, so the demand is there, I just can't do it. Plus I like player's guitars because I'll do something stupid to it sooner or later. tongue.gif

Have you seen the video of Big Al on musicians friend hamming it up with the guitar?

http://backstage.musiciansfriend.com/media..._Gibson_LesPaul

I hear you guys on the cost and all on this- personally even though I paid less for it, I am more afraid of my vintage HRF than I will be with the AL Axcess. I'm kind of with Al on the utility of this guitar with the floyd, the piezo, and the coil switching. And it doesnt cost too much more than the standard axcess, which is the guitar I play the most right now.

I have a tracking number for mine- should be here this Friday!

I want pics by Saturday then. Right out of the box, 10meg resolution, not crappy phone pics like I post....and close up too like wacky gonzo porn close. Haha. Guitar porn.

Oops! AFTER 1962, not before. Duh.

AL57 is pretty badazz. Is it heavy? How does it play next to your other 2 gibsons.

I like the hrf better than 339, but new is fun. Nice to play. I'd like it better if middle position was both hb in series and it had a spilt coil (for the current middle sound) but that is just a nice to have.

The Axcess is fairly light compared to a Standard. A substantial amount of wood is removed for the Floyd Rose plus the neck joint is sanded down and there are contours on the back. Hardly like a Standard at all. This is more or less a Gibson version of a PRS style guitar. Even the action on the display models was a little low for my taste.

Skid's is very pretty though!

Yeah I'm pretty jazzed about the flametop biggrin.gif The AL is substantially heavier than my standard Axcess, even though it has even more wood routed out for the piezo battery. I dont think it is chambered like the standard Axcess or the else the mahogany is a lot denser.

Tonally it is a lot heavier and darker than my other Axcess, which I would agree with CygnusX-1Bk2, is a lot like a PRS tone-wise. I wish I had a 10 pound LP custom to play against it and see how much the FR and all that routing costs in sustain and tone, but I dont- I think the AL is a really good compromise all around for a guitar to gig with.

The setup on the AL while good is not quite to my preferences, Gibson always wants to put 10's on them and have been a 9 player for a long time, so I need to get a little work done before I try and really dial it in. I think it will be a great workhorse, it is super versatile, but it probably will not be my favorite to play (that is still the HRF).

I dropped mine to Eb tuning, level out the bridge, straighten out the neck and lower the action, did an intonation job. Plays great

Hey tskidmore I sent you a PM and an email

Ha! Great minds think alike! I have been using Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottoms for years, at least 10 or more. More thickness, more tension, more tone!

Stevie Ray used to play .013 E strings, but he tuned to Eb. I payed with a guy who used .012's. After playing bass more regularly the heavier bottom strings feel more natural to me now.

I tried the 10-52s on my Strat, but that extra 3/4" of scale length over the LP really made a difference -- didn't like how stiff those gauges felt. Ended up sticking with the Hybrid set 9-46, which on a Strat feels almost the same to me as 10-52s do on my LP.

With that in mind, Stevie using 13s on his Strat, even tuned down...what an animal!

I've heard srv started with 13s, but used mostly 12s, and by end of his career was down to 11s....but he is still a beast. I just looked, I only have d'addario 10-46, so not that much different then 9s I guess really. I like the slinky 10 tops but the A string is not good for me.

Guess I'm not a beast, ha.

I like Ernie Ball's wound strings better than D'Adarrio's. Less string squeak when you slide your hands down the neck, and they sound nice and lively to my ears. And I think they hold their tone longer too.

Guess what arrived in the mail today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My signed Viceroy Brown AL 19

And my unsigned Crimson AL 44

cheer.gif  common001.gif  applaudit.gif  icon_alienjig.gif  eyesre4.gif

I can just imagine how stoked you are about the guitars, I know I was when I got my crimson.

I hate like hell (and believe me on this) to let you know that both of those guitars at some point will need to go to an authorized dealer for service because the piezo is bleeding in no matter if the volume of it is at 0 or if you are using the life-o-sound jack. I reported this to Gibson last week and they are now aware of the problem and working on it.

Try it for yourself..as I'm confirmed this problem with other owners

don't shoot the messenger.. eh.gif
