CygnusX-1Bk2
I had the opportunity to work with an excellent producer and real nice guy Jack Douglas. He has worked with Aerosmith, Alice Cooper and John Lennon. In fact he is working on a posthumous Lennon album right now. Anyway, the opportunity presented itself and despite my seriously busy schedule I managed to make it. My friends play some light jazz-pop kind of stuff occasionally and so I was a little out of my norm, but still rose to the occasion. 3 songs with sticks and 3 on brushes. As soon as I get some sounds to share I will. Here Jack put a Royer 121 ribbon mic outside the bass drum for added "oomph" along with an AKG D112 inside the drum. http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs237.snc3/22452_1238917090657_1161155271_30638917_3768653_n.jpg We then created a bass trap using a standard packing blanket and a couple mic stands. http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs237.snc3/22452_1238917730673_1161155271_30638920_2091753_n.jpg I used my Paragon ride and 8" splash, K Hybrid crashes (19" and 17") and my trusty K-Z hats. http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs237.snc3/22452_1238918530693_1161155271_30638922_6865908_n.jpg Sennheiser 421s on the toms, Shure SM57 on the snare. Neumann KM-184 on the hat and AKG 414s for overheads. A nice sounding room doesn't hurt either. http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs237.snc3/22452_1238920890752_1161155271_30638943_160814_n.jpg http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs156.snc3/18374_1362732987594_1209683243_1113997_7538789_n.jpg Jack Douglas, David Collins (vocals), Robert Sundberg (bass), Me (looking very old), Alex Peters (Alto and soprano sax), Bob McBain (piano) I used a variety of snare drums too. The one pictured is the Gretsch maple snare that came with my kit, an 8 lugger. I also used another Gretsch maple with 10 lugs and a Ludwig Black Beauty that I have had for a few months. And there was no muffling required on any drum!

Cowtothesky
Very cool. I have seen that bass drum trick done before, but this guy obviously knows his way around a studio.

invisibleairwaves
Awesome! I'm going to school for audio engineering right now...my instructor showed us that bass drum trick (he used an RE-20 inside and (IIRC) a 421 in front). Sounded awesome. Can't wait to hear yours!
