can someone enlighten me as to what i'm hearing in caravan? the part where geddy starts singing "i can't stop thinking big", is alex playing his guitar or is it a keyboard? i'm not talking about the backround layer of power chords but the part layered on top of that.

I think I know what part you're talking about, and I can't tell if it's guitar or keyboards either. Anyone know for sure??

I love Far Cry and Caravan. IMO it's too soon to know if they're Rush "classics", but I think they COULD be.

sadly, I have to confess that Beyond the Lighted Stage alerted me to the amazing fact that Rush is still evolving and still making music that matters, both to them (if it didn't I doubt they'd still be in the game) and their fans. the snippets of newer material that are tucked into that film told me I really need to check out Vapor Trails, Snakes and Arrows, and the upcoming Clockwork Angels, plus some of the 90s stuff I missed.

for me, the live performances of some of these new and "newer" songs stood among the many high points of the Columbus show 8/29.

Sounds like a guitar to me.

And I'd say both of these songs are classics.

Not sure which one I prefer yet...

i think it's the high pitch notes that throw me off a little. honestly i think al could have created something much more melodic and killer at that part. easier said than done i guess but it just sounds out of place to me.

The two new RUSH tunes are mucho awesomo...I hate when this happens though...I gain access to two tracks of this type of high caliber, just like a little whiles back with Dream Theater's newest release, and the tunes are thoroughly 'played out' far prior to the album ever reaches shelves. These are some really good songs, mang.

Great thread man! Your right, I'm 21 and I beleive that Caravan and FarCry are the classics of today, but I'll go to the grave wishing I could have experienced the seventies. You older guys are so lucky.

I dunno how ya figure that...We're closer to the grave...I'd exchange that for being a clueless kid once more...And, I'm not old enough to have experienced the 70's...I used to say the same thing myself about how cool it must have been to check the band out during those 70's tours... My RUSH concert adventure started in the late 80's when they were in what I believe to be a major decline.

I just know Goober knows much about music. Hell he turned me on to Nektar and I thought I knew every band out there! As of for sparring with Balboa! I guess I rather have that than sparring with Tyson!

Balboa lets me keep my ears!

You should thank him plenty for the Nektar turn-on...That band is much deserving of attention...

Roll the Bones is a great Album: Yes it was much different than Hemispheres but then everyone is much different then when Hemispheres was released! Just think Hemispheres was released when Disco was at it's high point and Roll The Bones when Rap was coming into its own. That should put things into perspective. Two completed different eras. And now they've released Far Cry and Caravan during the Techo/ Bubble gum Era for lack of a better word! Look! Just be glad Rush made it though all the crap so we can enjoy their genious now in 2010 and beyond!

Wow! Rush has transcended more than any band I know!

And they are Still kicking @ss!

Far Cry - yes, absolutely a classic

Caravan - no.gif

I feel just the opposite. laugh.gif

I find the lyrics on Far Cry fantastic, and the chorus especially seems to be very universally relatable as part of the human condition. The song is inspiring and hopeful. It's also catchy, and it rocks hard - it pulls me in from the opening notes and doesn't let go. Ok, the guitar "solo" is barely a solo, but that's the only weakness.

Caravan does have that GREAT instrumental breakdown section, and the opening is really cool, there's no denying that, but the lyrics, and especially the chorus, I find pretty weak. In between the cool beginning and the instrumental break it's just too heavy of a riff with nowhere near enough melody to balance it out. The whole "I can't stop thinking big," doesn't do much for me, even the "in a world where i feel so small, I can't stop thinking big." I just can't relate to those lyrics, and it's not a very melodic song - even the cool instrumental section doesn't have much melody. It's a decent song, and they've done far worse, but it's far cry from a classic IMHO.

But those lyrics suggest so very many possibilities for satire:

I can't stop eating pig, I can't stop eating pig,

In a world of Kosher Rabbis, I can't stop eating pig.

or

I can't stop watching porn, I can't stop watchig porn,

In a world of real live girls I can't stop watching porn.

or

I can't stop poking fun, I can't stop poking fun,

In a song with corney lyrics I can't stop poking fun

...

That being said, I LOVE Caravan and BU2B. They are, IMHO, absolutely the very FINEST offerings from Rush since MP in 1981. I've been literally waiting 30 years for those songs. I can't wait for CwA.

Remember we are only been exposed to 1/6 of the entire work which is Clockwork Angels! I beleive once we are exporsed to the rest of the work we will understand " I can' t stop thinking big"

Hey are doing an epic! First time in 3 decades. I think that's pretty Big!

So Keep thinking big guys! Kepp thinking big1

I guess it's possible those lyrics will suddenly take on some new meaning, but I'm not holding my breath. I think songs, even in a concept album if this truly is one, need to stand on their own, and lyrically Caravan doesn't do much for me on it's own. Time will tell...
