Maybe we need to develop a brand new term which encapsulates RUSH'S style yet works with all their albums.

How about RUSH?

I hate labels... they are often too limiting to describe what an artist does.

I like it. biggrin.gif You have Classic, Hard, Heavy, Metal, Heavy Metal, Progressive, Grunge, Disco, Pop, etc.......And then you have the genre of RUSH Rock.........It's the only term that really fits tight. This thread started out, ' RUSH- Classic Rock No Way. To be labeled Classic should be a complement. But to the artists themselves, to be 'labeled' at all is probably not that desirable.

Hate to break it to you, but Rush ARE classic rock.

Yep...I've always considered them CLASSIC ROCK.

That's because you were born in the 80s and by the time you were into Rush it was about 2000.

And I do find it peculiar that you defend a lame umbrella term like this, why are you bothering? You getting paid or something?

I never said I particularly loved the term, I'm just acknowledging that it exists, that it's prevalent, and that Rush is considered part of it.

The OP said:

I get angry when non-fans label Rush as classic rock, a genre that they don't play.

I was just pointing out that whether anyone likes it or not, Rush is widely considered to be a classic rock band. Present company excluded, of course. tongue.gif

Well I'd rather waste my time staring at the wallpaper than defend a term like classic rock, but hey whatever floats your boat...

trink38.gif

I'd rather waste my time staring at wallpaper than ATTACKING a term like classic rock. Your point is pretty hipocritical. Especially making several posts on it.

As others have said, I think it is an honor to be considered classic rock. Not a bad bunch to be associated with.

I am proud that Rush is classic rock. Kinda like classical music. Nobody thinks Motzart and Beethoven (sorry if I spelled the names wrong) suck. To me, it is a term of respect.

Hey you're crazy if you think I'm gonna pass up an easy opportunity to argue with rushgoober!

laugh.gif

btw you spelled hypocritical wrong too...

Thanks for the correction. I had a few glasses of wine but that's no excuse. I'm not the best speller but I should have got that right.

Rock on

Actually I was only messing, I'm not normally a member of the spelling police...

I don't even recognise this term classic rock, they are what they are...

Judas Priest for instance released their first album in 1974 in what some people probably think of as "the classic rock era" but Priest are still a heavy metal band and that's all. Same with Sabbath...

Classic rock does not exist!

1287.gif

Metal does!

1022.gif

Agreed...

I personally hate the term AOR ( ALBUM ORIENTED ROCK )

Can other types of rock bands release albums ?

People may want to shoot me for quoting Billy Joel a Rush forum but, as he once said, "Its still rock and roll to me."

Billy Joel was metal once too though.

Pretty much any band who had hit songs prior to 1985 will be labeled "classic rock". Get used to it.

What about Iron Maiden and Judas Priest?

And why 1985? What happened in 1985 did we reach the next star system an no one told me?

Iron Maiden has never had a hit song. Judas Priest is classic rock: Living After Midnight, You've Got Another Thing Coming.

Judas Priest are a metal band, always have been...

Iron Maiden never had a hit??

They've had tons of hits in europe and were number one in the UK in 1992...

This appears to be an american thing, forget about classic rock magazine, no one has ever described Judas Priest as anything other than heavy metal in europe and I highly doubt they use the term classic rock in Japan, south America or Australia...

By the way what has having a hit song got to do with anything anyway?

Course I don't pay attention to charts or mainstream radio even, haven't since the early 80s for the most part...

This whole classic rock thing appears to be an american mainstream radio creation which of course only impacts only up to 300 million people that live there and never touches the other 6.7 billion people on the planet...

Treeduck, were you personally wronged by the term "classic rock"? Is that why you have such a vendetta against it? Did it murder someone close to you? If so, get that sorry bastard.

I am the living embodiment of the term heavy metal!

QUOTE (Presto-digitation @ May 10 2010, 06:50 PM)
Iron Maiden had 4 TOP 10 singles in the UK...from 7th Son alone.

They've had hit singles right from their first album in 1980. and most of their albums have been top 10 albums.

I think it was 1990 when they had the number 1 hit, not 1992, as I said before.

7th Son rules. Phenomenal.

I listened to that tonight coincidentally...

Good album!

Rush is rock. Jesus.

70s Rush could be considered progressive rock. However, MP-present is purely rock. Not classical, not hard, not progressive, just ROCK.

Im pretty sure most people consider MP classic rock. You will never hear a single song off that album on anything other than classic rock stations.

I think we have a winner! You may have hit the nail on the head! It hadn't occurred to me that "classic" rock may be a purely american format invention.

Yes, of course, Priest are a metal band. But over here, some of their songs are staples of the classic rock format. Maiden, much as I love them, have received inconceivably little airtime in the U.S., and so aren't part of the format.
