THE NEW COMEDIES

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm a HUGE fan of some of "the new comedies" that have been coming out in the past few years.

I guess the new era started in the late 90's with movies like There's Something About Mary, American Pie, 10 Things I Hate About You, Election, the first two Austin Powers movies, etc.

I really enjoy a lot of the movies that some of the last generation of comic actors have been in; Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell, etc. Some movies like Zoolander, Wedding Crashers, Meet the Parents, Swingers, Blades of Glory, etc. are really great.

Now it seems there is a newer generation of comedies from Judd Apatow and directors of like mind that all seem to star people like Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Johan Hill, Michael Cera, Bill Hader, etc.

Movies like I Love You, Man, Knocked Up, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, etc. are some of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

Then there are other movies from the past several years like Little Miss Sunshine, Napoleon Dynamite, Juno, Dan in Real Life, Garden State, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, High Fiedlity, etc. that are also really high quality.

Maybe it's just me, but as far as I'm concerned this is a truly great era for comedies. yes.gif new_thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

Feel free to talk about any aspects of newer comedies. There's a whole lot of films I missed, some that I haven't seen like Pineapple Express, some of which I like but don't love as much as a lot of other people like Old School, but there's so much more to talk about. yes.gif Edited by rushgoober

I'd agree. But I do think we are dangerously close to Seth Rogen overkill. He has ANOTHER movie coming out, "Observe & Report" which I of course will be going to see laugh.gif The guy is hilarious.

Oh, and Goob, in your list of comedies you forgot one of my current faves: Pineapple Express.

Yes, you must. James Franco is outstanding as Seth Rogen's pot dealer! applaudit.gif

I love seeing the cast of Freaks & Geeks (a great show that never got the chance it deserved) doing well.

I am a huge fan of these movies as well.

Though I have to say I'm not too keen on Pineapple Express eh.gif Some good moments but overall didn't grab me like the others.

Last night I watched another flick that fits this group and thought it was hilarious! Sex Drive. Though it had all the usual cliches of these types of movies I was laughing big time. laugh.gif

Aw, Test, I laughed my butt off at that movie. laugh.gif

To each his own I guess. At the very least, its worth the buck to the redbox.

I plan on giving it another shot wink.gif Like I said there were some funny moments. Some movies you just know you dont mind watching again (like the others) and some after watching you just dont get that "I'd watch that again!"

Edited to ask Have you seen Sex Drive yet? I'd buy that one personally.

Sex Drive is f'n hilarious. A warning though: don't watch the unrated director's cut first. It's more of a joke itself where they left improvised bits and outtakes in the movie, and won't make much sense if you haven't seen the regular cut.

Another Seth Rogen flick which I think is great is Zack and Miri Makes A Porno.

I thought that was great too, and I'm not generally a Kevin Smith fan...

I loved those first few Kevin Smith movies, but was let down with the Clerks II one.. I havent seen this one yet but haven't heard any good or bad about it. Is it in the spirit of his first few movies?

Not at all, but that's a good thing to me.

And people mentioned Sex Drive earlier - I haven't even heard of that one. no.gif

Some of the funniest movies I have seen recently have been Seth Rogen or Steve Carrell films. 40 Year Old Virgin, Superbad (Im watching it again right now laugh.gif ) Knocked Up. Just all brilliant films! Great quotable lines! biggrin.gif

I'm watching "Knocked Up" as I type this, and it's not working for me. Blah.

I love some of these "dumb comedies," as I call them, especially:

Old School

Wedding Crashers

40-Year-Old Virgin

Superbad

I Love You, Man

I also love all the Kevin Smith movies except for "Jersey Girl," and also "Something About Mary." Toss in some of the earliest Adam Sandler flicks, too.

There's the "dumb comedies," which I like, and then there's the REALLY DUMB comedies... too stupid for me! Will Ferrel's latest track record has been very bad: the ice skating thing, the NASCAR thing - and I only liked moments of Anchorman. Dodge Ball was so-so, and Zoolander? No thanks! Ditto the original Kumar/White Castle film.

I thought Knocked Up was awesome..........so was Zak and Miri. Superbad was pretty funny too.

I thought ONE JOKE was funny the first time I saw it. Repeated viewings actually made it a little better... but not a lot.

Ironically, the only Kevin Smith movies I've really enjoyed were Jersey Girl and Zak and Miri, though Zak and Miri was by far better. There's Something About Mary I think is a classic, even though it can be a bit harsh in places.

Dodge Ball I thought was a disaster. Maybe a 2nd viewing would improve it as I didn't care much for Anchorman the first time and like it a lot more after seeing it again.

Zoolander and the first Harold & Kumar film I just love to death (haven't seen the 2nd). I know Zoolander is stupid, but it's such hilarious stupid to me - my wife doesn't like it half as much as I do.

It's funny how subjective it can be and how everyone differs, seemingly for no rhyme or reason. For example, you like The 40-Year Old Virgin, Superbad and I Love You, Man, but don't like Knocked Up, which to me would be a given you would love it if you loved those others.

At least there are a lot of movies we DO agree on, and even though they can be hit and miss for people, I still think that we've been witnessing some of the best comedies to come along in a very long time.

The rival news teams battling gladiator-style...

Jack Black punting a dog off a bridge...

Will Ferrell playing "Aqualung" on jazz flute...

"Pleasuretown"...

Steve Carell as a mentally retarded meteorologist...

I love that movie.
